Siren was on my nominations list

You surprised me there with no Waits vote :o

I presume 'Nighthawks' is not one of your favourite Tom albums

Not really. Small Change is the earliest one I like, and I don't find that the 'humorous' element of Nighthawks bears repeated listening. It's probably bottom of my list of Tom albums, and it's a long list!

Personally I prefer Waits' early work. Yes, there is a current of misogyny running through it, but I find that to be faithful to the times in which the lyrics were composed.

When I play an early Tom Waits record, say Nighthawks or Closing Time, I feel transported to dingy industrial zone taverns and crumbling streets lined with rusty land yachts and I feel a certain peace that comes from contact with a part of my childhood that I never understood at the time but do now.

I think he creates those atmospheres throughout all of his work, and tells fantastically evocative stories. I've never really experienced his lyrics as misogynistic either; he's portraying different characters' lives.
