Nailed on then that the ref is going to be out of his depth and make some controversial decision. My betting is on a DCL red card for high arms.

Not sure why you would go there. Howard Webb did an excellent job when he was Managing PRO (Professional Referee Organization) in the USA. The level of officiating in MLS is MUCH better now than the EPL! By some margin actually. And particularly with regard to video review. He's been dong the same job in England now for about 4 years. Maybe it's time for him to clean house and bring in some of the young Referee's that have trained under his watch. They can't be any worse!

My feeling is that they need to have specific refs that only do the video reffing. Make it so that the refs watching the videos are trained up as much as possible and just focussed on that role rather than being on the pitch one match then in the studio another time. Would be a great role for refs that could no longer ref due to fitness/injuries etc but had been really good refs.

It is a totally different skilset needed. I'm sure there are also many refs that would prefer to just be in the studio, refs that can't really man-manage as an example but can spot fouls

I have often suggested ex-players being in the studio. Ex-players that may have retired due to injury etc and so couldn't become refs but know how to spot a dive etc. Could also be ex high profile players who wouldn't want to run the gauntlet of abuse as a referee but are more than capable of learning all the rules and sitting in a studio.

Just seems like it is the same closed shop of referees constantly getting it wrong despite having the technology to help them. It isn't technology getting it wrong but the referees who get to watch the footage yet somehow get it wrong. Yet what happens, they get a week's holiday and are then it's back to work.

In MLS the VAR staff are dedicated, specialists. They are NOT field referees serving in a duel role. And I agree, it’s a much better situation!

Yes, I know her, Dave. She came with us lot to a Player Of The Year Awards dinner a few years back. We go in a different pub before the game now, so not had a chat with her lately.

LOL…Not his agent. I just got to watch him work. And he’s doing the same thing now that he did in MLS. It took him a bit of time to change the culture there too.
