Marsch the making of Rodders?
I like Rodrigo, I really do. He seems like a nice bloke and there is undoubtedly talent there. But I always questioned why we signed him, where he fit in. Rodrigo didn’t seem to suit Bielsa’s system of playing one up top. The requirements of the front man to press and hold the ball up were far more suited to Bamford that Rodrigo. Likewise the No.10 role didn’t seem to fit Rodrigo either, it always felt like he was playing too far back to make a real impact.
But with the arrival of Jesse Marsch we have seen a formation change. Two up front with Rodrigo either playing the focal role or playing off the main striker which seems to suit him the best. We’ve seen two key goals which have led to two important victories.
Marsch has also brought Rodrigo into the leadership group and we have seen him take more responsibility on and off the pitch. Taking everyone out to the Flying Pizza for this birthday last week will have been great for moral in this key time and he is leading on the pitch too. With Cooper, Bamford and Phillips out of large parts of this season having more leaders is vital.
His celebrations with the crowd prove how much he cares and he will be a vital player for us for the remainder of the season. Could Jesse Marsch’s arrival be the making of Rodrigo?

I have been very down on Rod because he's been shocking at times however I do like him as a player and person and his last few performances have been great.
Agree about formations not suiting etc but also wonder if covid really knocked him for 6 and maybe the gruelling training didn't suit either. In this regard Klitch looks reborn too.

Re: Marsch the making of Rodders?
Berts end goal was probably to get us playing 4-3-3 or such ala Citeh and Cess ...So Cess have ...Mane..Firmino..Salah
Rodrigos best would've come in a Raph..Bamford..Rodrigo as he loves cutting in from the right.
But apart from KP we didn't yet have the engine room Bert wanted and needed, when Cess have a plethora around Henderson to choose from.
Then all the work starts from a skillful back 4, tha knows like a ...Arnold...Matic..Van Dick..Robertson, but we.........oh i can't be fcking arsed, i'm goin for a pint.
Enjoy tha weekend chaps and chapettes, we'll be reet for staying up, but Lord help us in getting anywhere near the top 6 now Bert's gone, it's gonna be a v v v v very long haul, with many a crash along the way.
looking forward to a crackin game of Rugger toneet, get them fcking frogs legs broke, massive test for Eddies new outfit, i think they'll come through it and have my betting slip at the ready.
Must dash.

Two consecutive good games, coincidence? Another game in the same mold and I think you can say Marsch is definitely having a positive effect on him.
A few short games ago a lot were calling for him to be dropped, me included. Who’d have thought he would be the one to propel us to possible safety?

Re: Marsch the making of Rodders?
Don't think so, Bielsa was getting MOTM performances out of him but Covid and injury were always an issue. Our best player on the pitch v Newcastle/Villa and Everton where he was so close to two wonder strikes... So it's not the first time he's put in consecutive good performances. I have 6 MOTM's for him this season, 4 under Bielsa

been poor since he joined but a handful of decent games won't cut it, needs to find consistency and do it week in week out
hopefully he can keep this up and become a key member of the starting eleven every week

Re: Marsch the making of Rodders?
Improved in the last few games but should be playing like that anyway.
It’s possible that with Klich and Forshaw as midfield pivots, Rodrigo doesn’t have to cover as much ground as previously. As we play in zones rather than man marking, his “area” might be half the size as previously so he’s impacting the game more.
Also, it’s the World Cup later this year and he wants to impress

Re: Marsch the making of Rodders?
Bielsa used him poorly during his tenure including the daft man mane king system which drawers him too deep. He’s a centre forward ffs. Marsch seems to have given him the freedom to roam which is why his performances have improved. He’s always had the ability since day one but wasn’t being used effectively. Similar to Klich again we have seen a massive improvement with him. Bielsa worked wonders for 3 years but he was starting to show his problems and stubbornness this season. If the change had have been made in January maybe we might not be looking over our shoulders.

Agreed, 'one swallow' and all of that. I am pleased for him and he generally seems happier on the pitch. As you alluded to, he just needs be more consistent.

Re: Marsch the making of Rodders?
I definitely think the system change has suited him, being able to play that false 9 and play to his strengths. Of course, two swallows don't make a summer, but he's always had that something about him, and as Faaip says, he came close to scoring two amazing strikes against Everton. I hope he becomes more consistent and the recent goals should do his confidence the world of good.

Indeed SG
This is what happens when players are played in their correct positions.
You only have to look at Ayling, he literally took the Wolves game by the scruff of the neck playing at RB, we wouldn't have got that attacking energy from him as a CB.

LA was wasted at CB, hopefully JM realises this and sticks to keeping him, and others in their natural positions.
Rodrigo is now showing his value and worth, I said months ago the dressing room was lost, the players looked out of sinc, whatever has gone on, before or since MB went, things have now changed, everyone seems to be in it together, right to the end of every game, its great to see that again, and long may it continue.

Re: Marsch the making of Rodders?
The strange thing is we could be virtually safe within the next 2 games. Beating saints & Watford would put us almost out of sight assuming Liverpool beat Watford next time out. That must be our aim because the following 4 games are all defeats imo and that would be a crushing mental blow , let's hope it doesn't come down to the last 2 games.

That would make it 4 out of 4, looking at the past it would seem impossible, but newcastle put a good run together so why not us ?BGwhite wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 1:54 pm The strange thing is we could be virtually safe within the next 2 games. Also, it really is achieveable, only wish we could keep a bloody clean sheet to boot.

There's never been any need to play Ayling at CB. We have more than enough of them . Cresswell should be in there first choice plus one or 2 from the others depending on the system. We have some great kids at the club and hopefully JM recognises this.mentalcase wrote: LA was wasted at CB, hopefully JM realises this and sticks to keeping him, and others in their natural positions.

I think it's more than possible now. The moral & confidence will be up now, Southampton are not in form and Watford are crap at home.mentalcase wrote: That would make it 4 out of 4, looking at the past it would seem impossible, but newcastle put a good run together so why not us ?

We do have a realistic chance of getting out of this fight in two games BG. Our tails are up, the pressure is lifting from the team, Philips and Raphinha should be back, as well as most of those injured at Wolves, and Southampton are on a dire run lately. This game could be the decider for us. We simply have to beat Watford whatever happens V Southampton, and they are poor - even more so at home.BGwhite wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 1:54 pm The strange thing is we could be virtually safe within the next 2 games. We could then relax for the tough run that follows - sounds too easy an option for Leeds United, but we live in hope

Agree again here BG. It looks so ridiculous not to have been using Cresswell all along. His blocks, heading and even his booking were all qualityBGwhite wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 1:59 pm There's never been any need to play Ayling at CB. We have more than enough of them . There are points to be had v the Saints, Watford, Brighton & Brentford, 4 points would probably be enough, weBoo Radley wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 2:14 pm We do have a realistic chance of getting out of this fight in two games BG. should be expecting at least 8 points from those four games.
