Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 28th October) - Liverpool to offer swapsies for Phillips?

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 28th October, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road.

Swapsies for Phillips

According to the Daily Express, Liverpool are weighing up the passibility of a swap deal to bring Kalvin Phillips to Anfield, and are willing to dangle a carrot in the form of one of their players as part payment.

Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino and soon to be 36 year old James Milner are all surplus to requirements at Anfield, and could be sacrificed, in their quest to snap up the England midfielder.

Attacking midfielder Minamino was signed from Salzburg on New Year's Day 2020, after Liverpool activated his £7.25 million release clause. He has played 19 times for them, scoring once. In January this year, he joined Southampton on loan. In 10 appearances, he netted twice. He has represented Japan on 33 occasions, finding the back of the net 16 times.

Origi will be a more familiar name to Leeds fans. The Belgium forward has been linked to a move to Elland Road on multiple occasions. He's 26, and has over a hundred appearances (and 19 goals) under his belt for the Merseysiders.

Milner will always be a Leeds favourite, but at 35 and over 500 appearances on the clock, how much does he have left in his tank?

Leeds line up Swift bid

Multiple media sources are this morning claiming that Leeds are primed to snap up Reading forward John Swift in the January transfer market. The versatile midfielder learnt his trade at Chelsea before Reading snapped him up five years ago. He has netted 26 times in 156 appearances for Veljko Paunovic's team. The 26yo has started this season brightly, with eight goals and six assists for fourteen appearances so far this season. Leeds have only managed eight goals and five assists all season, and are in desperate need of fresh legs in the centre of the park.

Leeds aren’t as creative or threatening as last season

Leeds aren’t as creative or threatening and goals have become an issue! Those are the words from Leeds journalist Phil Hay. The former Chief Football Writer for the Yorkshire Evening Post went on to say that without Bamford in their team, Leeds lose their balance!

I know some people don’t like xG (expected goals) but it’s a good metric for how dangerous a team are and there’s been a definite decline on that front this season. Leeds aren’t as creative or threatening and goals have become an issue. It’s fair to say that the team is at its most balanced with Bamford up front and it would help to see him come back in now. We’ll find out later in the week if he has a chance for Norwich.

Total bollocks from the Daily Express as usual regarding the alleged swap deal. Even if its true, Liverpool can do one, giving us two people who can't get a game for them plus a 35 year old in exchange for a now established England midfielder.

John Swift I would take. He looks decent from what I've seen and we desperately need someone to take the pressure off Bamford to get us goals.

Swap KP for players the manager will never play?

For years the rumour persisted that Milner would make his return when we got back to the Prem. Trouble is we took so long the years had caught up with him. Still a very fit player but he is firmly in his twilight years as a top level performer.

Interested in a Reading striker? See opening sentence. Surely he would be behind Bamford and Gelhardt.

Load of old tosh, non ao them from liverpool would fit our system, and they would be expensive (wages) bench warmers.
Hopefully we have all realised the massive mistake of summer and not recruiting, lets see what happens, as no doubt bamford will come back, the balance to the team will get better and we may sign nobody.

Swift is an attacking midfielder, not a striker.

Doubt any club would be looking at Philips until the summer. We wouldnt sell till then and price would depend very much on what division were in. If relegated he'd likely be a lot cheaper. Id imagine prospective clubs will hold off to see how our season pans out

That Japanese guy looks alright, but then again, so did the Japanese Bremner.

Whatever happened to him?

Exactly. Because of our poor start other clubs will play the waiting game over both KP and Rapha hoping that we go down and then we'll get mugged over. Leeds also have to decide whether they want to cash in if their league position is still perilous or keep hold of them hoping to stay up. You could argue that we'll definitely go down if we sold them but so far we've not proved that we're any better with them in the team. Interesting times ahead.

If we stay up then we would be in the driving seat to take full advantage of our 2 biggest assets, Phillips and Raphinha and make any potential dealings really worthwhile for Leeds United.

If we are relegated (a distinct possibility on current form) then we’ll no doubt get scammed and lose at least those two for a lot less than their true worth. Baring that in mind, if we receive an offer which is too good to refuse in January would we go for it? It’s quite a conundrum!

Watching the highlights of two previous games against Norwich on the match thread it’s a stark reminder that we have never quite replaced Pablo Hernandez. Raphinha is an excellent player, skilful, full of energy and very dynamic but doesn’t (yet) have the guile, finesse or subtlety of Hernandez. Just imagine if we still he’d Pablo in his pomp playing alongside Raphinha.

Meslier
Drameh
Llorente
Struijk
Dallas
Phillips
Shackleton
James
Raphinha
Rodrigo
Gelhardt

Looks decent to me, assuming Ayling, Firpo and Bamford are still not available.

Millner has no sale value, in fact they'd need to cover his salary and still pay the fee

Can't see Milner coming now. He's past the nostalgia stage of his career. I could see him moving into the backroom staff at Liverpool. Him and Klopp seem to have a great relationship. It will all depend on how much he still wants to lace up the boots.

Swift in name swift in nature?

We are struggling all over the pitch but that creativity that Hernandez used to provide would cost a lot of money in the PL. When Pablo was on the ball there was hardly any intention of playing it backwards, he wanted runners infront of him and he had the intelligence to nearly always pick the right option when he was on it. I agree he would have been a dream foil for Raph and no doubt he would have bought the best out of Rodrigo aswell. He made things happen! We were lucky to have him.

Indeed, Eire

Phillips is going nowhere in January, maybe not next summer too!

Hernandez was an inspiration.

His actual role though was quite difficult to define.

Llorente & Struijk have been our best CB pairing since late December 2020, but our captain is at the front of the pecking order. Shacks will remain as a RWB. Klich in midfield with Roberts playing behind Rodrigo. It's not certain whether Raphinha is fit to start yet! Can't see MB deviating much from the team I expect him to play.

Personally I would to enjoy seeing Drameh, Striujk & Gelhardt start, playing alongside our best players Llorente, Phillips & Raphinha.

Also, would love to see two DM's start, that would mean Forshaw & Phillips together, thought it worked a treat at the Emirates last Tuesday night

I expect to take a hammering for my last comment

He was, however we soon got rid of him because of his little legs couldn't run fast any more!

I personally don't see any point in signing Milner, as Faaip says a very expensive signing with no longevity, hence no financial return.

I think Leeds should say £100 million.

Or, if they are keen on a swap, Origi, Milner, Minamino plus €100 million
