Tyrer worked as a plumber before turning professional with Leeds in September 1950. Starting with Manchester City, he played in the Cheshire League with Mossley as a wing half and scored three goals in twenty-three appearances. He earned himself the reputation of being an accurate crosser of the ball and a man with a fierce shot and this prompted Leeds to buy him from Mossley for a record fee for the Cheshire club of £2,000. He was in and out of the side at Leeds and in July 1954 went to Non-League Peterborough United, before moving to Third Division South side Shrewsbury Town in June 1955, where he scored three goals in twenty-four League games. His best days were undoubtably at Aldershot, whom he joined in June 1956, and he scored nine times in two hundred and thirty-four League games for them until going back into Non-League football with Hereford United and then Fleet FC in 1964.
