Initially he played with non-league clubs, Leyland and Oaks Fold. He had trials with Preston North End but joined Leeds, after being demobbed from the Irish Guards where he was a regular soldier, in May 1946. He was one of the few men to play League football in spectacles. He later wore contact lenses and once lost a lens and tackled Liverpool referee Bill Evans! He moved to Second Division Barnsley in July 1950 and spent a season there, making thirty-two appearances in the League and one in the F.A. Cup. His father, Ernest, played for Preston North End and Manchester City before World War One. He died in 1991.
