Is Russia preparing to invade Ukraine?

Post by 1964white »

The US and its allies have threatened new sanctions if the Russian military takes action.

Washington is expected to put its position in writing next week, and then further discussions will be held.

I don't think we do. A lot of ours comes from the North Sea via our own proction and Norway. Next biggest is LNG from Qatar. A lot of mainland Europe's gas comes from Russia though, about 35%. Some countries, including Germany are even more reliant on Russia.

Any 'war' with Russia resulting in sanctions ot the cutting off od gas pipeline would have massive ramifications though.

Couple of years ago there was a BBC news piece on the amount of gas we imported from Russia, and the issues we would have if we didn't get it. That's where I got it from

Cannot see a war tbh. Russia posturing on the border is shotgun diplomacy to test the Biden administration. Russia will probably walk away from this in a better position. The Western powers have in the main weak governments with respective populations that in truth want to avoid conflict at any cost.
Russia has nothing to lose by maintaining the veiled threat of invasion into Ukraine. It has suffered heavy sanctions for years with little effect on its economy.

Is the issue one of NATO poking the bear over the Crimea?

For over a century, people in Europe have been beguiled by rich business men into hating and then fighting one another in manufactured conflicts. In our time it's now the Ukraine and her people that are beguiled and devided into conflicting western and eastern halves. It began with an illegal takeover of government by a chosen clique of pro democracy, pro western gangsters that grabbed power during bloody demonstrations in Kiev that were manufactured by Nato and the west.

Is it all just about trade and profits, or is it all about wrestling the Crimea from Russia's hands along with her naval bases?

The eastern Ukraine is a killing field and the body count of young men beguiled into fighting a patriotic war against Russian supported separatists is huge. Is it worth sacrificing the lives of countless young men just to deprive Russia of naval bases it captured for the allies during WW2?

Some good points in this thread - it would be nice to say it's all tosh but there's at least a grain of truth to a lot of it.

I'm not getting bogged down in hypotheses though.

You say pro democracy and pro western like they're bad things.

As for chosen cliques and grabbing power, they're up against Putin and Russia, the masters of that behaviour.
