Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 11th March) - Leeds United's destiny in their own hands now

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 11th March, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road....

Leeds United's destiny in their own hands now

Leeds moved one step closer to the top flight after seeing off a battling Sheffield Wednesday side at Hillsborough on Friday evening. There was little to choose between the two sides in the opening half. As in recent performances, Leeds unsurprisingly looked a little leggy; but we're at the business end of the season now, and the finishing line is in full view. With just nine games left, it doesn't matter how you get over the line, as long as you do.

Patrick Bamford upset the buoyant home support by putting the Whites ahead on the stroke of half time after an exquisite cross to the back post by Junior Firpo. Up until that point, both sides had chances to go ahead. Meslier had to be at his best to deny Musaba from point blank range early on following a corner, whilst at the other end, Beadle had to come charging out to the edge of his area to thwart Georginio Rutter one on one. The Frenchman picked up the rebound, but his effort was cleared off the line.

As time wore on, the visitors started to ask more questions of the Wendies defence, and it wasn't long until they doubled their lead. Rutter sliced Sheffield Wednesday's defence wide open , releasing Gnonto wide right of the penalty area. The young Italian took a touch, before drilling the ball diagonally, past the despairing dive of Beadle. Even then Danny Rohl's side continued to ask questions of the Leeds defence. They must have thought they pulled one back when Meslier spilled Musabi's effort straight to the feet of Bannan, but Ampadu was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Form guide doesn't lie

Leeds form since the start of the year has been nothing short of sublime, and with just nine games left, destiny is well and truly in their own hands. It's not until you look at the form guide over the last twelve games, that you see the magnitude of what Leeds have achieved. 34 points out of a possible 36 points and just three goals conceded.

The feat is even more impressive when you consider Leeds have achieved this without Captain Pascal Struijk, who has been out of action since Boxing Day. Leeds have nine days to regroup, recover and restore their energy levels, before welcoming Millwall to Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

McKenna not thinking about a promotion race

Following their 2-1 loss to Cardiff City, Ipswich Manager Kieran McKenna has insisted that he is not thinking about a promotion race (of course he isn't). The former Northern Ireland International, turned magician for what he has achieved at Portman Road will focus his attention on Ipswich's final nine games one by one.

Who knows? We’re not thinking about a promotion race, to be honest. Just thinking about ourselves, our journey, the next game, do as well as we can. Bits of the performance we could have improved. It was a strong second half. Whether we won today, drew today or unfortunately lost today, it wouldn’t change anything that we focus on or work on next week

Morning.
It's in our hands but don't.be surprised if we have a wobble or two, just like the rest.

That form guide is insane especially as it barely gives us second place.

Mckennba...Aye right, at 1-0 on Sat hus team sat joint top. It has to be on his mind and rightly so. He is just trying to protect his players.

Form is great but I will take quality everytime and fortunately we have plenty of that (for this league).
One game at a time is a very overly used phrase, however it is the correct approach, DF has said this from day one, don't get too high after a win and don't get too low after a defeat, concentrate on the next game.
A little nervous about Millwall on Sunday if I am being honest, away teams cup final again...
Come on LEEDS

Morning all.
Another great away victory on Friday, although I don't remember too much about it, we had friends from darn sarf come up (spurs) and had a good weekend starting Friday afternoon.
We battled hard at Sheffield, got lucky, but thats what Meslier is there for, he stops the ball going in if he can, he did his job very well, gave the defence confidence and it spread throughout the team.
In the end I thought we were worthy winners, that mini table is a great example of what we've achieved, only Norwich & Ipswich have lost 2 games but look at the goal difference, we are streets ahead.
Still a long way to go, and we've seen in the past what can happen around easter time, this has always been my concern, Hull are doing great but concede as many as they score, Watford are well, Watford and anything could happen, good job we have the well seasoned DF and his backroom staff to keep the ship on course.
Lets beat Millwall first and literally take it one game at a time.
We keep winning and it will cause all sorts of problems for the teams around us, Leicester must be the nervous ones out of the top 4, their lead looked un-catchable at one point.

Goals and assists over 90 mins for Patrick Bamford according to season.

It looks like he is having his second best season ever... Shocking!!!

Piroe 11 goals & 2 assist in the 29 games he has played 55 minutes or more.

Bamford 8 goals & 1 assist in 11 games since January.

Didn’t realise it was xG tbh, I just saw goals and assist per 90. XG is a meaningless stat

Of course XG is a meaningless stat and it becomes more meaningless the more it diverges from your own personal views😇😅🤣

No doubt there'll be summert wrong with those charts, and one will be scouring the net trying to find it.

Perhaps the colour of them ?

Hearing historic point totals, if this were 2012-13, we have enough points to be promoted already

Exactly, it always baffled me that, with questions like 'what you planning' or the like..

"we're planning to win the next feckin game ya clown, do you think we're planning to lose or draw it?"

Would be my short shrift.

Or perhaps we recognise that according to those very charts Piroe has done better than Bamford in his best season playing for 10th placed Swansea in this league than Paddy did in teams that finished 3rd, 1st and is 0.1 behind his best ever total in a side currently 2nd?

And even more impressively in that season Piroe xG was 11.9 meaning he scored nearly twice as many times as he should which exceeding xG is something Paddy has never done never mind nearly doubled it.

Not sure why trying to talk JP down and Paddy up for point scoring on other forum member is a thing for some but hey ho.

It’s a good point. Most people who follow stats religiously always use or ignore depending on their agenda. Very few people completely understand XG so calling it useless is daft tbh.

And hey ho for trying to talk DF down at every opportunity coz you admittedly 'never wanted him in the first place' !

And it's Cheltenham week, so let's go 'tally ho' instead !!

Must dash.
