We've lost two, and just scraped a win versus the worst side in the league!

Credit where credit's due. We're not a better side than we were 2 months ago.

Jesse Marsch post Norwich

Post by Cjay »

Marsch's here - how do you feel?

Feel like I played 96 minutes. A lot of emotion in the late stages. Heard a lot about the magic of ER. INcredible experience. Family here. For me, for them, everyone moving forward to understand what this is. Learn about everything in this city, the club and then how to help it.

Three points valuable. Performance was strong. Idea of how to play the game, how we want to play together was much, much better than Villa and Leicester.

Difficulty of Bamford and Rodrigo off?

Very happy with Patrick. Satisfied that's all we needed from him. Clear at half-time that was enough. Rodrigo and I have gotten to know each other really well in the last few days. How he can help, conversations. Good young man, Quality player. Not just the goal, but also how he played. We need this moment, momentum, to instil belief in the transformation. So much work to do. Little things to improve on.

Okay for Friday?

Bamford more likely, Rodrigo had some tightness in his quad.

Atmosphere?

Remember it on my deathbed. Last moments you feel the energy. Throughout the difference between Villa and this was we performed with confidence and with aggression and quality. REally brought the crowd into the game, gave them something to root for and attach to. Jacko talked about mental things before the game, and he said when people come to ER, they know they will see a fight. See a team that pours their heart into the match.

Fear and stress dissipated?

Certanly momentum, positive, big points. Clarity for the football we wanted to play. So much we wanted to do. Ideas and connections that can better and need to be better. Step in the right direction.

Bravery in this team?

Quality of men in the club. So much hope for the potential of what this can be. WE displayed that in a tough moment, not giving up. Raphinha makes a big play. Didn't see a look that was catastrophic and the game was done. I saw them look like they would keep fighting.

Don't like to five at the back, but as soon as we gave up the goal we needed Joffy. Made a big play. Quality of people here as big as I've ever seen.

Moment for a teenager like that

I don't think Joffy will ever forget that either. Got quality.

Crowd help your tempo?

Big difference to Thursday was our ability to bring the crowd in more. I learned on Thursday how important it was to have positive moments in the match to bring the crowd into the game and not be too passive. I have to learn and adapt. I can tell how intelligent the fans are from how and when they cheer. Right kind of cheering.

Start quickly?

For sure. In every one of the last seven games we have gone down first. Games are very difficult almost impossible when playing from behind. Having fast start and pushing the game from the beginning will help us get results.

Why keep Rodrigo?

Good conversation with the whole group and leadership council, Rodrigo in that. Separate chat with Rodrigo too. Incredible young man. Honest man. Willing to have open conversations. Instil belief and an idea of how he fits in. Massive presence on and off the field. Took our conversation really well. Applied himself really, really well. Another day he helps us find the second goal.

Importance of win?

Points are big. Needed a reward to continue to instl belief in the transition we are making and in the process. PErformance warranted a positive feeling, even if it didn't end up in three points. Bigger because get the three. Focus on how strong the connection was throughout the whole team. Our identity has been created here for decades and we have to take my idea for football and instil that mentality of what Leeds is. So much more work to do. Not ever getting ahead of myself until June, when I can take a breath. Enjoyed the last two weeks, not always been easy and a lot to do.

Smith

Apologised. In Germany, don't always shake hands with the opponent, so I ran off, but came back and apologised for running off. Tough one for him and his club. Should be proud of their performance.

Euphoria rank?

I don't know, it was nice. As a player and as a coach I have been in a lot of champs and they stick with you. That was special, will remember it for a long time. Bigger things in life than football like your family and children being born.

Gelhardt instructions?

Asked him to play as a 10 and pick up second balls. Don't worry about set-pieces, just get in the game. Not the time for every detail but a big moment for all of us.

Bringing calm?

I could see there was a desire to attack and go forward and be aggressive and that's good but we have to also understand what the game is giving us and understand what the opponent is giving us to know how to control the match. Maybe we can make a quality action in the last third but when we don't it leads to an open field and a transition in the other way and we want to prevent that. We want more control of the match. We're still developing that and we'll still be working on it tactically.

Harrison?

I thought he was fantastic, I knew he was disappointed not to be in the first XI. I told him he was likely in almost every scenario to be the first sub to come on the pitch and give us what we needed.

We looked impressive first half playing the Bert way, to be expected i know.

Who do we think gave the better half time team talk, Big Jesse or Dean Smith?

Totally out thought second half, still v worrying.

Joffy saved your ass Jesse because it was grass after those awful subs.

That said it was an incredible experience to be there today.
Fans were the best in a long long time and Joffy proved again he is one of us.
Marsch OUT

Football has undergone a process of bielsification; pressing and possessing, passing rather than dribbling, intercepting high up the field rather than making last-ditch tackles, are in vogue.

Marcelo Bielsa. The light that will never go out.

SG90 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 13, 2022 5:22 pm True, and it's hard to judge against a poor Norwich side, but regardless of who was in charge tbh, it felt that equaliser was coming as we wasted so many chances and it's been the story of our season. I just think Marsch deserves his day in the sun! Hopefully that goal will change the atmosphere in the dressing room. Newcastle were hopeless under Howe, then got a lucky win against us, and they've charged up the table as a result.
The win should hopefully ease a bit of pressure from the players and manager and hopefully give everyone a shot of confidence. We are overdue giving someone a spanking, and I'm not talking about Kenny here!!!!

Despite my reservations about Marsch, I’m going to give him some credit for the decision to put Raphinha up against Aarons.
He occupied him and stopped him overlapping which is one of Norwich’s strengths down the right.
Then switching it with Harrison to get in Aarons’ face and be (to use a sick inducing term) the “bitch on the pitch” was also a good move.
Harrison really pissed him off with some choice challenges to frustrate him.
It also gave Dallas some support against their sub and best player Rowe, who caused us grief in the second half.

I think Marsch deserves credit for the first half.

The set up was very good, width in attack but narrow and solid defensively.

The lovely Slick passing moves and not to much long ball stuff (which we did play under Bielsa tbf, we weren't afraid if a targeted pass long into space on occasion).

He got it wrong 2nd half and we did end up resorting to a more direct and less organised approach.

His subs were poor and poorly timed (although both were fitness related tbf).

He needs to manage games better but the first half was good.

He needs to fix his subs as well, a worrying pecking order still exists.

When we get it right we are a much more organised unit under Marsch.

The level of play we demonstrated today has me very encouraged. I won't stop being worried until we're well clear of the bottom three, but we're a better side now than we were a month ago. Part of that has to be attributed to improving health, but part of that credit needs to go to the manager.

The first half improvement on recent performances was down to few changes. One enforced- Dallas for Firpo. It made a huge difference at the back and going forwards. The other was Bamford. His clever running occupies defenders and creates space for others. It is why MB always played him and a part of his game that Joffy needs to improve. He tends to be drawn to the ball rather than knowing when to move the defenders away.
Is Marsch an improvement. Well he has improved our organisation when defending the set piece. Other than that there isn’t too much. The transition from defence to attack has the Bielsa stamp all over it. We are obviously better set up on occasion without the M2M system when we lose the ball.
The Bamford sub may have been precautionary to ease him in slowly, but the Rodrigo for Koch changed the impetus and nearly cost us. But a win is a win and that is what matters.

Can’t find it on here or from listening to post match interview but was the Rodrigo sub for injury?

Marsch said Bamford was knackered at ht in his interview. The inference was no argument from the player at all.
