Re: Who do you hold responsible?
I went with Jesse because he is wedded to his system and won't change like Bielsa, that will be his downfall eventually. I think it's the system he plays as lots of poster have said it's too narrow.
Look at Villa and to a certain degree Liverpool were the width is provide by the full backs. If we stick with Villa under SG they tried to play this system and it didn't work for them.
Yesterday they went with proper wingers in a 4-2-3-1 and the got joy. Imagine it for a sec Sini and Harrison taken men on out wide, driving at them into the box it creates a bit of madness in opposition penalty areas. Pull backs to CF (take your pick Rod or Pat or Joffy or Willy) shots cutting in, direct attacking football put with a high press this is want we need.
Full backs bombing on is gone teams have figured it out.

Re: Who do you hold responsible?
Big Sam would achieve a lot more with this squad than JM although he wouldn't be my choice. I do think Big Sam gets unfairly labelled with the likes of Pulis etc as playing awful football whereas his BOlton side, who he managed for several years were very entertaining with the likes of JJ Okocha etc. Big Sam has had to make the most of what he has had available at the various clubs since rather than building a side. Tatty, as suggested by BHP would be my option, or Poch if he was interested. Valvered, as suggested by Cjay looks a good option too and I'm sure there are countless options out there - needless to say before we hired JM I had never heard of him and he wouldn't have been on my list after I read up on him.

He has done an incredible job in Norway for FK Bodø/Glimt, properly amazing.
First season after finishing 11th the season before he arrived he took them to 2nd and won the Coach of the Year award.
Next season they won the league for the first time ever, lost only once, scored over 100 goals and conceded only marginally over 1 per game.
They won it again the following season.
And he lead them to the group stages of a European football competition for the first time where they finished 2nd behind Jose Mourinho's Roma.
During that time his side became the first team ever to put 6 past a Jose Mourinho side (think of the teams and managers over the years who can't say that).
Also in the group stage unbeaten vs Roma (win and a draw).
Saw of Celtic 5-1 on aggregate.
Beat Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 only to meet Jose again in the Quarter Final.
Beat them 2-1 in Norway but got a battering in Rome and were knocked out.
Thus season they are still in with a chance of making it through the Europa League group stage with Arsenal, PSV and FC Zurich.
Lost to Arsenal 3-0 at the Emirates but still had 8 shots 4 on target and at home narrowly lost 1-0 limiting Arsenal to just 7 shots 1 on target to there 6 shots 1 on target.
Drew with PSV 1-1 in Holland.
Given the financial gulf between FK Bodø/Glimt and all those above teams the fact they were even competitive is a miracle in itself never mind beating teams like Roma (more than once) and AZ Alkmaar and drawing with PSV and giving Arsenal a scare.
Were they sit back and defend hoof ball merchants? Absolutely not.
When they beat Roma 2-1 they had 15 shots and 58% possession.
When they beat then 6-1 54% possession.
But yes they did sit back in some games, But they got results.
His job in Norway is comparable to what Graham Potter did in Sweden.
Very impressive
May not be right for us in our predicament but he was a leading contender for the Brighton job and I am sure someone will give him a chance.
In many ways though he could be perfect.
Plays attacking, high octane possession based football.
Lots of faith in youth and used to overachieving with a very small budget (Radz will be dribbling)

Poch/Valverde no chance. Not a viable alternative. Viable in that they won’t come here.
Not really read up on Tatty. Paul did a piece on him somewhere. Anyway it’s all redundant as I think they are all in on Marsch. Not suddenly going to pull some left field alternative out of the hat. If Marsch goes it’ll be with 12 or so games to go like last time

Re: Who do you hold responsible?
The board.
Through a simple lack of planning and proper investment in the philosophy that had been built up over the previous 3 years.
The board knew that last season was going to be Bielsa's last, yet the board showed a lack of planning in lining up a suitable replacement that would give continuity to the philosophy already in place.
Instead they appointed Marsch whose philosophy is practically the polar opposite to what we had in place. The only similarity is the press and to be honest that's not even working now as the players don't seem to be able to understand when to press and it all seems disjointed.
We are easily the worst team in the league and you only have to look at our bench to see the lack of quality due to poor investment.

The big point there is when you say the word overachieving. That for me is key. For 3 years Bielsa massively overachieved, for 6 months he struggled as the limitations of the squad was laid bare due to the key injuries. That's what I want from a manager, someone who can overachieve with what he has to work with, not demanding more and more players. JM hasn't overachieved, in fact I wouldn't even say he has achieved par overall and of late he is massively underachieivng.

"Football is about the people and the players,” he said. “Then there are those who will mingle in the middle: the coaches, executives and journalists. That last group represents the worst part about football" Marcelo Bielsa

But knowing Victor Orta as I do and knowing how he works (given I've read a lot about him) he won't see it the way you and others do.
Because his analytical tools will tell you that actually our position doesn't reflect the performance.
His tools will tell us we are bang on target based on performance and are actually suffering from largely individual player mistakes which Orta will theorise Marsch can't be blamed for.
Without a long boring explanation based on performance tools, we should be 13th.
That puts Marsch bang on target for the club expectations and will be why they aren't sacking him and I imagine how Orta will be justifying his continuing in the job to the board.
Analytics is a huge part of football now and is likely what is keeping Jesse in the job.
I like the look of Kjetil Knutsen incidentally.
Would have made a decent Bielsa replacement, much more similar..

Problem is CJay, without a proper striker it's all pointless in the end. I don't care for XG, but it shows we are creating chances and Harrison and Aaronson are both in the top ten for chances created. Every other fan base can see where our issue lies.Cjay wrote: ↑Mon Oct 24, 2022 6:02 pm Gonna upset some again with that dirty word "analysis".

Re: Who do you hold responsible?
Means nothing in real world terms I know, but it means a lot to people like Orta when trying to justify a manager.
Bit harder for him to justify if the board ask him why the players he signed are having such an impact on our actual position . . . . .

I know everyone will laugh at me saying this, but Potter finished 17th and 16th in his first two seasons at Brighton and everyone said the issue was a striker, as they were doing well on XG. But they were willing to give him a chance....

Just kidding. On that basis you have to gamble he can achieve the 17th or 16th. If you go back to those seasons I’d like to see exactly how they panned out and the fan reaction as it unfolded

Re: Who do you hold responsible?
My vote went to Jesse.
Simply really as we are massively underachieving with the squad at his disposal.
Take yesterday for example, Fulham were nothing special but they were better organised and had a game plan which worked. Whereas we run around like a bunch of U12's hoping to scramble a few goals by turnovers/transition rather than properly create them.
If we'd played the same system as Fulham 4-3-3 and matched them up the outcome would likely have been different. Also with Adams out injured it was the perfect opportunity to go like for like.
It's not just yesterday though, Marsche's system just doesn't work as shown by 6 wins from 23 matches.

IF, and it's a big if, 49ers buy us (
Their fans were willing to give him a chance, but some wanted him sacked as well, as they weren't winning enough.
