Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Friday 9th April) - Could Sergio Aguero be on his way to Elland Road?

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Friday 9th April, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Could Sergio Aguero be on his way to Elland Road?

Silly season has started early this year with various media outlets are claiming Leeds want to bring Sergio Aguero across the Pennines to Elland Road. The Argentine International striker has spent the last 10 years at the Etihad Stadium, netting 181 times in only 272 appearances over the last decade. Not only is he City's all time record goal scorer but has ten major trophies to his name. He is three caps shy off 100 International appearances - scoring 41 times.

Aguero recently confirmed he would not be extending his stay with the Premier League champions elect, bringing an end to an illustrious ten-year spell with the club. Bielsa is a known fan of his compatriot and it's hoped that, despite Leeds being unable to offer Champions League football, the prospect of moving to a club where he wouldn't be required to relocate from his current home in the north west could prove an attractive option.

Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham are also tracking the Argentina international, who turns 33 this summer. Despite recent injury issues surely he has another couple of top flight seasons in him? With Aguero a free agent, transfer fee is not an issue, but the £240,000 a week wages would be a real issue for most clubs. Are the rumours realistic? If we did sign him, could he even displace Patrick Bamford from the side?

Cooper sings Struijk's praise

In a BBC Radio Leeds interview, Leeds Captain Liam Cooper has labelled Pascal Struijk as 'different class'. The emerging talent broke through, to become a first team regular after impressing Bielsa with his defensive displays this season. Leeds have had a torrid time with injuries, especially in defence. Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch have all been sidelined for considerably periods; leaving the Leeds gaffer with no alternative but to throw young Struijk in at the deep end!

I trained hard all week and I was available for selection, but with the team doing so well I’d never expect to walk straight back in the team. Pascal and Diego have been different class and all I could do was try and push them and work hard all week.

He’s played with Pascal as well. Pascal’s been unbelievable this season and now we’ve got four players going for the two positions. You know if you have a couple of bad games you’re out of the team and the next man’s waiting to take your spot. It’s only healthy and that’s the level we’ve got to get to.

Bielsa labels Forshaw a 'very important player'

During Marcelo Bielsa's press conference yesterday, the 65yo spared some encouraging words for forgotten man Adam Forshaw. He has been dogged by a recurring hip injury since September 2019 before eventually going under the surgeons knife just over a year ago. Bielsa maintains that the 29 year old is a “very important” player for the Whites and hope's he will return to action before the season ends.

The timings for Forshaw, even if he has been in a positive moment for 10 days, we have to measure it in months. He basically hasn’t played for two seasons. To be able to play 90 minutes at a high level of competition after being healthy, there’s still a while to go before you’re ready for that.

He’s healthy, and there’s two months left of the season so he can prove he’s finally over his issues. We all hope it will be like that. He’s a very important player and he has made a massive effort to overcome the situation he’s going through.

Good day EB et all

I'd love Aguero to join us as I think he'd love Bielsa ball and would score a bagful of goals but the wages wow far too rich for us and I'm sure I read somewhere he'd said he wouldn't play for another Prem team as he felt it was disloyal to Citeee

Struijk one day will be a top class CB and Bielsa is obviously very aware of that, however he doesn't want to burn the lad out and also wants to keep his feet on the ground plus Coops is the Captain so that should hold some status and get you back in the team

Forshaw I do remember someone that once played for us Leon you'll know who it was and did he play in the 60's
On a serious note I'm glad he's better now and starting to get back to fitness and I hope he does get a 10min run out in the Prem for us before he joins a Championship side for next season and I'll wish him all the luck in the world

I think we have rose tinted glasses on here if we think we are going to be getting Aguero- we need the money to pay his wages.. I think he will be going to Arsenal

Aguero - not a chance on those wages.

If he continues to develop like he has done this year, Struijk could be the best of both worlds i.e. a big, strong and imposing yet ball playing centre back.

I’ve said it before that I would be very surprised if Forshaw makes a serious contribution, if any contribution at all, to Leeds’ 1st team again.

Aguero would make no sense, and possibly ruin the dressing room spirit so carefully developed over the last 3 seasons, to bring in a sub for Bamford on 6 or 7 times his wages. It would be like taking a slice of the Ridsdale era insanity and plonking it into the middle of what Bielsa has built.

As for Forshaw, again I think keeping him and Berardi sends out all the right signals, this is not a manager or a club that dumps players lightly. If he's reached the end of a contract, that's one thing, but if not I wouldn't get rid of him without at least giving him some game time. We're still doing that thing where people wrote off a player as being Championship level, as people have done with Bamford, Ayling, Dallas, Roberts and Harrison.

