Dogs and Sharia Law

Post by Sean_Nile »

Dogs are haram under Sharia law, you can't have them as pets... only as guard dogs. Muslims say they are frightened of people walking their dogs. Have these latest rules pandered to their beliefs about dogs

Keeping Dogs Indoors: Narrations in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim state that angels of mercy do not enter a house containing a dog or pictures/images. Consequently, keeping a dog inside living quarters without a functional purpose is discouraged or prohibited by many scholars.

Permitted Uses for Dogs
Islamic law explicitly allows keeping dogs for practical, working purposes, including:
Hunting: The Quran (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:4) explicitly permits consuming game caught by trained hunting dogs.

Guarding: Protecting property, livestock, or farms.
Service Roles: Modern scholars widely extend permissible uses to guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and therapy animals.

Differing Interpretations Across Islamic Schools
Legal opinions vary depending on the school of thought (Madhhab):

Maliki School: Considers living animals, including dogs, to be fundamentally pure (tahir). Contact with a dog's fur or saliva does not break prayer purity, though keeping them indoors without cause remains discouraged.
Hanafi School: Views only the dog's saliva, breath, and waste as impure, but not the dog's fur or body when dry.

Shafi'i & Hanbali Schools: Hold the strictest view, classifying the entire dog as inherently impure.

I’ve read a lot of weird stuff in my life Sean but this is right up there at the top.
Our local beaches are always closed to dogs in the summer months due to dangers from dog fouling & risk to children. Ziggy our mental Jack Russell crossed with the Anti-Christ really dislikes black labradors so maybe there’s a touch of racism in there as well although he also hates pigeons, cats, squirrels , sausage dogs, bicycles and little stihs on scooters.

Exactly, it's either Sean on a wind up or he's been away from Britain for too long, he needs to stay off the far right social media. We have dedicated dog beaches and or dedicated times they can walk dogs on British beaches It's just common sense to keep most beaches clear of disease carrying dog s**t.

Granted there may be restrictions regarding beaches but I have to disagree that Muslims do not have a negative attitude towards dogs.

When I lived in the UK people were fastidious about scoop a poop, carrying biodegradable bags, and here in Finland on nature trails they have bins where you can drop off your poop bags so you don't have to carry them around.

We had a song called Senile Fools: was really good (at the time). I don't know why we didn't put it on our first album. Anyway, Senile Fools (I am the guy on the left smokin' a tab): 1985 btw. Me: guitar-vocals / Les: bass-vocals / John: drums-vocals...

I must confess that I did not know that keeping dogs as pets is haram in Islam, and I would bet that few secular folks would know anything about it either... that is why the opinions range from weird to who gives a feck... Since it is an odd concept. Especially if you are British and love dogs.

But if you believe that you will loose some spiritual reward or merit by having a dog as a pet then you wouldn't want to forfeit any blessings.

"Loss of qirat refers to the decrease in spiritual reward for a person, specifically mentioned in a hadith that states, "Whoever keeps a dog, except for herding, hunting, or farming, will lose one qirat of his reward every day."

You learn something new every day.

A woman, a donkey, and a black dog can invalidate prayers if they pass in front of a person praying, as stated in various hadiths.

Aisha bint Mohammed commented on this and doing some research on this I found the following.

In Arabic ("Daughter of")
In Arabic, bint literally means "daughter" or "girl."
When used in Arabic names (e.g., Fatimah bint Muhammad), it functions as a patronymic link meaning "daughter of."

Apparently BINT was a slang word that British soldiers brought back from the middle east... Who would have thought it... Surprised me.

I love dogs, I’ve had dogs all my life, I’ve worked with Guide Dogs, I’ve rescued dogs so I have an interest in dogs.

But I haven’t got a frigging clue what this thread is about.

It could be that you are just not aware of the concepts of Haram(forbidden) dogs as pets and Halal(permissable)

Seems we are all separated by a cultural divide.
