The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Friday 11th August) New levels of incompetency as Gnonto move edges closer

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Friday 11th August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

New levels of incompetency as Gnonto move edges closer

Leeds fans have been left dumbfounded, after reports emerged yesterday afternoon, that Wilfred Gnonto has agreed a five year contract with the Toffee's; a claim which is backed up by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. According to Romano, Gnonto made himself unavailable for the Cup match midweek in an attempt to force Leeds hands. Everton believe they can secure his signature for £19m, and having witnessed Leeds transfer dealings thus far this Summer, who can blame them!

Only yesterday, Leeds lost their midfield dynamo Tyler Adams for a paltry £20m to a club who wouldn't think twice about splashing the cash, if they needed to do so. We've seen the likes of Southampton and Leicester City playing hard ball, and recouping over twice these amounts for players with much shorter terms.

In James Maddison's case, he only had 12 months left on his contract, but the Foxes were still able to command a £42m fee. Leeds are finding it difficult to recruit too. In the rare case they find a bargain, as in Max Aarons' case, Bournemouth came along, and plucked him from under Leeds' noses!

Gnonto is only a year into his five year contract, and one of only a few Leeds players not to have a relegation clause. He is a fully fledged Italian International and at 19, has the potential to become one of Europe's rising stars of the future. Gnonto may have only cost £3.8m, but we also need to remember his former club FC Zurich have a substantial sell on clause.

I'm sure Daniel Farke is not used to these levels of incompetency, and more or less said so during his press conference yesterday, stopping close to pointing the finger at those upstairs. How long can we expect him to stick around if things don't improve?

Elland Road bomb hoaxer spared jail

A man who made a hoax bomb threat, alleging he had planted an 'improvised explosive' in, or around the confines of the Elland Road Stadium, has been spared jail at Leeds Crown Court yesterday. Koli Boci, a local man from Hunslet, admitted visiting the club's Instagram account on Tuesday 4th April, stating “I have planted an improvised explosive.” This was followed-up moments later “Have fun guys.” Specialised officers then sprung into action, sealing off the area whilst a painstaking search took place.

Boci, who was 20 at the time, described the incident as a “drunken, misjudged attempt at humour”. He failed to see the funny side of it when, hours later armed officers broke his front door down, and arrested him. Among his belongings, was a copy of “The Anarchist Cookbook”, a book that includes instructions on bomb-making. Nevertheless, his defence counsel convinced the judge that his client was a man of 'impeccable character' and 'posed no danger to the public'. He was given a £10,000 fine, and a suspended nine month sentence, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work.

I’ll set myself up to be educated re this sort of thing but why is a player discussing a five year contract with another club (Everton ffs) when he is contracted to us for another 4 with no get out clause. I can tolerate it with the Adams situation as he had a built in clause but Gnonto should not be dictating to us and do we really need 20 million that badly. Make him sit & suffer.
What is the protocol on a player “making himself unavailable” if indeed that is what he actually did.
I suppose with Farke you can make yourself unavailable by simply showing a bad attitude in training. Is there a point where you’re in breach of contract in any way?

I agree. Willy is being badly advised, especially if Everton is his only option, they’ll be going down next season and I hope we wave as we pass them on our way up.

Morning all.
Another tosser about to leave the club, and for a pittance, take Zurichs slice of the cake and what do we have left, I expect we'll be getting paid in washers as well also in instalments no doubt !!
We are in the driving seat but because we don't want a petulant bitch on our books we let him go, just aint right, they flogged Gordon for around double that figure quoted yet once again we capitulate.
I'd let the little s**t rot at Leeds, f**k him and the rest.

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking but I’m not convinced that Leeds will let him go. Farke was emphatic yesterday in that excellent press conference that the club should be the ones deciding what happens to players in contract. He went on at the start that all players in contract will continue to play for the club.

