Where it all went wrong
So where did it all go wrong? Earning our place back in the PL through hardwork, after many years in the doldrums, only to screw it up through incompetence - typical Leeds.
For me, these are the main reasons:
- Obsession with re-sale value and trying to make a profit on players, rather than signing players who will keep us up and thus, bring more money to the club.
- Too many foreign players who don't care about Leeds and no local talent in the side. Where are the Kalvins, Milners, Cooks, Delphs?
- An egocentric owner who gave an interview to The Athletic at the start of the season, all about himself and bragging we wouldn't be in trouble. Just shows he learned absolutely nothing from last season.
- Style of play. We've tried to play too open, when we don't have the quality to do that. It all goes back to recruitment and wanting players who press and nothing else. For the first few seasons, we should've focused on trying to stay up before thinking of the style. Running before we could walk.
- No competition for Meslier for 3 seasons in the PL. You're only as good as your goalkeeper as the saying goes. Look at Forest for example, they have Keylor Navas as a back up. We only sign GKs to warm the bench not to compete.
- Not signing a striker or defender in the summer. The club was far too loyal to Bamford, which has cost us countless points this season. Defence has been poor for three seasons, but we only signed Woeber in January. Had he been in in July, I think we'd have 6 more points on the board.
Trying to avoid "recruitment", as an obvious answer, but these are my main thoughts. Feel free to add any I've missed.

Re: Where it all went wrong
It's mainly down to very poor recruitment imo ,defencively we have brought in Firpo,Rasmus,Llorente, Koch and we still leak goals at an alarming rate.Midfield,Roca ,Aaronson and McKennie below average players etc etc.Im not even going to mention Rutter !
We have spent a fortune over the last few seasons, the majority of which have been poor signings to say the least.

It's down to one very simple issue.
Money.
It is the single biggest factor in where a club ends up. You can get the odd outlier, Leeds under Bielsa, Brighton...but you can't keep beating the odds.

Can’t argue with the OP.
The club on the whole have handled the transition to the Premiership pretty poorly.
The chance to kick on after the first season was wasted and we have never recovered.
The club were fortunate last year in that we had Raphinha. This year no such luck.

Re: Where it all went wrong
Which side would you rather have:
GK Messlier, RB Ayling, LB Alioski, CB White, CB Cooper, DM Kalvin, CM Klich, CM Dallas, LW Harrison, RW Pablo, FW Bemford
or an 11 made up of our current squad. Key for me is the poor recuitment. The above was our championship side and really apart from one winger position we haven't really got stronger. We#ve had Raphinha and now Sinisterra or Gnonto (with Harrison switching). That for me is the only position we have got better.
So compared to our championship team we have a worse team and worse manager.
And if you think about it the nucleus of that championship side was jus a mid table championship side a certain manager improved them all overnight. I think 7 of that team were recruited undr previous boards.

Sacking Bielsa & getting Marsch in and consequently Gracia.
He studied and tracked Marsch for years supposedly.
That is the single biggest error.

Re: Where it all went wrong
Radz showing up last night says everything you need to know about him, last game he went to I think was Man City.
He's a total ego maniac and his delusion, arrogance, after we finished 9th in a totally unique season is a large reason of why we are here now.
He got cocky, enjoyed the limelight, that was the time to sell or push on, he did neither.
But the biggest issue is his DOF, Victor Orta Is one of the worst DOF ever.
I genuinely believe this is pound for pound one of the worst Premier league squads ever assembled.
It's lacking depth, it's lacking quality, it's lacking leaders, it's vastly overpriced.
Radz started the problems and Orta has built on them
His faith in Marsch which meant we signed players not suited to Premier league football for Marsch (Kristensen, Aaronson). His keeping of Marsch long past he should have (Marsch goes during World Cup we probably have a much better manager and aren't in this position).
His inability to implement a style through the age groups.
His inability to recognise that certain players don't suit Premier league (Roca, McKennie, Kristensen, can't cope with the speed of the game).
His insistence on putting his ego before the good of the club (Rutter).
His desperation to be able to brag about how he saved some fallen players career even when they aren't the right type of player (Firpo, Roca, Llorente).
His refusal to evolve the squad with good replacements (Forshaw coming on last night ffs, Bamford still being relied on, Ayling, Cooper) these players should be rarely seen now because we should have moved past them.
But that again adds into it, strange obsession with signing backups because he seems to think oue Championship winners are world beaters.
Failure to address glaring weaknesses in the squad year after year. No creativity 10 type signed, no depth in cm, no natural replacements for Firpo no natural goalscorer.
Appointing crap managers (Marsch Hecky) but then giving these managers squads that don't suit there style of play. Marsch plays narrow football, squad full of wingers very few central players. Bielsa relies on a striker who can run and press, sign Rodrigo who can do neither.
The whole thing is a s**t show and I firmly blame Radz for allowing Orta to do this
Boro fans weren't wrong, just took a bit longer for him to do it to us

What Cjay said. Whatever league we end up in, we need a reset from the boardroom down and a 5 - 10 year plan for where we want to be. Too much under this regime feels like a wing and a prayer, you cannot sustain a club in the Prem like that. And I think all our chickens have now come home to roost.

Re: Where it all went wrong
Yep, just about does it. I dunno where Leeds go from here but survival now comes down to Fulham & Leicester and given our record south of Watford Gap we probably ain't getting anything at Fulham so beating Leicester is absolutely a must win whilst hoping Wolves beat them this weekend. If those 2 results go our way then miraculously we have an excellent chance of staying up although the way I feel right now I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not as this club is going nowhere until the crap is replaced with players capable of consistency in this league and the 3 A-holes in attendance last night have done one.Cjay wrote:Radz showing up last night says everything you need to know about him, last game he went to I think was Man City.

Re: Where it all went wrong
Recruitment that has cost us as a squad & finiancally.
£40m - Augustin the worst signing ever
£40m - Llorente/James currently out on loan.
£37m - Rutter nowhere near ready for the PL, likely he never will be!
£27m - Rodrigo shone this season until his injury
£22m - Aaronson who spends more time horizontally than vertical on the pitch.
£17m - Costa - still on our books
£15m - Firpo - who's had one decent batch of games in the two seasons he's been at ER
£12m - Kristensen, no better than Ayling
£12m - Roca, a couple of decent games doesn't make a season.
And there are many more!
Orta a financial disaster.

For perspective
Bury
They went out of business
That is it all going wrong.
We aren't even in the relegation zone
I know that will change forum willing but we arent there yet

Yes, perspective. We nearly ended up out of business under Ridsdale and I for one do not want to see that happen again. We are between a rock and a hard place right now.
