It isn't like the team has been awful all season and suddenly that was a performance that blew us all away (not like as an example Bielsa's first match in charge blew us all away as it was the same group of players that had been abysmal for at least half a season previously).

Yes we looked tighter defensively than in some matches, but we need to see how that continues. We have seen that some of the teams that have carved us open, Man City, Liverpool, Man U, Tottenham and Arsenal can do that to any team when they are playing well. Not seen enough of Leicester to know whether they are as capable of ripping teams open as those teams so at this point it is probably correct to say we looked better defensively but were also playing against a team not as good as some we have played recently. I have mentioned previously how Warnock came in and we looked better defensively in the first couple of games and then conceded 7 in a match so no point getting carried away after 1 match - not being negative as I thought we played well and looked to have a decent shape about us but also far too early to say everything is rosy.

Will be interesting to see what we do with Coutinho on Thursday as he was the key for them against us and played well at the weekend too.
If I recall it was all Tom Lees fault according to Warnock

Jesse Marsch post Villa

Post by Cjay »

March's here - how did it go so wrong?

I underestimated the stress of the moment from the players' perspective. Had a very good week, 10 days together, Tried to create clarity for the group in how we play and the behaviours we want. Clear from the start we lacked confidence and aggression in the match. Heard a lot about the crowd and I thought it was fantastic from the beginning, but I could see the players want to do so well so badly for the fans, it brings more pressure and stress.

We have to stay calm and be clear. Can see here we have to stay strong with that message. We have to know the fear will ensure failure, not protect us from failure. Have to attack and go after opponents. Biggest lesson from tonight.

Opposition space

We spoke about cut-back crosses and we did not address it. Unlucky to deflect off Pascal. A lot of elements we had spoken about handling set-pieces. With and against the ball.

At HT I addressed the tactics, the fear and then we had a good phase at the start of the second half. PLayed how we want to play, brought the crowd in. Not sharp enough or good enough to find the equaliser. Invited too many counters and gave up the second goal. Bunch of individuals after the second goal.

Nerves?

Being clear with the roles on the pitch and executing them confidently. Stress is a factor in that. Clouds judgement in that. Some ways, accept it is normal, but in other way takes away the lesson is fear is going to block us from achieving our goals. Discipline to do what we say and understand what we saw will create confidence.

This is what we need. A big match on Sunday to regroup and make sure we are ready to fight.

Firpo

Would guess it keeps him out for a while, perhaps an MCL strain.

Bamford optimism

Some dangerous moments. Confident guy. Does not suffer from fear. Going to need him and his quality within the team. Gives me optimism.

Change in three days?

I am not afraid of the moment and the situation. In some ways I like having my back against the wall. We have a situation that is really tough, Not going to sleep a lot to night, but will think carefully and hope I regroup. Better on Sunday. This is what I am here to do. Help the players understand what we need to do to thrive in this situation

No finisher there - Bamford will help?

Definitely helo in the attacking third. Physical quality to help us. Needs to be cohesive and understand the roles. Looked like individual efforts in the final third

Concern seeing the crowd?

My first impression. Obvious uneasiness with the situation which is normal. My job is to provide confidence. Big job. Knew that when I came here. Not surprised with the situation. My job is to stay strong. Help the players to understand their roles and execute clearly.

We'll keep pushing.

Stress only getting worse?

Stand tall. Talked about this fear factor and the one thing I know is there is no lack of desire or work ethic, but because those things are so high it almost adds to the stress. Feel the pressure more because they want it so badly.

Six-pointer add to the stress?

Someone said it's like a final, but no. I understand the vernacular. Every point is valuable. Every moment on the pitch is incredibly valuable. Every point massive. Focusing on those things will only disrupt our ability to achieve those things

Robin Koch in DM?

He's more of a centre-back by trade but I think tactically he's very aware and I think his understanding of what that role is I thought he executed really well against Leicester. In general I thought Robin could've been more aggressive in certain moments to try and pressure the opponent. I thought he was one of the better players on the day. We'll have to evaluate what we do on Sunday, to see who physically will be able to perform

Gesticulating a lot on touchline, were you happy with the press?

No, I was not. We lacked aggression in our duels. The way I want us to press is the group attacking the ball and opponent together. Too many times the guys two yards from the ball was allowing the player closest to the ball [to press alone]. This is a product of playing man-v-man against the ball for four years. I have a different tactical style and I'm trying to get the simple things right to help them be successful together, without changing everything. It's a lot, we had a big first step against Leicester even though we didn't get the result and today was not a good step forward It wasn't all perfect before, it isn't all terrible now. Staying calm and steady will be paramount now.

Seems to be criticising the players for not doing the tactics correctly

Also its very worrying he is mentioning stress and pressure.

This squad has shown in the past they really struggle under pressure.

The fact he is highlighting this is deeply worrying

The main concern for me is that this team has always been far better because of Bielsa's sytem. The machine that Bielsa created to make the most of every player's ability and the team being far better than the collection of individuals (as a contrast to Man U who are a collection of excellent individuals rather than an excellent team). Take that away and will we be a lot weaker, especially to do so during the season?

I think Bielsa knew that by tinkiering too much, formation, tactics or even just putting new players in that the machine could go from not running smoothly to breaking down. Change too much and we might becoem slightly better in some areas but vastly weaker in others.

