It was a welcome result and Amps and Rodon deserve all the plaudits. Gnonto played well and there were nice pieces of play by others who I thought were generally a mixed bag.
There is no doubt DF knows what it takes to get out of this league and he has made the signings necessary to do so, Kamara, Gruev are two classic examples. I have doubts they are going to be good enough in the prem. Although as it is Gruev’s first season in English football there may be adjustment factors to consider.
For me - Bannon was the best central midfield player on the pitch during that game. He is nearly 40 and 2ft 3 inches. This is not taking anything away from the Wendies they were at home and in a dogfight to stay up, so their willingness to battle came as no surprise.
When the game was frenetic the lack of composure by Kamara and Gruev on the ball was very evident. Ampadu led the way in terms of composure at the back. Firpo pretty much hoofed it anywhere under the slightest pressure during that first half. His cross for the goal was excellent. It was clearly worth about 5 points on a half time scorecard.
However, when we started to get on top you saw players come out of their shell and start to play. To be premiership level you need to be brave enough to have some composure when things are not going so well. This is why we struggled first half - too many players treated the ball like a ticking bomb. Teams get punished severely for that kind football in the Prem and chase shadows for 90 minutes.
The test for Farke if we go up is whether he can pick a Prem level signing with the same adeptness he has in identifying the necessary quality needed to challenge for promotion. Ampadu is one signing he has been spot on about. Rodon will be another if all the pieces fall into place.
Good post DDB
It's so far been proven that Farke is an excellent appointment, who can drive the club forward at the playing level.
There are still doubts about his credentials at EPL level, but our focus this season had to be purely getting promotion and we're right on track.
I'm sure that Farke has learned from his two previous promotions with Norwich. I don't know what happened with Norwich in terms of recruitment when they got to the EPL, but I'll guess that he wouldn't be afforded the budget Leeds will give him.
Should we get promoted there is a heck of a lot of work to do in the summer. All the players that we loaned out need cleared out permanently. We have quite a number of players in our first team squad who are not good enough for the Prem and will also need to be jettisoned. The signs from Farke are that he has no problems with doing what needs to be done for our progression, and that he's been given a lot of freedom to do his job.
He's recruited well at this level and succeeded. From his past experience at EPL level I'm sure he has a much better idea of what's required to progress, and we as a club and fanbase should also have wised up from our jaunt in the EPL.
All signs point to us being in very good hands with Daniel. He arrived when our club was in complete disarray, and was mentally scarred from two seasons of chastening beatings and mistakes. But he's pulled things around in minus time and made us into a spirited, united and determined competitor. So, I really don't think that we could be in better hands when it comes to transitioning the club to the next level.
But as you say, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.
