Jimmy Armfield became Leeds United manager in 1974 in the aftermath of Brian Clough's disastrous tenure. He did a commendable job of restoring order, taking the club to the 1975 European Cup final, where they were controversially defeated by Bayern Munich. Armfield remained in charge until 1978, maintaining Leeds as a competitive top-flight side before moving into a highly respected career in football journalism and broadcasting.
