No we weren't ready for it Eire, we rolled over & allowed them to totally dominate & outclass us.

We rarely win a game without Kalvin and last season our defence was useless without Llorente. When I saw both were missing Saturday, I couldn't see anything other than a drubbing. The important thing will be how we react. Have to get a win asap to get momentum going. Were all too well aware what effect two or three straight defeats would have on morale and some of the less patient sections of our fanbase
Spot on Eire, just how I felt too.

I reluctantly predicted us to win, won't happen again when we are without KP & Diego especially v the big teams.

At one stage, can't remember who it was, but it was a five yard pass to the left back and went about a metre to the side of him and out of play!
Our passing was woeful Dan.

Another facet of our game we heavily work on in training.

This is sadly the case Byebye :( hopefully we'll manage v the teams outside the top eight.

Still smarting from that...

The optimistic side of me says that we've gotten the worst result of the season out of the way early doors and there's nowhere to go but up now.

The other part of me will be worried until we get our first 3 points on the board.

We'll see how the next few games go but seriously, hard to be positive right now...

Byebyegeegee wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 9:14 am One game hopefully will not set the pattern for the season but it is now very important that we bounce back and put up a decent showing in the next match.

We can’t really afford another bad defeat or the optimism built up over last season will quickly ebb away, this along with a lot of fans’ disappointment at what is perceived to have been a poor transfer window, may combine to bring an air of pessimism around the club, a downturn in momentum and before you know it you’re in a gruelling fight against relegation.

Perhaps a little OTT considering it is only the 1st game of the season but they really did make us look like a Championship (or lower) team.

Like many other fans I believe Phillips and Llorente would have made a difference but it is also slightly concerning that the whole squad might be so reliant on just 2 players.

Ah well a decent win against Everton and we will be back on track, onwards and upwards!
Most teams are reliant on 2/3 players, take Root out of the England cricket team, take any QB out of a top football team. It's not just you lose important players it's also you wreck the balance. The natural right footed CB moves to DMF pushing a left footed CB to the wrong side. That creates a new partnership at RB/CB and also a new CB pairing. We went back to a fill in LB as well. Did all that game 1 away to atop football team.

We were a pace off because of uncertainty not fitness. Bielsa's system relies on well drilled footballers who use repetion to understand where they moving to and who's gonna be where... We never do well in games where the back 5 has been rearranged...

Bloody hell.

Before ManU he was the greatest manager, universally admired for refusing to compromise, we loved how even as the clock wound down at Man City 10 man Leeds were still attacking etc.

90 minutes into the next season and people are saying he has to change his style, this was always going to happen etc. etc.

Noticed it all the game, also Messilier distribution is shocking, that team on saturday should have had a colourblind test, how many passes went to a red shirt instead of a white one !!
Apoor, poor performance all round, if youre going to get walloped, dont do it against your most bitter and hated rivals, and certainly not twice in a row, argies know nothing about our English rivalry and it showed he didnt care.

I think we have hit a new, and possibly record low, in the Bielsa bashing.

A poster saying Bielsa doesn't care. It's...jaw dropping.

they were a class above us, there are no excuses even with llorente and kp in the team they would have still been a class above us.

Hang on a minute Mountain

Our approach at the Etihad was totally different. No gun-ho tactics there, we were disciplined, defended stoutly not giving their stars any space whatsoever catching them out twice on the break, had we adopted the same mentality on Saturday we may have just got a result at OT.

But we played two different types of tactics at the Etihad & OT.

Maybe but at 1-1 they wouldn’t have run riot like they did. A 2-1 or 3-1 defeat wouldn’t have produced the same kind of negativity that the result did

Fact check:

Our passing rate was 78% and the oppositions was 79%

If I'm honest, it was the way we played that scared me more than the result.

We could string passes together and the players weren't getting into position that they wanted the ball.
Totally agree, and you can add to that, Players not tracking runners and we looked scared to put a foot in- the amount of 50/50 we didn't win or simply backed out of beggared belief.
It was clear after 20 mins that Pogba was running the show along with to a lesser extent Mctominay and we should have changed tactics to close them down rather than the gung ho style that cost us a result. It amazes me how we are the only team that makes Mctominay look world class!
We are a decent side on the break- we should use that to our advantage a lot more than we do.

The ultimate truth, when it comes down to it.

Going to have to either stomach results like this and build slowly, or buy quality fast but take serious financial risks doing so. Trouble is, build too slowly in the Prem and it's easy to get overtaken by the rest.
