There are plenty of us.
Marsch OUT

Football has undergone a process of bielsification; pressing and possessing, passing rather than dribbling, intercepting high up the field rather than making last-ditch tackles, are in vogue.

Jesse Marsch Post Southampton

Post by Cjay »

Marsch's here - see it?

Intensive game with a lot of second balls and we should have won. Intensive match. Knew it would be tight. Solutions to get forward in transition moments. Southampton get in your half they throw balls into the box. JWP has incredible service and you're feeling pressure. Stood up to those moments well. Foul leads to JWP's FK is like getting a penalty for them.

Step forward?

Yes. Clarity of tactics. Balanced in the match. Did not give much away. Still just trying to turn advantages into real chances and chances into goals. This style we will always create chances, but if we could slow ourselves down and find a way to make the last pass. Crisper and cleaner would mean more goals.

Improvements?

We have tried to organise ourselves in all phases of the game to defend better including set-pieces. The lads are intelligent. Less shouting in this match because they were more in control of every situation.

Sub problem?

Mix up with the staff. Luke had a problem, but Liam was feeling heavy and we wanted to get him out of the game to put Pascal at CB. He came in and Stuart went to RB.

Gelhardt to start?

One of the reasons Joffy did not start was he tested positive during the week. False positive. Missed a day and a half. Haven't got the rhythm going in training which meant he has been more of a reserve role. Dangerous at times. Have to consider expanding his role more and more. 23s on Monday and gets more minutes.

Biggest improvement?

Best counter-pressing game by far. Good in pressing moments. Build-up phases found solutions. Understand what we want rotations to look like.

Cooper over Struijk big call?

Pascal was positive in the break and coming back he picked up a small hamstring issue. Did not train fully for two weeks and Cooper had. He was strong and clear. Relatively easy decision to make in the circumstances. Concerned about Coops for the 90. Good he was able to play a full match. Point is important. Two big players back and closer to full fitness is massive for us. Need those guys. Big presence. Big step forwards.

How to control frantic style?

100 to 70. Means in some moments we want them to slow down, not always physically. but in their heads. Poise to have the next play. Fans here don't want to see that. They want 100 to 150. Illan catches the ball and the fans want him to play immediately. Flow of the game is like. What the tempo changes can look like. Every time you lose the ball Southampton play vertical and long. Any time you don't have that rhythm you're running backwards.

Rodrigo

Seen publicly people are talking about Rodrigo. I don't know always what happened before. Every day he has been fantastic. Ever been on a team with so many treat guys with such great energy, he said no, never. He is playing great and he brings pause for us. In the middle of everything we did today. The whole group is so locked in and so committed to get better.

Phillips

He's fantastic. See his quality and poise. Kalvin bg part of us pushing last 15. Settled things down for us. Kept pushing him to be better at counter-pressing.

One point

Always important, but the focus is on the development and the work. Go to say well done to everyone but they are looking at the board for the other results. That's the focus at the moment.

Hasenhuttl

Not enjoyable, too tense. Gentleman. Great coach. Tried to be as complimentary as I cou;d. Watched him for three years there and the way he handles himself. Would have liked to beat him today, but nice to see him. Kitsy his video analyst I know from back in Salzburg.

Phillips getting 90?

Takes some time. More than a cameo. The performance we needed. Know what he means to the group. Leeds through and through. Way he plays and handles himself. Big moment for us to get him back and closer to full fitness. Big possibility from the start next weekend.

I'm sure Gareth saw he was back today. His work ethic and professionalism. Desire is fantastic. Pleasure to work with. Goal to push him and make him more intense. Expand his role from a leadership perspective. He does that and we are going to see him better and better

Point gained or two lost?

Neither way. Development of the team and a good performance and a fair result.

I think todays although nothing special, was our best performance to date under him.

If anybody should've won it probably was us, although defeat was never far away.

Still not convinced it's him or his tactics though, we are better when either 1,2 or 3 of Cooper, KP or PB plays...and a totally different side all together with the 3 of them.

The lads are playing for their skins and so they should be. Any of us could probably send them out (apart from a couple of ya).

They certainly put a shift in, their work rate is second to none.

Pleased to see us deal with the aerial bombardment efficiently, today.

Jesse Marsch pre Watford

Post by Cjay »

Marsch's here - injuries
No real updates. Tyler, Junior and Patrick good progress. Jamie Shackleton almost ready to train, not quite. Hjelde and others all available

Kalvin and Liam back
Both have a big effect in our group on and off the pitch. Liam courageous 90-plus performance. One of our best players. Matched tactically what we want from the game. Really impressive to adatpsso quickly and easily. Kalvin brought poise and settled the game down. He said he didn't do much, but just being on the pitch meant a lot. This week got them more and more to 100 per cent. Ready to contribute on Saturday.

Gaps below?
Watford really disciplined, defensive group. Don't give much away. Stay organised and compact, sometimes deep. Incredibly aggressive and lethal in transition. Second most in chances and shots in transition on the counter. Play to that strength. Have to be aware Watford is mto dangerous when we have the ball. Balanced in our approach. Don't allow their attackers to be in open spaces and running at us. Tricky preparing for them because they rotate a lot of players. A lot of good one v one players. Every time I prepare in this league it's hard to find weaknesses. Watford low in the table, but Roy has done a good job. Disciplined and organised

Hodgson training
Watched him for years. Incredible career. Passion he still has at his age is to be admired. I don't know what I will be doing then. A year in this life can feel like 10. So much respect for what he's done.

