Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 13th March) Leeds roar back to the top of the Championship

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 13th March, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds roar back to the top of the Championship

Leeds United roared back to the top of the Championship in style last night with a performance so dominant, you’d think the Lions had mistaken Elland Road for the Serengeti! Farke’s squad came out firing on all cylinders, pressing harder than Rupert Murdoch at a news conference, leaving Alex Neil’s side dazed, confused and fresh out of ideas.

The Whites were gifted an early lead in the third minute. A dangerous cut-back from Manor Solomon was unfortunately deflected by Millwall defender Jake Cooper, sending the ball past his own goalkeeper Lukas Jensen and into the net. The own goal set the tone for a dominant Leeds performance, as they controlled possession and kept the visitors penned in their on half for much of the game.

Brenden Aaronson then forced a save from Jensen and Ao Tanaka fired a long-range effort narrowly wide. Joel Piroe thought he had doubled the advantage with a powerful strike, but celebrations were cut short by the offside flag, ruling out Aaronson’s preceding assist. Millwall, despite going behind, remained resilient and almost snatched an equalizer before halftime when Cooper, seeking redemption for his earlier misfortune, headed a free header wide of the target.

The second half saw Leeds continue to probe, seeking to extend their lead and secure the three points. Solomon came agonisingly close to adding a second, unleashing a thunderous shot that rattled the crossbar. Millwall, while diligently defending, struggled to mount a sustained threat on the Leeds goal. Their best effort came in the form of a heavily deflected cross that tested Illan Meslier, but ultimately posed little danger.

The crucial second goal finally arrived in the 85th minute, putting the result beyond doubt. Tanaka capped off an impressive individual performance with a well-taken first-time finish from the edge of the box, marking only Leeds' second shot on target in the game. The goal sparked jubilant scenes at Elland Road, confirming Leeds' return to the top of the Championship table.

This victory not only re-establishes Leeds’ two-point lead over Sheffield United but also extends their cushion to four points over third-placed Burnley in the fiercely contested battle for automatic promotion. Having avenged their previous two defeats to Millwall this season, Leeds demonstrated their resilience and determination to stay on course for a coveted Premier League return, making it 16 Championship games unbeaten at fortress Elland Road.

Farke incensed after Piroe goal chalked off

Daniel Farke was left incensed after Joel Piroe's goal was chalked off in their hard-fought 2-0 victory over Millwall last night. While the Whites ultimately secured the three points and returned to the top of the Championship table, the disallowed goal cast a shadow over the win and ignited Farke’s fury.

JP thought he had broken his three game duck with a moment of brilliance. After a slick one-two with Brenden Aaronson, the Dutchman expertly navigated the Millwall defence and slotted home, his relief and elation evident in his celebration. However, his joy was abruptly cut short by the sight of the linesman’s flag, signaling offside.

Farke was apoplectic on the touchline. His anger wasn’t simply about the single decision; it was compounded by the hauntingly familiar feeling of injustice. As he later revealed, this was the same linesman who had previously denied Willy Gnonto a late equalizer against Coventry City under similarly contentious circumstances just a month prior.

I think the offside goal in the first-half was never, never offside! Farke exclaimed, his voice thick with frustration. And you know what? The same linesman, incredulous. Recalling the Coventry incident, Farke continued, [He gave us an] apology after the game. ‘Won’t happen again’. Next game we play, same again.

Farke stressed the gravity of such decisions, especially within the tight confines of a Championship clash. “It kills me a little bit because a goal is so important against a side like Millwall. Anything can happen [when the scoreline is still 1-0].” He felt the disallowed goal could have significantly altered the game’s dynamic, potentially making Leeds’ path to victory smoother.

Despite dominating possession and peppering the Millwall goal with 18 shots compared to their opponent’s four, Leeds were ultimately reliant on an own goal and a late Ao Tanaka thunderbolt to seal the win. The disallowed Piroe goal added an unnecessary layer of tension and frustration to a game they otherwise controlled.

Hull keen to make Joffy move permanent

Joe Gelhardt is starting to show Elland Road what they're missing. The 22-year-old striker, on loan at Hull City since January, bagged his third goal of the season last night, helping the Tigers secure a 2-1 comeback victory against Oxford United at the MKM Stadium. Since arriving at Hull, "Joffy" has been a consistent presence, starting all but one game and earning a solid 6.90 average rating, placing him second within Ruben Selles' squad. This is a far cry from his time at Leeds, where he was seemingly frozen out and opportunities were scarce.

Many believe Gelhardt should have been loaned out much sooner, and his current form is vindication. Hull City fans are already vocal about wanting to make his move permanent in the summer. With just over two years left on his Leeds contract, a summer transfer seems likely. It begs the question: have Leeds United made a mistake letting Gelhardt stagnate on the bench? His resurgence at Hull suggests a player with untapped potential. Only time will tell if letting him go will backfire on the Elland Road hierarchy.

Well I don't know about "roaring back". It was a dominant performance over Millwall but also one that was at times disjointed and stuttering. We never bothered their keeper very much and there were many misplaced passes and bits of play that broke down. We got the job done is the main thing and yes reclaimed top spot.

All in all it is very tight between the top three and nothing at all is a given. We still have a hell of a scrap on our hands.