I think Marsch may be a good coach but he hasn't been in this sort of situation before - probably why teams go for Hodgson, Allardyce etc because they seem to know how to deal with the pressure and how to get the initial lift. Hopefully we can still stay up and Marsch can then fully implement the changes he wants to make and bring new players in too. Worst case scenario and we go down then hopefully we can still be strong and can be the big fish in the small pond that Marsch is used to managing and he can get us playing the way we want and we can bounce back stronger.

The proof’s in the pudding - I hope he can get the squad fired up and we scrape through for this year, one step at a time - but all the rhetoric means sod all if he can’t get the players to produce on the pitch.

They have it in them, see end of last year - but they look like they don’t want to fight to stay up on tonight’s showing.

No new manager bounce, so Jesse needs to earn his corn. In the words of Alice Cooper, “No more Mr Nice Guy”. Has he got it in him?

getting a new manager in and hitting off straight away was always going to be hard, the board never took this into consideration.

the summer was the right time to replace Marcelo.

in my opinion he didn't need replaced at all .

was he properly backed i seriously have my doubts.

were firpo , Rodrigo ever truly his signings .

seems to me some have far more power at club than they should.

you only have to look at arrogance by owner when fans were suggesting new midfielder before January window opened.

it was a smart arse reply of don't worry we have Forshaw.

scary to think i have more in common with you guys.

than those fraudulent owners.

Marsch has a hint of the Paul Heckingbottom.

Succeeded at a club already doing well, for Barnsley see RB Salzburg.

Despite his apparent success at this club the reviews were mixed at best, Lee Johnson was the reason Barnsley succeeded not Hecky. RB Salzburg fans gave most of the credit to the recruitment team and players.

Tactically both had serious question marks, both had one way of playing and no capacity for adaption.

And both had a hint of the yes man about them, grateful to be here. Wont rock the boat when Orta wants to pretend he is Ralf Rangnick and has the might of the Red Bull team behind him and signs 3 random u23s from Israel and flogs Raph and KP.
Cheap, Hecky wasnt the best candidate, he was just cheap, Marsch seems similar.

What is more worrying about Marsch is Heckingbottom at first had a misguided arrogance about him. Marsch though is on record for saying he voiced doubts to the Leipzig board about whether he could do the job.

He didn't believe in himself.

That may be the most worrying bit ive read about Marsch.

Then you look at his comments today, the players not doing his tactics right, well if he doesn't have faith in himself then the players will see it a mile off.

Bielsa had faith to the point of infuriating stubbornness at times.

Marsch seems very unsure.

You dont appoint a manager who doesn't believe in himself., if you do it is the mother of all gambles.

Worrying times.

And as further evidence the first thing Hecky did when things didn't go well was blame the players and talk about how it hadnt been great before recently. . . . Exactly what Marsch did today.

We haven't signed a midfielder for years.

Our 2 most creative central players since Bielsa arrived were allowed to leave and not replaced.

Our creativity comes from wide areas, definitely not central.

So why have we appointed a manager who plays 4-2-2-2 ? A notoriously narrow formation.

Anyone who looked into Marsch or even Rangnick could tell you that so how was he tactically the best fit?

Aside from having the players run a lot they share very few similarities him and Bielsa.

A club overloaded with wingers but lacking central midfielders appointed a manager who plays a system that doesnt require wingers :duno:

No you don't.

For starters, you equivocate about genocidal owners, a few wins by people who carpet bomb kids and dismember journalists and you criticise our owners? Radz could take us down 4 Divisions and sack Jesus Christ himself and it still would be insignificant compared to what you tolerate, accept and excuse.

And since you know so much about Newcastle? can you tell me who actually owns the club?

A lot of the immediate pressure on the new manager was brought on by himself.

Ayling at CB and James up front hasn’t worked over a number of games so why persist with it?

If it doesn’t work try something different, something that was levelled at MB.

Throwing on Joffy almost piecemeal is not the answer either. We need a number 9 to start the game, not just a panic move once we are behind.

The utter drivel that Newcastle fans are reduced to.

You may have no difficulty carpet bombing civilians and starving kids. And you can continue to dance a jig on their graves because it means you can buy Chris Woods. But don't pretend to not know who owns Newcastle, or pretend that other owners are the same.

All of your posts amount to one thing, evidence of how sportswashing works. The more you post excusing them and their actions, the more obvious it becomes...

No offence but seeing you are at it..

Can you?

I see a couple of stooges loaned money they cant repay to front it up.
Marsch OUT

Football has undergone a process of bielsification; pressing and possessing, passing rather than dribbling, intercepting high up the field rather than making last-ditch tackles, are in vogue.

Why is James CF, why are Harrison and Rodrigo starting ??
James LW, JG upfront, when PB is back, JG No 10 role, get JH & RM on t' bench behind Sommerville.

We've been getting the Koch/Struijk thing wrong for a while, even Marcelo. Struijk is the better DMF, Koch the better CB. Maybe an issue again with right/left in which case start Cresswell as the left footed CB

It's usually a truism that experience is best when fighting relegation and that maybe why CC doesn't get game time but things are getting desperate now

Can't blame Marsch who could turn out to be a very good manager in 3/4 years time. He has no Premier experience (the only league in the world where every team can beat you on their day) I'm not sure how much time he's spent fighting a tough relegation battle..

There are very few managers who could come in, change a system in days and win in a relegation battle, if any. An inexperienced out of towner has very little chance. It'll take time and we don't have it.

The solution would have been to let MB see out the season and go from there, our odds of staying up were still higher with MB than any incoming manager. Best hope now teams around us continue to lose and we're in with a shot with 3/4 games to go.