Involved in training?
I like to run training exercises. I can jump in and play sometimes. Hate being that old guy who jumps in.

Fixtures - gap?
When the schedule comes out and we have to play a lot of games in short time or a pause, it's about using that time as best we can. I don't look at short or long turnarounds. Long gaps more time for players to come in and my job to prepare the players. When we are still adapting to a new style of play, more time can be a benefit. Focusing on everything we can do for Saturday.

Importance of points ASAP?
I look only at this match. Have to look at their mindset and their chance to close the gap. We have to understand of what they will have. A good team at their place will not be easy. Focused on all these things. Our group, after Villa, has shown an understanding of what's necessary for every match. Carefully and prudently.

Month in
Really happy here. Every way. Family is here. Love living in this area. People of Yorkshire very helpful and friendly. Club has expertise and many wonderful people, skilled people. Players have been amazing. Really great fit for me and I just want to do everything I can.

Champs League expansion
I respect that tournament because we had to fight like hell to be a part of it. Austria and Czech and Switzerland have to fight as a league to gain places in the tournament. You have to earn your way in. David vs Goliath in the group phases. Do anything to compromise the integrity does not make any sense.

Gelhardt - available?
I did nto include him at the start because he has nto trained every day this week, but we think he trains tomorrow and then available at the weekend.

Summerville
Played fantastic. He has grown since I have been here. Talked to him about his behaviour and mentality. What he needs to be like when he shows up here. How to adapt to our style, the tactics and behaviours. Grown a lot in the past month. Professional behaviour and work ethic shows up in this performance. Five subs in the future - I think of him, Joffy, Greenwood and Cresswell, who deserve more chances to play. Shame I can only use three for now. Would love to have Cry in more important moments for us. Great job he is showing of learning more

Mindset for Watford and the table?
We are still ina relegation battle. We know that. Not naive. Watching the table does not do anything for that. Best thing is to control ourselves and not stress the external situation. Focused and calm and disciplined with that approach. None of us think we are safe or a completed project. All about pushing every day to be better.

Confidence in the squad?
Confidence the team believes in themselves more than they did a month ago. Spoken with them about that. That urgency and that mindset to push every day has helped us to get to a better place.

How do you protect against wide dangers?
Would not agree with that. Big part of our system of moving is not the wide areas are open it's we are ready to attack every situation. Too wide we give up too much space to them. Not as expansive as we were in the past. Big reason why we defended better is because we are not as expansive. More compact than what we were. xG and chances created we have been better in those areas because they understand the tactics. We can still be better. By saying we don't play wide is incorrect, but we know where the goal is and it;s not in the corner, it's in the middle. We want to be vertical. Opponent has to be more cautious about how much they push and attack.

Midfield selection headache
Look at everything in selection, Training means something. I am on top of it. Some managers run everything. Some don't run everything. I need to be on top of training because we need to reinforce behaviours. Evaluate how guys are training and who is grasping concepts. Koch has performed very well in training, but has not always had the decision on matchday. If and when we need him, his training means something. Opponent makes us think about the group and tactics.

What's it been like after games with managers?
Congenial, maybe too congenial for me. I appreciate the respect, a shared misery, between coaches. Strong here. Adrian Heath in the US coached at Orlando and Minnesota. Always really good after the game for beers and I hesitantly did it. Found it very rewarding. Do respect the work other people do in this business. Hard for me to be friendly with competitors because in my mind I want to not like them. Like the motivation of being driven to beat someone. Respect for Ralph Hasnhuttl is so high and when we played against them I never want the players to feel that personal relationship. Nice talk with Ralph and Brendan Rodgers after the matches. Dean Smith was mad at me for not shaking his hand.

Better appreciation of PL culture?
No, anyone knows this is the best league in the world. Any opponent video builds my respect for teams and managers. Biggest headache I have is watching the opposition and trying to find weaknesses. Makes me better and keeps me on my toes, but it gives me headaches

Great news that Joffy can play a part if necessary. JM ought to know that Watford are actually crap on their own patch, why ..I've no idea ? Nervous ? Expectations too high ? Don't know. If we can get the first goal it will pile the pressure on them as they know that to lose basically means they won't catch us in the league. Getting that first goal could be key in this game.

In JM's system we don't use wingers, not in the traditional way, very narrow system.

Greenwood is in his mind a far more natural fit hence why its Greenwood he chooses.

That's my assumption.

So whilst on paper they don't play the same position as you said in this system they probably do.

I will add that with both KP & LC back, it will definately add strength and natural balance to the team, we looked much more solid at the back against southampton, only finishing cost us 3 points.
A win on saturday will be a huge welcome relief all round, over to the players.

Certainly getting more and more direct.

The pass accuracy has taken a bit of a nose dive recently to reflect this.

70% vs Southampton
63% vs Watford

For comparison that is less than both Burnley and Norwich today.

It isn't hoofball like Burnley but at times vs Watford it was dangerously close to hopeful lofts in the general area of space where a Leeds player may be.

However in JM's defence this isn't his squad, it is a very low quality squad technically for this league which was low on confidence.

What we needed were goals and he has got those.

Will judge him on style next season
