Although English football has featured some top American professionals over the years, such as Brian McBride and Brad Friedel, snapping up a player from the States is widely regarded as a bit of a gamble. Clubs simply don’t want another Jozy Altidore on their hands. As such, when Leeds United signed American players in the past, they arguably faced more scrutiny than most.
Despite the apparent risks attached when it comes to obtaining the services of an American player, Leeds have purchased a few American professionals over the years. While sports fans in America might be more interested in other pastimes like the NFL, and they occasionally assess the latest NFL odds before having a flutter, there is still an appetite for the beautiful game. As such, they’re continually producing professional players, and the USA has sent its fair share of them to Leeds. Some have been a success, while others have struggled to impress, though.
Mike Grella turned professional at the club
During a time when Leeds were desperate to get back to the top of English football, signing players like Mike Grella was regularly on the agenda. Grella was a talented player with ability, but he wasn’t a professional after turning out for sides like the Long Island Rough Riders. Grella earned a trial at Leeds, though, and impressed enough to earn his first professional contract with the club. A consummate professional who always gave his all, Grella made plenty of cameos off the bench, making an impact in the Championship before departing the club permanently after a few loan spells in the lower leagues. Grella tried, he was clearly desperate to succeed at Leeds, but the step up to the professional game probably showed in the end.Tyler Adams’ injury issues impacted his move
After joining the club from RB Leipzig on a five-year contract, big things were expected of Tyler Adams in the Premier League. The American midfield general’s time at the club can be regarded as a major disappointment, though, with Adams leaving Leeds following their relegation to the Championship. His contribution in England’s top flight was small, making just 26 appearances for Leeds during the 2022-23 campaign due to a hamstring injury that hindered his playing time. Adams could well have made a difference to Leeds’ fortunes that season but it’s a move that just didn’t work out. Still, most Leeds fans wish Adams well and hope he can stay fit at Bournemouth.
