Match Thread Plymouth Argyle v Leeds Utd Match Thread

Post by Ellandback1 »

6th February 7:45pm | Home Park

Focus shifts back to the FA Cup on Tuesday evening as Leeds make the 650 mile round trip to Plymouth Argyle, live on BBC One. Adam Randells's 73rd minute strike, earnt the Pilgrims a replay, and a second trip in as many weeks to enjoy its maritime heritage and coastal pleasures. The two sides lock horns in the league next week, but must first battle it out to see who faces a trip to either Stamford Bridge or Villa Park in round five!

New signing Connor Roberts is ineligible, so will have to wait until the weekend when Rotherham are the visitors to Elland Road, to see him in action. Stuart Dallas (leg), Pascal Struijk (groin), Dan James (knee) and Karl Darlow (thumb) are Leeds only injury absentees.

Five games in fifteen days this month, Leeds Manager Daniel Farke must surely want to make changes to the side that beat Bristol City at the weekend. Crysencio Summerville is due a rest, and with James recovering from a knock he took against Preston, Wilfred Gnonto and Jaidon Anthony (the goalscorers from Leeds last two games) are set to deputise.

It remains to be seen whether Daniel Farke can afford to rest Welsh duo Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon. Both have been instrumental for the Whites this season, but why risk injury in a Cup game?

I think it will be the usual balance between keeping our spine and making changes. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ampadu and Rodon both starting but can see Cooper given a start to keep him sharp.

GK Messlier
RB Shackleton
LB Byram
LCB Cooper
RCB Rodon
DM Ampadu
CM Gruev/Gray
LW Anthony
RW Gnonto
10 Rutter/Gelhardt
FW Piroe

Bench everyone else

It will be a mixture of regulars and fringe players again I expect.
Rutter, Summerville and Gray need a rest and shouldn't be anywhere near the starting line up but Rutter will probably start.
For me, it should be:
Meslier
Byram
Rodon
Cooper
Firpo
Gnonto
Ampadu
Kamara or Gruev
Shackleton
Anthony
Piroe

From the presser……

Pascal Struijk and Daniel James will both miss this game. Jamie Shackleton is unwell with illness, so he is a major doubt to travel. All the other players came through the last game without any injuries and are available.”

Pretty close to what I'd do. Playing Kamara and Gruev makes sense. Next week, all being well, Gray can be part of the midfield mix. And when Strujik comes back, we'll have 4 options in the middle.

Shackleton ill, but if he makes a recovery I'd like to see him involved. Would like Joffy to get some time too.

Realistically though I don't see Farke starting Cresswell, Joseph, or Gelhardt.

A trip to Chelsea or Villa has made this game a little more enticing. Both exciting prospects. But Chelsea especially give they're such a huge club and can lose to anybody at the moment.

Really think he should give all the fringe players a game. It's what's fair really. They put in the work in training. And in the case of Cresswell and Gelhardt were told they couldn't go out on loan. I want to win this. But I don't want to risk anyone ahead of Rotherham and I do feel some of the benchwarmers deserve a game.

He's not cup tied. He can play in the 5th round if we go through. He just can't play in a replay because he wasn't registered for the original game.

I think we had exactly the same situation when Rutter (aka Georginio) arrived last January and couldn't play in the replay against Cardiff.

I with you AJ. If Farke wants the big guns to travel then leave them on the bench and bring them on if needed late on. We should have enough to beat Plymouth even with changing a few up.

If this replay is level at the end of 90 + minutes does it go to extra time or straight to pens ?

We definitely dont need extra time
