Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 14th October) - Raphinha set to make full International debut

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 13th October, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Raph set to make full International debut

Raphinha is set to make his full Brazilian debut against Uruguay in the early hours of tomorrow morning (UK time). The 24 year old winger could not have wished for a better start to his International career; being credited with two assists, as the five time World Champions came from behind to beat Venezuela 3-1.

He was also used as a second half substitute in his last game against Columbia, and although Tite's team were unable to break the deadlock, Raph produced the kind of magic, the South American's have not seen for years! During yesterday's press conference, Tite found it difficult to hide his excitement about the Leeds star.

He can play wide, he is fast, he can cross, he can finish from middle range. But let's take it easy, too much expectation is not good. This is a moment for the team, to structure. I will keep opening chances.

Bielsa must address worrying statistic

Leeds need to stop conceding shots so freely if they are to avoid the same fate as Sheffield Utd last season. That is the stark warning given by football data Analysts Mark Carey and Tom Worville. The duo are employed by 'The Athletic', and are specialists in their field. On average, Leeds have conceded 16.6 efforts on goal per game this season, higher than any other top flight team.

Teams will always know they have been in a battle with Leeds. They continue to dominate the physical metrics across the league. Marcelo Bielsa’s side can blow a team away one week and then be on the end of a crushing defeat. As a consequence, that makes for mixed underlying numbers.

Due to their man-marking style of play out of possession, there are times when Leeds look open defensively — most notably where new signing Junior Firpo found himself pulled onto the opposite side of the pitch in the lead-up to his subsequent own goal at home to West Ham United.

The generosity in defence means they average the highest shots conceded so far, with 16.6 per 90 minutes. Bielsa must address that quickly to ensure that Leeds do not suffer the same fate as Sheffield United last season. Leeds should have enough quality to avoid relegation, but to stand a fighting chance they will need to stop conceding shots so freely.

Orta and Radz almost came to blows in a Japanese restaurant

In a recent interview with La Media Inglesa, translated by All Stats Aren’t We, Leeds Director of Football, Victor Orta disclosed that he and Andrea Radrizzani would have heated arguments during the early days of Rads tenure. Remarkably, the pair almost came to blows in a Japanese restaurant, with a famous F1 driver on the next table preparing to separate them! Fortunately, with the assistance of Angus Kinnear, the duo were able to agree on a plan moving forward!

When Andrea bought the club he presented to us the project — a club that needed a medium-term project, developing players, a young manager — an important club model. I knew the history of Leeds but didn't know the current situation.

I had a very tough meeting with Andrea, I remember it perfectly, in a Japanese restaurant. There was a famous F1 driver next to us and I'm not saying that it got physical but there was a moment in which the F1 driver nearly got up to separate us because we were shouting so much, but it was because of the passion. We wanted to talk about what club model we wanted; I had an offer to go back to Spain — he knew that, I'd told him — and I was doubting whether or not to go back.

So, after that and, above all, due to the intelligence of Angus Kinnear, we decided on the model of the project that we wanted. I told Andrea that Leeds is not a club that you can come in to do a medium-term project, relaxed, wait and see what happens with, for instance, Jay Roy Grot, having two good seasons, sell him for double etc, no. It's a club that has a historic demand and a historic weight that is incredible.

We had to battle against the parachute payments since clubs could even keep their Premier League players while in the second division; the gap was huge so we had to go for a manager who could reduce that difference, one who went over the general pay-grade for a Championship manager and who was at the top level, also while moving towards a much more immediate model of transfers.

Everything ended up with Marcelo Bielsa's name and it was either going to be an amazing success or a trip to the hospital; fortunately, it went well.

The skill Raph showed in the above twitter clip is immense. If Ronaldo were to do that in the Prem, they'd be talking about it for weeks!

Again referring to the clip, it made me smile that after bamboozling the defenders, Raph makes an incisive pass cutting through the defence, only for his teammate to fluff the shot on goal. Seems even members of the great Brazilian football team are not fast enough to keep up with his footballing brain. Reminds me of another team he plays for!

We all knew that raph would be a Brazil international soon enough. The worrying thing is that we should have strengthened during the summer with 2 midfielders and a striker. We woudnt have been in the pits of despair We are in now. I'm hoping our form can be turned round but there are about 6 senior players way past there sell by date which should have been replaced and a couple of donkeys in Roberts and hopefully never but looks like when forshaw is fit he will be the second. Add to all this crowd are back and its not looking too rosy this season. But raph deserves it and I won't be too long before he is in a team like Liverpool man City psg etc..

