Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 20th February) - What could 49ers interest in Rangers mean for Leeds?

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 20th February, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

What could 49ers interest in Rangers mean for Leeds?

Leeds Chairman Paraag Marathe is spearheading a bid by 49ers Enterprises to acquire Scottish giants Rangers. The potential takeover, fueled by American investment, has been the subject of intense speculation, with Marathe, a key figure in the 49ers organization, leading the charge.

Reports suggest that detailed discussions have been held between Marathe and Rangers in recent months, facilitated by John Halsted, an existing American board member at the club. While a Rangers spokesperson has refrained from commenting on the specifics, stating that it is not club policy to address such speculation, the rumors persist.

Marathe's background is particularly interesting. The son of Indian immigrants, he worked his way up from the family pizza business to become a prominent figure in the San Francisco 49ers organization over a 24-year period. His business acumen and experience are undoubtedly factors driving the interest in Rangers.

With Leeds United on the cusp of Premier League promotion, the timing of the Rangers takeover is intriguing. Does this signal a broadening of their football portfolio, or might they be considering cashing in on their Leeds United investment? Leeds won't be short of potential buyers, with Red Bull being a leading contender given their established presence at Elland Road.

The season defining cameo appearance

Since joining on loan last summer, Joe Rothwell has quickly evolved from a questioned addition to an integral piece of the Leeds Utd jigsaw. While initial fan reactions were mixed, his dedication and skill have silenced any doubters. His influence on the pitch has grown consistently, culminating in a season-defining performance against Sunderland, which will be firmly etched in the memories of Leeds fans for years to come.

His impact extends beyond mere statistics. Farke himself recognizes the unique talent he possesses. "Joe is a pure baller", "With a ball, (he is) one of the best players in this country. If you enjoy football, you enjoy watching Joe Rothwell playing football because what he does, especially with his right foot — in terms of passing, in terms of his technique, in terms of his tidy touches — is outstanding.”

With just seconds remaining, Rothwell demonstrated exceptional footballing intelligence, technical skill and calmness under pressure. Instead of instinctively using his preferred right foot, he calmly switched the ball to his left completely outmaneuvering le Fee in the process. This clever shift generated a vital yard of space, 91 cm that could be the difference between Championship and top flight football next season.

He had only been on the pitch for several minutes, when he set up Leeds equaliser fifteen minutes earlier. He unleashed a left-footed curler, an inch-perfect cross that landed perfectly for Pascal Struijk to finish from close range. It was a display of precision, skill and vision that had been missing that evening; the final ingredients that made the tie a classic!

His contract expires on May 31st, at which time he becomes a free agent. Many will argue that he has earnt himself an Elland Road contract next season, but do Leeds need to be setting the bar higher? As Whites fans up and down the Country will tell you, nobody does a meltdown like Leeds Utd, but after Monday's win, the finishing line is finally in sight.

Morning.

Too early to be talking contracts with anyone methinks.

That pass by Rama to feed Rothwell the recycled ball will live long in the memory.

Re Rangers and the 49ers. Good news for the blue side of Scotland but nowt to do with us.

49ers will flip us when there is profit there, and that isn't now, or soon I believe.

Morning all.
If the 49ers sell up surely a bigger and better alternative is only around the corner, if it's red bull and they don't over-do things like at other clubs then so be it, let's see what happens before going all around the rumour mills.

I've championed Rothwell since his first game at Harrogate pre season, a very accomplished player, certainly for this league, much better than Gruev going forward, and almost everytime puts his crosses into the danger area, I'm not getting over giddy about his performance on Monday, I knew it was there already.
Do I think we should sign him permanently or go for better next season...hell yea, go for better everytime, if we get promotion I want to see much better players able to keep us up in the greed is good league, like many others, I suspect JR would be out of his depth.

BTW, I have some colourful bruising coming out since Mondays carnage in the stands, 3 days later I'm struggling a bit, yesterday I thought I'd whiplash with terrible pains in my neck, back &legs, my old wounds I am used to, but this feels like I've been knocked over.

I've also had a high opinion of Rothwell this season. I think he has been very unlucky to have lost his starting position.
I suppose we have to admit that DF has got it right though, since we are playing well and winning our games.

Totally agree, Mental.

The only midfielder to drive us forward out of the choices of Tanaka, Gruev & himself. His run into Sunderland's box to get him in a good position for the cross was very clever!

We've actually scored from set-pieces this season, I wonder why?

Rothwell was unlucky to lose his place in the First XI, although I can understand Farke's reasons for changing the line-up in certain games of late.

Rothwell has done well this season, most of the time when he has played. He isnt one of those nailed on starters and some of his games have been poor, by his standards. But thats what makes this season so much better than the last one. We now have a good squad of players to call upon. We are not relying on 1 or 2 individuals to win games for us.
Rothwell is the type of player who is ideal for certain games, and maybe not so good for other games. Farke has used this squad very well this season, and we have benefited from that as we are going well and top of the league.

It seems the little break has sharpened Rothwell up and Farke will probably put him back in the starting eleven at some point in the near future. As you say Farke has got things right this season and long may that continue.

Well put GW
DF is using all the squad now, sometimes a "horses for courses" scenario which I've mentioned before, I also notice DF has taken the handbrake off in many home games, allowing players off the leash and going for goals.

Was there a handbrake at home earlier in the season ?

Not too sure about that as we've been excellent at ER for nearly 2 full seasons under Farke.

There was and we're also more progressive away from home last 4/5 games .... Much better use of the bench too this season.

It's an either/or scenario in midfield. It should be one of Aaronson/Tanaka or Rothwell alongside Amps

I reckon so Jammy, we don't do as many passes at the back now, rotating the ball a lot quicker, plus many more balls over the top from Struijk, Ampadu, Rothwell and Tanaka for the forwards to run onto, just my observations.

My own personal view is that having a settled front 4 has lead to better all round team play and hence it looks better because it is better.

Or perhaps I'm wrong and Farke decided to reapply the mythical handbrake for Harrogate and Millwall in the FA Cup :)

Agree on those points but for me it's down to the team now functioning better as a unit rather than Farke having a change of tactics or allowing more forward passes.

I have no clue what the rumoured move for Rangers by the Niners would mean for us....

To me it would confirm we are just a commodity to the 49ers rather than something special and unique.
