weasel wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 10:30 pm Sunderland's recruitment of players doesn't bother me one bit. Without any disrespec to Sunderland any player who is going there hasn't been getting offers from better clubs or Sunderland are paying over the odds, both in regards to transfer fees and wages to get the players. Take that fella that we supposedly bid for in the low £20m region and they paid £30m for. Now that smacks of overpaying to simply price other clubs out of the market and presumably no other clubs, including us, thought he was worth that. Now it might turn out to be a great signing or he might be a player they are struggling to recoup money on next season as they have a fire sale.

Our recruitment has looked very sensible. We seem to have a better idea of the value of players than we did under Orta (when we operated in the same way as Sunderland by simply paying more than players were worth and giving them great contracts that totally worked in their favour when we got relegated). We seem to have bought players that should not need to acclimatise, that know their game, that will have had ups and downs. Okay we still need a couple more but I am confident we will get them in the mad scramble that is the last few days of the transfer window, I always felt that we didn't need wholesale changes but just two or three to the starting line-up to replace the glaring weakness (Meslier) and positions where players left (Firpo and Solomon) , The other signings would have to fight their way in.
When you look at this, what are your thoughts ? :

Perri
Bogle-Bornauw-Bijol-Gudmundson
Longstaff-Stach-Harrison
Nmecha-DCL-Okafor

That^ added to all the players from last year that were nearly ready to take on the bottom Prem 6 and he should have enough now, and it's down to Farke from here on in.
Bar Largie who the jury is out on Prem wise, in Rothwell etc he's parted with the right players that needed to be cast off imo and if Farke doesn't get this right come October end, there is enough for any new incoming manager to work with.

Darlow
Justin-Rodon-Struijk-Byram
Ampadu-Gruev-Tanaka
James-Aaronson-Gnonto
Piroe

He has enough now for no excuses.

I think we have enough to avoid relegation or certainly make a better fight of it than the last 6 promoted sides. Daft as it sounds even though we conceded 5 v Arsenal it wasn't like they ripped us to pieces so I think defensively we should be able to compete. Who is in our back 4 time will tell. The keeper situation is of concern but Perri was decent in the Frnech League so hopefully the Arsenal match was just a bit of a blip. Against Everton he made a smart save and time will tell - what I do know is that without a decent keeper we will be right up against it. If we'd kept Meslier in goal then I think we'd have gone down.

Midfield and Stach and Ampadu look the part. I'm not sure about Tanaka and Gruev. Tanaka has concerned me in both games where he has had moments where he has completely lacked composure and looked like a player who feels like he doesn't belong in the prem. It may well be that when everyone is fit that the midfield is Ampadu, Stach and Longstaff, Longstaff should be fine in there.

Out wide and up front is a concern but I think we have enough goals there to stay up. Might be more a case of 6 players getting 6 goals rather than any player getting double figures.

It is a tough task but I think we just about have the players to stay up but in Farke we have someone who can hopefully get the best out of them - just as he has done for the last 2 years.

Newcastle sign Woltemade in club record £69m deal .

Woltemade, who will wear the number 27, has not been registered in time to make his debut against Leeds United on Saturday.

Indeed. You just knew complaints were going to flood in as soon as anything went wrong. I really believe its what certain fans were waiting for, as they knew it was just a matter of time.
But each to their own, if thats how they want to ( supposedly ) support the club then so be it.

I await the meltdown at the end of the transfer window if we have not signed a Musiala.

It will never stop for some fans. We were by far the best team in the league last season. Over 100 points, scored more goals than anyone else and yet some fans never stopped complaining about this or that could/should have been better. We are only 3 league games into the new season, trying to bed in new players in a much higher standard of league and we already have the same fans complaining.
You just have to let them carry on, they will never ever change thier views.

Some would rather see us have a bad run, get rid of Farke, moan about the replacement, watch us get relegated and then say they told us so. That would make them so happy.

Deep in the hizzle-dazzle of Elland Road, the Leedsy fanfolk erupts with joybloom glee, for Patrick Bamford’s contract fizzles with a whizzbang off the mouldybooks! Hoorayhoorah, the gaffer conjures a splendiferous unburdenbag, leaving the fanfolk to bask in laughradiance and cheerflame in a fantabulosus freejoy with a twiddledoo and shinehope zizzledance!
