Leeds United may currently be stuck in the Championship for the second season in a row, but you don’t need anyone to tell you that their goal for this season is to climb back up to the Premier League. They suffered relegation in 2023 and failed to overcome Southampton in the 2024 play-off final, but their fans are hoping that 2025 will be their year. Will Leeds United return to the Premier League next year?
At this stage in the season, it’s honestly too early to call. There is a long season ahead and a lot can change. But looking at performances and results so far this season, they’re certainly one of the favorites to climb back up to the English top-flight.15 games in, they sit in 3rd place, just 2 points away from the top, so they are still very much within reach. Remember, 3 teams will be making the jump from the Championship to the Premier League at the end of the season. But if Leeds really want to qualify automatically, then they should be eyeing the top two spots.
As we know too well, the teams sitting first and second on the table gain automatic promotion to the Premier League, while teams placed 3rd to 6th battle for the last spot via the play-offs. Of course, Leeds finished 3rd in the Championship last season which meant that they had to go through the playoff rounds. They got past Norwich City in the semi-finals after beating them 4-0, and that set them up against Southampton who had beaten West Brom 3-1.
The final was very keenly contested but Southampton eventually went away 1-0 winners and earned promotion to the Premier League, which forced Leeds to remain in the Championship for yet another season. To avoid the possibility of something like that happening again next year, Leeds United have to do whatever they can to ensure that they make it to first or second.
But it won’t be easy. These guys lost some of their best players in the summer. Georgino Rutter, Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville plus a bunch of other players left this summer alone. But at least, they were able to bring in a few players to replace some of them like Largie Ramazani, Jayden Bogle, and Ao Tanaka, and to be fair, they have been playing pretty well.
Their performances against the top 2 teams (2-0 win against Sheffield and 2-2 draw against Sunderland) show that they are indeed ready to fight for those spots, and we’ll see how well they do. But basically, if Leeds United continue in this fashion until the end of the season, there’s nothing stopping them from returning to the Premier League in 2025.
