The dawn of the new season

And so the dawning of the new Football League season approaches. Tonight is the night where you can’t sleep, tossing and turning in your bed, the excitement, the nervous anxiety building keeping you from your slumber. Sure there was the League Cup games last week but that was just a warm up, a glorified pre-season friendly, tomorrow is what matters, tomorrow really counts. Expectation levels amongst Leeds United fans ahead of the 2011/2012 season was high following our young players overachievement during their first season back in the Championship. This year however expectations are somewhat more subdued.

The team faltered last season, what had looked once like being a promising season soon slid into mediocrity and Simon Grayson paid the price. The new manager came in and declared the squad not fit for purpose. Warnock was quoted recently in the Yorkshire Evening Post as saying “I found myself standing on the touchline last season thinking ‘nobody here, and I really mean nobody, is irreplaceable.’ That’s how bad it was”. That squad has been all but dismantled now, out star player sold and a new team built over the summer months.

Leeds have certainly been busy in the transfer window, makes a change from previous summers, let’s just remind ourselves of all the comings and goings;

OUT: Andy O’Brien (Vancouver), Robert Snodgrass (Norwich), Andy Lonergan (Bolton), Adam Clayton (Huddersfield), Maik Taylor (Millwall), Mikael Forssell (released)

IN: El-Hadji Diouf (Doncaster), Lee Peltier (Leicester), David Norris (Pompey), Andy Gray (Barnsley), Jamie Ashdown (Portsmouth), Luke Varney (Portsmouth), Rodolph Austin (Brann), Paddy Kenny (QPR), Jason Pearce (Portsmouth), Paul Green (Derby), Adam Drury (Norwich)

The defence has certainly been bolstered and the, in my opinion, slightly error prone Andy Lonergan replaced with a more experienced keeper. The midfield also looks a lot more solid and there is a bit more strength in depth which we have been lacking in recent seasons. If we can tie Ross McCormack to a deal then we should have good enough striking options. The major issue for me is creativity. Howson and Snodgrass will both be big losses, their ability to get up the field and create chances was key to Graysons teams best performances. If we have, if we can replace that creativity I think we have a fighting chance at the play-offs.

So how do you think we will do in the new season?

I tend to agree, was at saints last season and walked away thinking oh s**t and heaved sigh of relief when we went on decent run. This season I really don't have a clue what to expect (except more Bates controversy). I will settle for a solid season, giving the 'new' Leeds time to find their feet and gel as a group. Top 10 finish with a full confident squad storming the Championship next season is my prediction!

Would love to see all this Bates/takeover crap go away as well; it's giving us a bad rep (not that we have a good one lol) and we need to concentrate on football

I expect this season may start slowly for us - with so many ins and outs it could take at least a month, or two, for the squad to gel and get to know each other... and also to adapt to Warnock's style of play/tactics. It's also a tough start fixture wise. My guess is that we will be just above mid-table at Christmas, and that we will push on from there and finish strongly, for once. Hopefully into a top-six, but very little chance of automatic promotion.

I really hope we've had our last Blackpool/Preston/Forest/Barnsley humiliation. Expect lower scoring matches, but a less calamitous defence.

The joker in the pack is of course the takeover - two or three 'marquee' signings could change everything. And I do wonder if that might actually be possible even without any takeover; if the existing board could find a spare ~5 million from somewhere; and take a risk...?!

Some many hope's, so many let downs these past few seasons.
This season is going to be DIFFERENT! we have a squad together that under NW can and I'm sure will perform, I do think we need another striker - undoubtedly the manager is aware of that.
A top six is definately on the cards though it certainly will be a tough ride. Who knows with a bit of luck (which we are surely due) and key players avoiding serious injury, even better than that.
We should forget about Bates, forget about the takeover and get behind the lads.......... MOT

Totally the opposite this time round.

Very optimistic
Really?

Opposite for me, felt optimistic going into last season off the back of our good first season in the Championship. The Southampton game certainly put that to rest though. I really dont know what to think this year, no idea how this sqaud is going to perform.