The Officials in this match, the Referee and the Assistant Referee were utter crap in this match. What the Ref was on or whether he'd forgotten his glasses is the question. Absolute amateur the guy in black and the correct answer is that he is just bloody useless. Candidate for Twat of the Week for me

Morning all
Another win, 3 points , clean sheet and top of the league.
It was never going to be pretty against millwall, but it was certainly dominant, but as usual, until you get a second goal yoi know you are a freak goal, set piece away from it all falling to bits, that so called "offside" was right in front of me, nt just saying it but I honestly thought he was onside, the linesman raised his flag straight away so I didn't celebrate to goal but haven't seen it back yet.
Otherwise just a matter of time for our second and what a cracker from Tanaka.
Massive difference in game tempo from Rothwell starting as apposesd to boring boring Gruev, thankfullt farke saw it as well, also no need for silly 70th minute subs in this game, it could, as has happened before, upset the whole rythym of the game so he left it well late, maybe he knows what he's doing after all !!
Lets finsh off before the Int break with 3 points on Saturday.

I still don't understand why Jake Cooper is being credited with the own goal. Yes, he touched it but it was just going to go harmlessly across the area until the keeper stuck out an arm and knocked it in. Not that I care though, just seems strange.

The first half last night was horrible. Niggly, both teams constantly giving up possession due to sloppy passes, no flow to the game.
Second half was completely different. Total dominance, the second goal was justification for how much better we played.
Such a shame the Piroe goal was chalked off, it would have been one of the goals of the season.

Brenden so happy to not be picked for team USA celibrates with girlfriend. He promises time for a well earned rest and time to chill
out and relax and return invigorated after the international break, and work hard for promotion. Relex don't do it.

I thought we looked a bit nervy in the first half which caused a lot of sloppy play which invited Millwall onto us but luckily they had very little to offer in attack unless they had time for Cooper to lumber up the field and get his head to the ball. In the second half we were much better but still found it hard to craft clearcut chances . The Piroe GOAL was clearly onside and I feel that disallowing it discouraged similar type play . The Referee failed to do anything about persistent fouling and what seemed to be the clear targeting of James for roughing up . Solomon and Aaronson both looked far sharper than recent games so that bodes well for the run in particularly with the international break coming up. Rothwell played well but he still has that penchant for that odd Rodonesque pass straight to the opposition plus I think Farke is right when he says that his minutes need to be managed .Most of us think that DF knows exactly what he is doing and the record for fastest ever to 50 League wins pretty much proves it particularly when you consider the context in which he took over in the summer of 23.

Think Farke may have been angry about not going two up earlier as he knew we weren't playing well and Millwall did look dangerous in our box from dead balls, them scoring from one was not out of the question. Amazingly poor decision from the linesman who would have needed xray vision to see past the defender.

Leeds Utd took more supporters to watch the U21s at Aldershot Tuesday night for the national league cup game than millwall brought to ER for a championship game

My "home" club... season ticket holder from 69-80, watched the game live on LUTV and good to see the ground again. it looked like the East bank was closed so that's 4000 less bodies than it could have been. You obviously know Aldershot was and maybe still is a very transient town being home of the British army back then so attendances were never great most weeks. A lot of local Leeds fans would likely have turned up to see the first ever visit by a Leeds team

I remember a period of not scoring for about 13 games at the Rec.

We won by the way to become the last standing U21 team left in the club. Keeper error put them one up at HT before a dominant second half ... Pickles and two from an excellent Chadwick gave us the win. Highlights in the usual place

Morning all.

Nice to be able to look at the table again.

Three points is all that matters.
Apparently we are safely in the playoffs now. .

I recall Joffy was personally contacted by Bielsa to convince him to come to Leeds.

Unfortunately he never found his groove here, I think he plays better with a traditional No9 and the closest he has cone to that is Bamford who is now out of the picture.

He wasn't a good fit for Marsch, or Xavi and when we signed Rutter and Piroe the next season I felt Joffy was always going to be behind them as well. Then Aaronson came back.
Him and Joseph would be a possible combo but that won't happen.

If he goes and gets a good season in at Hull they will be able to flip him for 20M to the likes of Brentford or Leicester.

Good player.

I think it's more than a coincidence that Aaronson's return to form coincided with Rothwell moving back into the lineup.

Rothwell's forward-looking play and the pressure he applied to the defense by constantly pushing forward brought Aaronson into the game in ways we hadn't been seeing. Just another way in which Rothwell impressed last night.

The two halves were like chalk and cheese. First half we seemed scared to move the ball fast..so many interchanges between the back four before launching upfield. Second half, we came out seemingly full of ambition and purpose. Can't help but wonder if Farke got them in at half time and pointed out we were too ponderous and to go for their throats (so to speak).

We were excellent in the second half last night. Absolutely dominated them.

Regarding Joffy, personally i would keep him. I like him.

Good performance without going overboard. We did the job and now we have our confidence back after the Pompey defeat. Concerns for me has to be the use of the bench players. You can see that James is tired and he needs a rest, why can't Largie be utilised, Gnonto is not playing all that great but Largie was doing so well, scoring goals before injury. Aaronson is another that looks tired out and changes must be made to protect the players. As for Joseph coming on he is just there to make up the numbers, the goals are just not coming, even when given the opportunity. I see on loan Joffy scored for Hull puts him level with Joseph on goals scored.

Actually he was and still could be, very little game time since what? November, yet he's still jt third for assists. Only Firpo and James ahead. Which considering Rothwell gets all the dead balls and Aaronson is supposed to be in the creator position is telling

The corner from which we beat Sunderland recently was all Gnonto forcing a quality save from their keeper
