Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 26th August) - Leeds secure first victory of the season at Hillsborough

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 26th August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Victory at Hillsborough

Goals from Brenden Aaronson and Dan James brought some much-needed positivity to the Elland Road faithful, (and their 3800 jubilant travelling fans), as Leeds recorded their first win of the season.

Back-to-back draws coupled with the departure of key personnel, have left large sections of Whites fans subdued and more than a little apprehensive about the season ahead. For the most part, Leeds looked well organised, difficult to break down, and lethal on the break. The cogs were finally turning in unison. It will be interesting to see how they get on against more difficult opposition.

Despite their strong start to their campaign (with a 4-0 win over Plymouth), Wednesday's lack of quality soon showed. They were over-reliant on their wing-backs, and an aging Barry Bannan to provide the goods, lacking any kind of bite. Danny Röhl's side have been widely tipped to do well this season; they'll need to improve ten-fold, if they are to avoid a relegation dog fight!

Leeds can't afford to stool on Chair bid

Leeds are plotting the capture of QPR's highly rated playmaker Ilias Chair, as the replacement for Georginio Rutter. The Hoops will be desperate to keep hold of their star player. He has been a part of the furniture at Loftus Road since 2017, when he signed from Belgium outfit Lierse (for a nominal fee of £50,000). He is quickly closing in on 250 appearances for the West London side and has netted 34 times. His creativity

Leeds won't take QPR's objections sitting down! They have identified the 26yo Moroccan International as a direct replacement for Georginio Rutter who joined Brighton earlier this month. Leeds can't afford to stool. Marti Cifuentes will want time to find a replacement, but sofa Leeds are yet to make an offer.

Earlier this year, Ilias and his brother Jaber, were convicted of assaulting a truck driver with a rock, breaking his skull and leaving him unconscious. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison with a further 12 months suspended. Last month he successfully had his jail term reduced to 150 hours of community service and a fine of £1,345.

Wober on the move?

Borussia Monchengladbach are in talks with Leeds about bringing Max Wober back to Borussia-Park before the end of the Summer transfer window. The Austrian International showcased his quality, whilst on loan with the Bundesliga outfit last season, becoming one of the first names on their team sheet. Although he played a significant part, they are unwilling or unable to table a bid that comes close to Leeds expectations.

The 49ers want to clear £10m if they are to let Wober leave the club, which does not seem a lot for a player of his pedigree. Having seen the way Leeds Utd operate, Gladbach are taking the begging bowl approach. If this does not work, their next enquiry will be a season-long loan with an option to buy (let's hope Leeds at least insert a compulsory purchase at a decent price, even if it means the Germans have to stagger payments over several years.

Morning all
A good win on the road on Friday, SW were rubbish like, but taking nothing away from united although it ought to have been by a bigger margin.
All the first 11 played well, too many punches instead of catches from meslier, firpo and bogle both getting caught out of position but others covered well for them.
A big big input from the likes of Aaronsen, Gnonto, James and the impressive work of Joseph, Struijk colossal again and Gruev putting in a better shift, Amps and Rodon as steady as ever.
Hopefully like last season after an unsteady start thing finally click into place.
It's the state of the bench which is a massive concern, and rightly so, a couple more additions, hopefully the kid from spurs will be coming and we ought to be on the right tracks.

Yes a good well needed win. We need at least 3/4 more players if you look at the bench on Friday night

I suppose it would be too much to expect some acknowledgement that an awful lot of the ballyhoo of the past 10 days has been confected noise on the back of overreaction hyped up by clickbait junkies. The reality always was that the bulk of incomings for a club like Leeds will be loaded towards the end of the window because we are shopping for a different level of quality than most of the competition . Does anybody seriously expect that we would be able to compete for a player like Solomons without a huge amount of background work and there will be more evidence of that over the next few days as the pieces fall into place. Wednesday weren't great but you still have to beat what's in front of you and that's why the WBA performance and the defensive solidity aspect of it were so important. Given that I would be reluctant to let Wober go as once the window is closed he can get his head sorted and play a role . It makes no sense to let him go on loan unless a) There's a quality replacement lined up and b) there's an obligation to buy.

