Leeds increase in ticket sales
I'm a Sunderland fan and interested in your massive increase in support. You've always been a massive club but I've been extremely impressed.
I know promotion to the the PL always attracts more support but to go from some of your crowds in the championship to a 20,000 season ticket waiting list is staggering.
Is it mainly due to the Bielsa affect or having an ambitious owner etc?
We don't have your fanbase size but hopefully something similar would happen if we get promoted over the next few years
All the best

Sunderland have a huge potential support there just waiting on you guys making the next big push. With Jack Clarke there full time you have a good un I reckon.
Re Leeds fan base. Interestingly there was a 3% drop in season ticket renewals this time.
Bielsa affect? I think so but if course cost of living crisis is biting deeper each week.
It will be interesting how many pick up or renew membership this time.
Last season it was off the scale but most never got to tickets and may feel it is a poor return for the eye watering £75 investment.
I didn't bother as when I added it up it was two flights, 3 nights in a hotel(which is the only way to protect yourself to sky moving the game day and time) and I still had to book hospitality to see a game.
£800.

Maybe
No manager or player is bigger than the club itself.

Exactly so 64. If for no other reason passage of time ensures that.
However if a supporter isn’t born in Leeds or in the immediate area, there has to be a catalyst for them to support the club & success on the field cements the love for the team.
Take me for example. I was born & raised in the Lincolnshire Fens. My dad was a farm labourer, we lived in a tied cottage with no electricity or running water. The loo was outside & we bathed in a tin bath which was brought into the kitchen on a Friday night and we used it in turn starting with us kids. As we weren’t anywhere near a league team all the local kids supported a ‘big’ team, & unfortunately in most cases that meant the Scum. However the only reason I probably don’t support them like my brother does (we’ve not spoken in nearly 2 decades
My Dad occasionally bought the Daily Mirror & although as a 4 year old I couldn’t read I liked to look at the pictures in the paper. Some force was at work because he happened to buy the paper when Don Revie decided to change the strip to all white. I was looking at the pictures & asked my big sister to read the article to me, after she finished I declared I was going to support Leeds. My family laughed but said OK & were amazed when I was more interested in hearing the Leeds score on the radio as we had Saturday tea.
Would I have continued to do so if such amazing success which came relatively quickly hadn’t happened? However it did & any doubts I might have developed didn’t & as a result my support now is unwavering.
I never really knew how poor we were but I think my Mum was pleased because I was happy with any white T-shirt as my Leeds shirt, whereas if I’d supported the Scum they’d have really struggled to afford a shirt like so many of the other boys wore.
Like with my illogical story it’s inevitable we picked up some non native Leeds supporters because of Bielsa & getting back into the PL certainly increased the demand for season tickets. The reasons why some have not renewed can probably be attributed to a number of factors, including but not limited to:
1). Economic - if you live a fair distance away as Ian said a trip represents a large cost. In my case with fuel at its current price it’ll cost around £115
2). Taking a decision to not commit a large sum of money to watch Leeds struggle every week & concede masses of goals. The support at ER was amazing listening on LUTV, but I suspect even the most diehard fans walked away from some games with their heads bowed. A lot of people aren’t yet convinced about Marsch & some probably fear the worst & didn’t want to commit while the uncertainty exists, one might call them fickle fans, but to a degree it’s understandable.
3). Sadly mortality will also have accounted for some of the losses
Despite the reduction in season tickets purchased I imagine it’s still not going to be easy to get a ticket for ER & in general the fans will be backing the team as vocally as they did when Bielsa was in charge.

Re: Leeds increase in ticket sales
I think the ticket thing is purely down to bad management, absolutely nothing to do with a preposterous "bielsa effect " what next
The club , or whoever is in charge of ticketing hasn't a clue, less than 18 days to the big kick off and the tickets aren't on sale yet, shocking way to run a football club.
Then, there is the issue of waiting online for ages, but then you only get a 1 hour window, often the system cannot deal with certain cards either, dreadful experience all round, nothing to do with bielsa at all

Re: Leeds increase in ticket sales
I went more to Elland Road before Bielsa arrived and in fact, from his second season onwards I haven’t been due to the Bielsa effect ( and a couple of medical issues )
The combination of fab football and promotion created a massive demand for tickets. Will it continue?
All mostly depends on results and the style of football of course, but if we maintain our Premiership status I see most games being sold out so is the drawer of the top division.

Being brought up in the backstreets of Leeds, I can also relate to the tin bath & outside toilet

No other business would survive, run under similar circumstances.
