The Blue Card
Ifab ( International Football Association Board ) is to trial issuing Blue cards during games. Players showing dissent or committing cynical fouls will be shown the Blue card and sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes.
Is this a good idea or another useless rule complicating the game even more ??

Re: The Blue Card
A good idea in principle if it helps to cut out cynicism but this is football so you know it’ll be a right c**k up.

Re: The Blue Card
It should be used for dissent only in my opinion and even then only for foul and abusive language. A cynical foul should always be a yellow.
The problem is, you could end up with several players in the sin bin at the same time and there would be confusion about who comes back on when. Plus it will create more additional added on time as players leave the field when being sin binned.

Sin binning a goalkeeper for wasting time would be fun

Good idea there has been making red card that should never have been. If they do it like rugby. Where they are sin binned and have the time to review it properly and if deemed a red then so it should be, but if after having review ot and deemed not so malicious then all good. Can only be good for the game

Personally I think the FA should work the kinks out of VAR and the handball rule before adding another complicated and opinion based rule. It has the potential to be open to (mis)interpretation
I agree re the time wasted thing but in this day and age we should be able to keep a clock on every player in the sin bin and an official to keep check..

Excellent idea, and well overdue.

Re: The Blue Card
For me they need to have a video camera on the ref, like the ones Police Officers have. That way you have the record of exactly what was said by the player because as you suggest different people would define foul and abusive language differently. You could still have the blue card but it would enable the refs to be monitored so that you can then get a more standardised view of what is foul and abusive - i.e. some refs could be told they were being too harsh and others could be told they were being too lenient. So after a season or two you get it so all refs are blue carding for similar language. The difficulty though comes if a foreign player says something that the refereee doesn't understand so there are going to be a lot of grey areas - in .rugby there are less languages as it isn't played by as many countries but we saw recently with the match between England and South Africe where the South African was accused of calling the English player a '.White c*nt' (or som.ething along those lines) but then was let off after he told them he had said something in Affricaan .(apologies for the spelling) which sounded like it..The Subhuman wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 9:17 am Define foul and abusive language ...

Being booked for tim.e wasting seems so pointless - instead they need to follow rugby's example and have a stadium clock and pause it when a player is wastng time. They were supposedly doing similar at the start of the season and adding on time when players were wasting it etc which led to excessive amounts of injury time but that seems to have stopped now for no apparent reason.

Re: The Blue Card
In rugby a yellow is a sin bin offence. Why have blue. All yellows go to the bin. Sometimes if serious enough it is escalated to red.
Far too complicated. As has been said already football can’t even implement VAR properly or agree on handball. 3 cards is really not going to work. It’ll be chaos.

Re: The Blue Card
You can listen to the ref in rugby. It’s far more open about decision making. But also rugby is historically far more respectful of refs. In football at a lower level refs have been beaten to a pulp. In top level games they hardly set a good example by continually hounding the ref. In rugby you are walking for that.weasel wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 9:48 am For me they need to have a video camera on the ref, like the ones Police Officers have. Re: The Blue Card
Body cams are a great idea, Weasel (and probably funny as hell). Also, the practice of "norming" is something we use on this side of the pond to make sure everyone is on the same page. For example, to make sure professors, instructors , adjuncts, etc. are all grading an "A" essay as an "A," a "B" essay as a "B," etc. Seems like a no-brainer if they end of implementing the blue card and sin bin.weasel wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 9:48 am For me they need to have a video camera on the ref, like the ones Police Officers have. Re: The Blue Card
If you make this change, which seems like it has hundreds ways to be cocked up, transparency seems like a must. I know an increased level of transparency was supposed to be at the top of the list with the appointment of Howard Webb as chief.Jaydog wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 10:13 am You can listen to the ref in rugby. I can see it now--Pickford, in a classic Pickford pose, prostrate in front of the goal and tased in the ass. That'd get him up and movin'

Re: The Blue Card
I like the idea in principle, although it will add minutes on to the game as players, managers, and of course VAR scrutinise every contentious decison by the officials.