Worst thing about the game for me was pointless substitutions again, can't get my head round it at all, imagine if they scored late on and all the equilibrium and shape had gone from our team !

Refreshing to get a win and have a positive outlook on things for the first time in awhile. 3 or 4 signings before the window closes and a win against Hull and the season is back on track.

The Sallai links seem to have gone very quiet unfortunately as I think he'd have been a cracking signing

Seems our current recruitment team are happy to play things cool and not be panicked into paying over the odds for any player. Rodon's signing being a good example of how we were quoted (allegedly) circa £20M but eventually he signed for half of that. Mutterings from the Blades camp of how we low balled them for Bogle as well.

My other thoughts are do we want young players like Crew, Chambers & Debayo to get any game time this season ? One for Farke to work out obviously but no point blocking their pathway if the plan is to introduce them slowly over the course of the season.

Farke seems to be damned if he does and damned if he doesn't in regards to making substitutions. Worth noting that I think we only dropped points once last season after going in front. This suggests that he makes the right subs when we are in front and is not something that should just be taken for granted.

Against Sheff Wed there were probably only 3 or 4 sensible substitutions to be made and none really for tactical purposes. Giving Piroe, Rothwell and Gelhardt a few minutes to keep them involved and at a push Byram too. If Joseph had have got a goal I think Piroe would have been brought on sooner. As it was I think Farke kept Joseph on a bit longer than he would have done because he wanted Joseph to get a goal. As regards the other subs likely just a case of injury precaution but not done too early so as to not disrupt our control of the game. You risk having unhappy players if they sit on the bench for the full 90 minutes but for me I think Farke got them about right and most importantly we got the result right.

This isn't sunday league that your'e used to, it's professional football, I appreciate they all want to lake, but in the real world, it just dosen't happen like that, a 37 second cameo for gelhardt is really gonna keep his fitness levels up.
Putting 5 subs on for the sake of it is poor management, to disript the game flow fair enough, to disrupt it and we lose our shape, again is poor management, putting 5 subs on all at once is shocking management.

With regards to the 5 subs made at the same time against Boro it just shows we were taking it about as seriously as a pre season friendly that's all.

The fall out from that defeat was totally OTT and fans should really know better after all the recent cup shock defeats we've endured no matter who was the manager/coach.

I ain't bothered about losing early in that tin pot cup thats geared up for PL teams to lake 3 games and win it, it's the way we went about it without and fight or style of play.
I've never ever seen a manager in football make 5 subs in one go, if you think that's acceptable then that's your choice, I don't.

Except even Farke said he got it wrong and has said in the past the cup games are important to him. Last seasons league cup first round we put out a strong team

I would have agreed with you if he made the subs around 70 minutes and risked the flow of the game and us losing the control we had. As it was he made his first change after 84 minutes, Piroe for Joseph. Hardly likely to cause too much disruption and gave Piroe a few minutes to maybe get a goal and a confidence lift. 1 more change happened after 88 minutes and for me the game was as near to done and dusted as it can be at that point. Rothwell came on for Gnonto and for me it is just a case of giving Gnonto a well earned rest and perhaps more importantly eliminating the risk of him getting an injury. The final 2 changes came after 92 minutes which meant there were just 2 minutes left. If Sheff Wed were to get 2 goals in those 2 minutes then we have big problems. Again just gave James and Aaronsen a little breather and also nice as they, especially Aaronsen, could get a round of applause from our fans.

So not a mass influx of subs, ala the Boro match, not a real risk of upsetting our tempo by making them early.

Just some bizarre way for you to slate Farke. Even Cjay masquerading as a snake wouldn't stoop so low.

Last season we had a strong bench, this year, atm, it's the opposite. Piroe is really the only player you can bring on while Paddy is injured.

You should never break up a defence at any time unless yellow card management (and even then) or injury. Can't recall who got booked v SW. Any sub after 85 M is a time wasting exercise or full blown panic
