I agree, I never like fading talent. The Dutch top division is probably his limit. He plays at walking pace these daysOrange Box wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2026 9:15 pm In four years time, with his legs shot to hell and still a year left on his contract, and drawing £100k a week wages for sitting in the Forshaw Suite, who amongst us would still be happy?
A bullet dodged, in my opinion. Let’s get somebody young and hungry.

Better in my opinion to sign someone who is on the way up and although they might see us as a stepping stone that really shouldn't be seen as a negative.
This guy Brandt clearly didn't want to have to do the hard yards.

Re: Julian Brandt - Signed for Ajax
Seems a strange move for someone who had let their contract dwindle down in the hope of having lots of offers and a big pay day. Doubt Ajax can match the wages we could and it is hardly an upward move for him at all.
Very peculiar indeed but if that is his level of ambition then it probably speaks as to why he has supposedly never really made the most of the talent that people say he has. All in all then probably for the best he hasn't come here.
Wonder who will be the next 'world superstar' that I have never heard of that we will be linked with next. A few weeks back had never heard of Brandt and doubt I will hear of him again.

Re: Julian Brandt - Signed for Ajax
Was really hoping we could get this deal done, was comparing it to Sunderland signing Xhaxa , someone who went to Germany realised it was the Scottish Prem on Speed and wanted a proper challenge, here was Brandt a well known and possibly in demand player/play maker who could really make a step up and make a name for himself in the Premier League like many before him, but then you think about it and nothing against us but if he is that good then how come not one single Premier League side attempted to even go for him, apparently he could walk into any side but nobody was linked with him but us, reminds me of when Scum were chasing Sancho, anyone with eyes could see he was limited playing in the one team league scoring for fun for team number two yet Scum chased him for 18 months , nobody else was interested, that says it all, if he was any good the likes of Bayern would have had him as they always do in Germany but they weren't interested, what happened? Scum signed him and he showed how useless he was .
So back to Brandt, I know Ajax were once a European powerhouse but that's a long time ago and the Dutch league is the Irish league with money, going there shows no ambition whatsoever, European football? I don't buy that for a second, unless it's the Champions league then it's pointless, most players would be happy to play domestic football all season have most mid-weeks free, and it's definitely not money as anybody could match what they could offer, for me it's the lazy option and with no ambition or afraid to take on the big guys, we are definitely better off , lets go and get Charles and be better off with someone who's hungry and ambitious to prove themselves instead of someone who is clearly afraid of a challenge

Very good post! I'd put Ajax at lower Prem level myself but Cjay thinks they are huge so we all have an opinion...Lufc76Cor wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2026 9:49 pm Was really hoping we could get this deal done, was comparing it to Sunderland signing Xhaxa , someone who went to Germany realised it was the Scottish Prem on Speed and wanted a proper challenge, here was Brandt a well known and possibly in demand player/play maker who could really make a step up and make a name for himself in the Premier League like many before him, but then you think about it and nothing against us but if he is that good then how come not one single Premier League side attempted to even go for him, apparently he could walk into any side but nobody was linked with him but us, reminds me of when Scum were chasing Sancho, anyone with eyes could see he was limited playing in the one team league scoring for fun for team number two yet Scum chased him for 18 months , nobody else was interested, that says it all, if he was any good the likes of Bayern would have had him as they always do in Germany but they weren't interested, what happened? Historically still a big name though is what I mean.Victor_Notts-17 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2026 9:04 pm Bollocks! Ajax have not been a big name club since the 70's and they had a mini-revival in the 90's for a couple of seasons! They may dominate the Eredivisie/KNVB but they've done naff all in Europe for 30 years! Low-mid Premiership level at best man...
Go anywhere in the World people will have heard of Ajax.
I do agree it does show a lack of ambition on his part as based on his Bundesliga record even last season he should walk the Dutch league.
He's a better player than we have in his role though so that's my disappointment
Hopefully we have others lined up.

That's true, but you could say the same for Celtic, it's only a name once associated with the elite but a very long time ago, never really thought this would happen but hoped the guy had actual ambition, many good players have come out of the Dutch league the same as the Scottish League but good players with real quality don't go there, the reason being there's no need as it's a step down , a retirement home home for footballers , and I agree I hope we haven't pinned all our hopes on her and have have others lined up ( there's a young Italian guy I've heard of that's looking to impress that could be worth a punt but is rotting away in the reserves of a once great club that could be worth a shout)Cjay wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2026 10:16 pm Historically still a big name though is what I mean.

Re: Julian Brandt - Signed for Ajax
Really sorry we couldnt land Brandt, but not to be I guess.
Ajax are one of my favourite clubs, beyond Leeds, due to the Cruyff connection. Love the Eredivisie, so wish him well.
We still need to find a 10 in the next few weeks. And a 9!!

He didn't have the belief that he would be up to it in the PL. Only reason.
Wants an easy life.
The Conference thingy isn't European football ffs.

Ajax are a massive club, we consider ourselves a big club but we haven't won 4 European Cups nor have we made last 4 in the last 10 years.Lufc76Cor wrote: ↑Fri Jul 31, 2026 11:13 pm That's true, but you could say the same for Celtic, it's only a name once associated with the elite but a very long time ago, never really thought this would happen but hoped the guy had actual ambition, many good players have come out of the Dutch league the same as the Scottish League but good players with real quality don't go there, the reason being there's no need as it's a step down , a retirement home home for footballers , and I agree I hope we haven't pinned all our hopes on her and have have others lined up ( there's a young Italian guy I've heard of that's looking to impress that could be worth a punt but is rotting away in the reserves of a once great club that could be worth a shout)![]()
It's a good move for a slowing fading footballer, gets to play in the UEFA cup, maybe a title win, and doesn't have to test himself in the most physical, fastest league in the world...
Doesn't bother me he didn't come to us because he didn't ever really show any interest, the I wanna play in the premiership wasn't for our ears it was for a Chelsea or Manure... Wonder why Chelsea were not interested, he's supposed to be way better than Henderson and the other one....

My feelings too Malcolm (not about Ajax.) He would have been perfect for us in the No.10 role for a year or two as we establish ourselves. Just pray it will not come back to bite us where it hurts. To be fair all our successful signings in recent history have not been big names with successful lengthy career's behind them so I hang my hope that we can unearth another gem very soon. A good No.10 is very important imo. I actually think we would be OK if we don't sign another striker as long as we find a very good no.10, it's not ideal but there you go. The wait continues.

That's a shame. It would've been good to get a playmaker on a free, but I feel we're going to have to spend £30m now. Makes wasting £30m on Charles to sit on the bench look even more dumb.
Ajax might not be at their peak, but they're a massive club and a world renowned name, so will always be a pull. There seems to be a lot of Premier League arrogance on here tbh. Good luck to Ajax, hope they can win the Conference League.

Last time we played Ajax we were beaten 4-0. Some interesting names in their lineup that day too:

Re: Julian Brandt - Signed for Ajax
Although a good player, Brandt has taken a look at the Premier League and ran for the relative safety of the Dutch league. At 30 I don't blame him at all, he has taken the easy option and will probably play European football and get good money aswell. The step up to Premier League is a major hurdle but one thing bothers me, why didn't we find out sooner that he wasn't up to the task. I hope we have other targets that we can press ahead and strengthen the team