A hugely talented footballer no doubt, but I doubt it'll happen. Not the type of striker that appeals to Bielsa and will cost a fortune.

However if it does come to be, I won't complain.

240k a week isn't ridiculous when considering we wouldn't pay a transfer fee. On a 1 or 2 year deal with a relegation release clause it wouldn't be that expensive. We paid almost 30 mill transfer fee for Rodrigo plus about 5 or 6 mill a year in wages

I disagree.

I think it would be ridiculous and would see us just become part of the insanity of the PL where some players make a million every month for sitting on the subs bench. That's fine at Man City where the owners can just wage war on another country to get the funds. But at well run clubs like Liverpool and Leicester, they don't usually sign subs on a quarter million a week.

At 33, there's no way anyone is going to pay Aguero 240k a week no matter good he is (or was to be honest).
He's made the decision to leave Man City because he's no longer guaranteed a starting place so while he probably still has a couple of years of top flight football left in him it won't be with us.

I'd play Struijk rather than Cooper all day long but if they all stay fit it looks like Pascal will have to be content with a place on the bench for the rest of the season.

No I agree 240k a week is ridiculous, but when factored into the fact that there is a zero transfer fee for a player probably worth at least 15 million, then to the club it becomes a more financially sensible option. You have to factor in the transfer fee into the overall price and aguero overall would cost us about the same as Rodrigo over 2 years

That we are a sentimental charity?

Offering Berardi that contract to stay was the right thing to do last season.

This season is time to say goodbye and rightly so.

Forshaw has been injured for 2 years, the chances of him ever recapturing the form he had before he was injured is incredibly slim (and lets be honest, he was a tidy but unspectacular midfielder with no end product).

That was in the Championship.

We are a league higher now so not only will he need to come back after 2 years but he will have to raise his game, that almost never happens after that long out.

He will be on a decent wage, the right thing to do is to try and move him on.

That is what football clubs do, a cutthroat business and we should be no different.

A 10 minute cameo to say cheerio but any thing more is daft.

We arent signing Aguero.

His body is finished, look at his injuries.

A top top class player when fit, probably still is, but not appening.

I think the person best placed to judge whether Forshaw has a role is Bielsa.

I know time and again Leeds players have been written off by fans, League One Liam, Bamford can't score in the Championship, Bamford won't score in the Premier league, Roberts is "not a Premier League player", Harrison is "not a Premier league player", Llorente is a dud etc.

If Bielsa thinks Forshaw has a part to play, then I really don't know or understand why fans would want him out.

Adam Forshaw isn’t the footballing equivalent of Sugar Ray Leonard.

He was an adequate 2nd tier midfielder, he isn’t going to make a serious contribution to a side looking to remain in the top half, after two years off.

The club are apparently looking for cover for KP and an 8/10 that we have needed for years so that suggests Forshaw isnt needed surely?

Of course Bielsa is the right person to judge but the club need to take heed of whats gone before it.

The absolute worst thing any club can do in its 2nd season is stand still. Think "yep we stayed up lets keep basically the same squad and go again".

Teams who do that tend to go down.

Radz talked about shedding our Championship skin, that is exactly whats needed.

Wolves are the most successful recent newly promoted side and if we look at them by the 2nd season 7 of the 11 most used players were signed after promotion.

In those first 2 seasons they let Ivan Cavaleiro leave, Helder Costa, Barry Douglas, Ryan Bennett, Leo Bonatini.

John Ruddy was relegated to backup.

All of those players were regulars, not even just squad players like Roberts, Berardi and Forshaw for us.

Squad players like Alfred N'Diaye, Danny Batth, Roderick Miranda, Benik Afobe all gone to by the 2nd season.

Imo that is something some of our fans struggle to accept (not having a go at you personally). But you see it all over forums, oh we must keep this player we must keep that player, he may come good etc etc.

Thats not how you progress, you progress by being ruthless. If you have any doubts about a player and you can improve him then you do. Thats what we must do imo and it starts with players like Berardi, Forshaw, Roberts etc.

I would agree with Mountain and leave the decisions to Bielsa. A tidy but unspectacular player could easily have been the label to describe Dallas and whilst I very much doubt Forshaw has a part to play in the Leeds future if Bielsa thinks he can then he is a far better judge. Forshaw can be the cover for KP and also play in other midfield roles so similar to Berardi who offers us the ability to cover left back, right back and centre back. If Bielsa wants squadplayers that can drop into a variety of positions and won't kick up a fuss if on the bench then Berardi & Forshaw could be good options. That really is the key with Bielsa's small squads, you need the versatility of the 'back-up' players so that they know they will get minutes here and there and the occasional start rather than them just sitting on the bench as a back-up to just one position and waiting for that 1 player to get injured or suspended.
