Hold steady Ybor City. You're up to your neck in sweat and wet confetti.
If you want to get a little bit heady.
It's gonna have to get a little bit heavy.
We're jamming jetskis into the jetty now.
With some guy who looks like Rocco Sefredi.
And I've heard he's been dead once already.

A thousand kids will fall in love in all the clubs tonight.
A thousand other kids will end up gushing blood tonight.
Two thousand kids wont get too much sleep tonight.
Two thousand kids they still feel pretty sweet tonight.

Someway Somehow I heard this week of release back in the day, probably on some late night radio show and I was blown away. The best new piece of guitar based music I'd heard for 20 years, it blew away my "guitar band" apathy that had permeated through me for years. I spent the next day trying to track down the album..I did so with my fifth record shop in my third town

Rock had a new hero

The intro is top 5 OAT for me too

Hold Steady of course still hold my track of the decade 2000's ...but that comes later and is not on this album....It's a journey folks, or it is to me. Franz Nikolay's banjo on that btw kills me every-time

New Craig Finn album came out last week, half way through listening, sounds like it could be a goodie.

It's not The Hold Steady's best, that's the genius concept album that is Separation Sunday..It is the equal of Boys and Girls though that gets a massive lift from Hot Soft Light , which features one of greatest riffs laid down and Same Kooks for which the organ was invented, never since Booker T for me.

I'm unclean, a libertine
And every time you vent your spleen
I seem to lose the power of speech
You're slipping slowly from my reach
You grow me like an evergreen
You've never seen the lonely me at all

Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing

This has been a favourite since it came out. I'd give it five stars for the immaculate guitar tone alone - the moment when the guitar kicks in on Pure Morning is one of the best guitar sounds on record. It's similarly awesome on Brick Shithouse, the title track, and Scared of Girls.

The songwriting combines a dark melancholy, sleazy grit and visceral defiance - everything you want in a rock record. It wears its influences well, without being derivative of any of them. It would sit alongside early post-punk classics, yet still sounds fresh over twenty years later.

Then there's Molko's voice, which divides opinion, but for me is a perfect compliment to the music; he absolutely wears his heart on his sleeve and is lyrically fearless.

If I was going to criticise, then My Sweet Prince and Burger Queen lack the intensity of the standout tracks, but not enough to dock it a point.

Love Molko's voice btw....The debut was good but WYIN blew it away and I'm not kidding I cannot think of a better rock album by a British band...nothing close at all. Mansuns - Attack of the Grey Lantern, A Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro, Radioheads - OK Computer and Massive Attacks - Heligoland are all a couple of points behind but occupy 2-5