All boils down to the way the clubs intentions, to go forward or stagnate, at the moment we have stud still, mostly due to injuries , but, also massively, down to not recruiting in the summer.
To me it sends out clear messages to the whole team, if we aint prepared to push on , we'll lose our best talent.
I'll keep saying it, rest on your laurels in this league and you will be punished.
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

We're hard to please!

Orta spots a relatively unknown player, Bielsa moulds him into a full blown Brazilian international, fans all round the world are enjoying how he lights up the game.

And yet, among some Leeds fans, there is a "why didn't they buy more, this is a crisis, he'll up and leave now, another fine mess...and Tyler Roberts" reaction. Just sit back and enjoy it for what it is, when Bielsa goes we may well plunge down a division again and we'll have loads of time to moan then.

The stat that we allow more shots than any other team comes not from the fact that we play a man marking system but from the fact that the man marking system needs continuity to work and we've not had that with Llorente, Ayling, Koch, Struijk, Cooper even Phillips missing time and Firpo coming up to speed...

Good post, logic is probably something you can't ascribe to certain supporters, knee jerk reactions will rule the day.

Afternoon.

I'm not in the pits of despair....

Raph making us proud. Hard to think he only came in this time last year!
Let's enjoy him while we have him.
And punt him to the Saudis for 100m plus next season.

I do like the American trade system, if we sell Raph we should get good money plus cherry pick quality youth from whomever we're selling him too.

Something has to change or it will be many, many years before someone other than City, Manure, Liverpool or Chelski even come close to winning the Premier League.

Very proud of Raph, after reading that interview he did, he has definitely earned this, he has been a joy for us and i hope he stays for many years.

Unfortunately players like Raph are ambitious and dont stick around to "consolidate" so we shall see.

We are running less (a statistical fact proven by the stat people) and in simple terms if better players match our running then they will beat us 9/10.

The majority of this league man for man have better individuals overall than us, its that simple.

So we have to raise pur running stats up again, can we do that or as i suspect are these players finally feeling the effects of BielsaBall?

How do they quantify for injuries, do they use an algorithm to balance the figures or do they just use nonsense numbers?

They look at all sorts,

Distance covered overall per game
Distance covered on average per game
Distance per player per game
Sprints per game
Pressure per game (how much we press)
Allowed passes per game ( how many passes opposition teams manage before we win the ball back).

We were top for all those practically last season as we should be because its all a fundamental part of BielsaBall

We have dropped on all of them apparently

Edit- Just seen an article that suggests we are doing ok at some stats so clearly i was wrong and saw old stats

That being said i think Rab posted some running stats that showed at the time we re down on last season.

But no allowance for injury and team selection.. Makes a huge difference, we have a settled back 4 and we're toward the top of those lists not toward the bottom... We certainly halve at the very least the shots on our goal stats

moshi moshi konnichwa, Fukuyu Mati here, waiter at the Golden Shrimp restaurant. I would like to put on record what really happened between Victor and Andrea.

They were discussing the benefits of different diets and it was obvious that Andrea was promoting veganism however Victor had the opinion that the only way to go was to adhere to a carnivore diet.

it just got too much for Victor when Andrea was talking about Soya and tofu and misu soup... the benefits of eating noodles and lots of carbohydrates... the micronutrients the vitamins and minerals to be found in fruit and vegetables. Victor thought it was rabbit's food.

The remark soy boy tits started the whole thing off. Andrea retorted with pigs lips and tripe. they traded insults for a good 10 minutes.

Where do you get your protein was Victor's rallying cry, meat for muscle. Lentils on beans was Andreas reply. At which point Victor cupped his hand under his armpit and made farting noises by flapping his arm about like a chicken wing.

Andrea then picked up his misu soup and threatened to throw it in Victor's face.

In steped the formula one driver and subdued Andrea just averting disaster. The teriyaki sauce and the Korean BBQ went flying when the victor threw over the table, the coals from the Korean BBQ where all over the floor nearly setting the carpet on fire, I had to put the flames out with a bottle of Dom Pérignon.

I took some pictures of the overturned table and was going to sell them to the Sun, but Andrea promised to pay me off.

Victor said there goes a transfer budget.
