Carabao Cup, 1st Round

A crowd of 35,129 were in attendance to watch Leeds safely progress to the second round of the Caribou Cup, but like just they did against Cardiff last weekend, took the long route!

The Shrews, to their credit, more than played their part. They were a well disciplined unit, operating a high press, forcing Leeds into mistake after mistake (in the opening half). Leeds would work hard to retrieve the ball, only to give it away seconds later, a common theme, seen all too often from the Whites, in recent times.

Leeds started brightly. Dan James, Leo Hjelde and Archie Gray all sent early warning shots across Shrewsbury's bow, but failed to test Marko Marosi, between the sticks.

The visitors struck first, just before the half hour mark. Tom Bayliss played a clever ball into Taylor Perry whose strike took a wicked deflection off Leo Hjelde, leaving Karl Darlow stranded. The ball looped up, crashing against the woodwork, on its way in.

Chorus's of boos were heard from large sections of the Elland Road crowd as Farke's side retreated to the dressing room at half time. Whatever was said during the interval did the trick, and within seven minutes were level.

Marosi was only able to parry away Ian Poveda's effort, and Gelhardt was in the right place at the right time to stab the ball home from close distance. Whether he knew too much about it, is another question.

Leeds now had the bit between their teeth, and five minutes later took the lead. Ampadu jumped highest, trying to connect with James' corner. This drew Flanagan out of position, as the ball bounced across the penalty area where Pascal Struijk was on hand to volley Leeds into the lead!

Leeds had chances to extend their lead as Matt Taylor's team began to tire, but as we saw against Cardiff, poor finishing let them down. Leeds face a trip to Salford City in the second round.

Its a potential cup upset that's why it's televised and it as happened plenty of times where Leeds are concerned

Darlow 6 - Not a lot to do. Bad deflection on goal. But distribution wasn't great.

Ayling 7 - Lots of attacking contributions in 1st half. More reserved in 2nd.

Hjelde 6 - Didn't do a lot wrong before he was taken off at HT. Farke obviously likes Byram as a more attacking option

Cresswell 7 - Steady. Composed. Fairly easy game for him.

Ampadu 8 - Composed at the back in the 1st half. Key to controlling the game when he moved into midfield

Shackleton 8 - Lively performance from him. Played variously at RB, MC and AMR. Showed great energy throughout

Gyabi 5 - Tough game for him. Showed a lot of energy. But put under a pressure a few times playing out from back. Needs more game time (reserves) to get up to pace

Gray 8 - Looks a class above everyone else. Great work rate and several clever moments. Exciting prospect

Poveda 8 - Part of all the best moments going forward, including the opening goal. Started AMR, later moved into the 10.

James 7 - Showed his extra pace several times down the left. Went close a couple of times. Just expect a touch more end product

Gelhardt 6 - Did well to deflect the goal from point blank range. Lots of running and pressure. Lacks a little composure.

Subs:

Byram 7 - Free role at LB as Shrewsbury offered nothing 2nd half

Strujik 7 - Brought more solidity in the 2nd half. Easy 45. Took his goal well

MOTM
1. Ampadu
2. Poveda
3. Gray
4. Shackleton
5. James
6. Ayling
I'll post my ratings up later.

The big surprise for me was Shackleton, :o How good was Shacks?

Poveda was a constant menace.

I would start Cresswell alongside Rodon at Birmingham, he won so many headers against the Shrews giants.