Let’s see if the club will back him and rally to the flag he has planted on this issue, and tell Everton to take a hike and Gnonto to get back to work - for Leeds United.

The only thing I read in the press today about Gnonto was that we had told Everton that he is not for sale. Guess we will see tomorrow if he is in the squad.

This country has a serious issue with the “yoof” and whilst we continue to excuse it as it’s because they have nothing else to do it is not going to change. parenting is the main problem, a lot of kids are dragged up, have no boundaries and are left to run riot from 10 years old

Gnonto - Leeds should be playing hardball and ramping up the asking price. Not quite the same situation as with James Madison who has a proven track record, Gnonto is still a kid starting out but with incredible potential. They should be saying something like £30m...or lower the price with significant add-ons (appearances, goals, international call ups) and a sell-on %. He could be a superstar!

Alternatively...refuse to sell and then he plays for Leeds (at least until Jan). If he wants to play for Italy then it certainly won't help sitting on the bench.

That said, we don't know what is actually happening in the background. I'd prefer Leeds to do their business behind closed doors until everything is signed and sealed. This could be the case right now.

Would be nice if that is the case!

I've been speaking to a Zurich journalist on LinkedIn. This morning he has told me :-

Hi Matt, i don’t know the exact percentage of the sell out clause. But the president of FCZ said the sell on clause is extraordinary high.

I think we have to play hard ball over this, top dollar and Everton pay FC Zurich their cut. Do a Brighton and hold firm. Look at Caicado

Ironically that means they would be happier if Gnonto didn’t move now for relatively small money. That sell on clause only exists for his transfer from Leeds and no further, so they would prefer to wait and se him move for £70M to Man City after we’ve destroyed the Championship, Willy has 15 goals under his belt and more caps for Italy.

Maybe they could have a word in his ear! :duno:

…. Also, at that rate there is absolutely no incentive for Leeds to sell. We won’t get the funds we need to rebuild the squad so why bother. His wages must be manageable and we can just let him sit if he continues to sulk.

If there is no relegation get out clause in Gnonto’s contract and it appears that there isn’t, then we really do need to play hard ball on this one. If we sell to Everton for £19m and there is a 25%(?) sell on for Zurich then less his original transfer fee we come out less than a measly £10m on top. He has 4 years left on his contract with us so, unless Everton double their offer, he stays. If he refuses to play, then he is in breech of contract, if he plays but sulks, then stick him in the reserves. What is the point in having a player on a contract if he can just decide to go on a whim, when he pleases? Contracts are binding and are supposed to protect both parties.

“Koli Boci a local man” made me chuckle, it seems so incongruous - not these days though, I suppose.

OMG! Orta was some tool!

It is even more in their interest that he goes for big money so - they would not have expected to be cashing in on this Orta sized bonanza after one year.

If the report on Gnonto is true all it means is that his Agent and Everton have been conducting negotiations and are now using Gnontos request to be kept out of the Shrewsbury Squad to foment background noise . If Gnonto had played he would have been cup-tied so he can justify his actions as keeping his options open. The acid test comes on Saturday. Farke admitted that 90% of players look for Exit clauses so the question is are we happy to confine ourselves to the other 10% ? You criticise Leeds over exit clauses but then use comparisons based on players who arrived at their clubs under completely different circumstances. You are comparing apples and oranges and taking no account of the fact that the majority of those clauses were negotiated after our narrow escape against Brentford or after we had just arrived in the Premiership. If you have experience of negotiating any kind of contract you will know that the relative negotiating strength of the parties dictate what you end up with no matter what your negotiating skills are .

Remember that well but it was a totally different time and era Leeds were one of the best sides around they wasn't the money in the game there is now
madeley was a Leeds lad loyalty meant something in them days he played at Leeds all his career and was a top player who could play in virtually any position

The game nowadays is all about money and self progression madelley would be worth a fortune in today's market as would nearly all the revie side the game as changed drastically since them days and not for the better in my opinion
