THANK YOU CARLOS
WBA seemed to have the game there for the taking when they went 1-0 up ... Corberan made a subtle change at half-time by pushing their back line 15 yards higher up the pitch, allowing them to get extra bodies forward and put Leeds under pressure ... the plan was to exploit the space Leeds were giving up with the way they started play from deep, and then break up play in the Leeds half to counter quickly
It worked to perfection when Ayling gave the ball away cheapy and WBA countered at pace, won a corner and before we knew it they burgled a goal ... they had the lead and the signs looked ominous as the Baggies had started the second half on the front foot and were playing in the Leeds half a lot more
Then Corberan fkd them completely
He took off Swift, who had been immense sweeping in front of the defence ... he was particularly effective in getting at Shackleton and Ayling, and wasn't afraid to track Ayling when necessary, specially as Phillips wasn't able to keep bombing up and down the touchline after Luke
In Swift's place he brought on Sarmiento, a young attacking midfielder who immediately moved higher up the pitch ... this suited Leeds, as it opened up more space to play into, and also gave Ayling a lot more freedom out wide as Phillips struggled to get oxygen into his lungs to track back
The result was that Ayling had a free run into the box to head in a well-deserved equaliser with Phillips nowhere to be seen ... I am baffled as to why Corberan changed his shape this way, because Swift was that extra insurance for them ... I can only think that he wanted the team's mindset to be "keep going forward lads" rather than have them drop deeper and try to defend a one goal advantage
After Ayling's goal he made the change he maybe should have made at 1-0 up ... he brought on a proper left-back to deal with the problem out wide, and as a result WBA started to struggle to get up the field as they seemed panicked by Leeds pace and desire to attack them out wide
Leeds should have won, no doubt, and on the evidence of this game I honestly believe we can have a strong season ... the club just needs to add depth to the squad, let's say another 24 players
Farke looked very pleased at the final whistle, and he should be considering this team isn't his preferred starting eleven ... a solid point, we will smash them at theirs in the return

Ayling was vital to his plans last night, along with Byram.

Yep and not an ounce of acknowledgement from his detractors.YorkshireSquare wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 10:58 am Lot of work for Luke to be doing. Bombing up the whole touchline and cutting in to the middle when the delivery is coming from the other flank.
He ran in and headed that ball where a centre forward should be.
Work that out, brains of britain footballing guys, look at the minute on the clock he scored, look at the runs he'd already made down that flank, look at the cross he puts in for the flick on by Rutter when DJ should've scored, look at his support play, look at his graft for the gaffer.
But no, let's scream for some jumped up kid to replace him, let's knock him for sprinting back knackered after doing what his gaffer tells him,
I've told you before, this game isn't for some, and they should try Cricket.

To me, as soon as West Brom scored, I believe they thought they could sit on their lead. Leeds pushed them back and back, and Brom just couldn't HACK it.
Farke had our players playing to capacity; I don't think another coach could have got more out of them. I think our double pivot linked-in well; Brom were lucky to get their goal!!

Excellent post and it emphaises something I have siad many times about how people make points after matches and say if the manager had made this change we win. They never acknowledge that the change they suggested could have backfired spectacularly. The common example being to bring a striker on when you are behind, but you can go from being in control of possession to creating chances to going to a team that can't create chances anymore. Like you say without the change yesterday maybe WBA go on to win. Certainly for a few minutes after their goal it was all WBA.Billys Statue wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 10:42 am WBA seemed to have the game there for the taking when they went 1-0 up ... And that was a bloody good header too. It wasn't an easy chance at all and I don't really think of Ayling in terms of his heading but I reckon more strikers wouldn't have scored that than would.Kennyb41 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 11:09 am Yep and not an ounce of acknowledgement from his detractors.

Now in the build up to our goal Gelhardt lost control of the ball but managed to poke it through to Dan James who crossed early for Ayling. If Gelhart hadn't have got his toe to the ball, WBA win possession, if they launch the ball forward then Ayling has zero chance of getting back into position. Those are the fine margins but if Luke doesn't commit to going forward then we don''t get the equaliser.
It is the risk v reward scenario but with the way we are looking to set up if Ayling is out of position then Rodon can step accross to RB, Ampadu steps into defence in place of Rodon and Gray drops into Ampadu's position to shield the defence. If we concede a goal due to Ayling being cuaght out upfield then it is someone else who is out of position that is the problem.

The only time this worked previously was when KP dropped back between our CB’s allowing them to move wider to cover Ayling, he hasn’t had that successfully since.
In the post match interview last night, Ayling said he was in a new role further forwards this season, which means he’s a right midfielder/winger when we attack and is probably not expected to be back at full back within seconds if we lose possession.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good on Ayling when this happens because we see him as our full back first and foremost.

Re: THANK YOU CARLOS
Ayling said in his interview he's been asked to play further forward so I expect DF has put provisions in place as you say Weasel. I've always preferred Ayling attacking rather than defending as I don't think he's that good a defender tbh.

Well said. In possession we basically become 3 at the back with Ampadu as a 3rd centreback and Ayling and Byram as wingers.Finnatic wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 3:00 pm In the post match interview last night, Ayling said he was in a new role further forwards this season, which means he’s a right midfielder/winger when we attack and is probably not expected to be back at full back within seconds if we lose possession.

Re: THANK YOU CARLOS
Farke will come good: mark my words! I think he is (and was) fully aware of the state of the club when the 49'ers offered him the job. The Sini/Gnonto situations may have surprised him but I think the gravity of the job in hand was always clear to him. I am 100% behind Farke and believe he will turn this situation and our fortune around given time. I believe we have a 2 year plan to get back to the Prem. I doubt we will go up this season but I expect us to win the Championship nest season...Billys Statue wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 1:44 pm Agree 100% that Farke is better for Leeds right now than Corberan
