Match Thread Leeds United vs Burnley Match Thread

Post by Cjay »

Friday 1st May, 8:00pm | EllandRoad

Daniel Farke was unequivocal in his press conference this week, there is no time for self-pity, no time to dwell. Burnley come to Elland Road on Friday night with the job of securing our Premier League future not yet finished. The FA Cup was the dream but Premier League survival was always this season's mission. Forty points sounds comfortable but in the most contested relegation battle in recent memory, Farke is right to refuse to let his players relax. Friday night is an opportunity to get the job done, a huge one at that.

On paper it's the easiest of our remaining fixtures, under the lights at Elland Road against an already relegated team with four wins all season and just nine away points all campaign. They arrive managerless too, Scott Parker departing by mutual consent on Thursday with Mike Jackson parachuted in as interim with barely 24 hours notice. But football is not played on paper. In three previous meetings with Parker's Burnley we have not scored, two defeats and a nil nil draw, the two nil defeat at Turf Moor earlier this season being arguably one of the most frustrating performances of the season.

The scorelines don't tell the full story though. The xG across those three games suggests Leeds created and threatened but were wasteful rather than outplayed. Burnley have not found some magic formula to shut us out, we have just not been clinical enough. The change of manager changes the dynamic too. Parker would have set up to frustrate and hit on the break, exactly the gameplan that has worked against us before. Jackson is a different proposition, an interim with nothing to lose whose players are liberated by relegation and may actually have a go, which could suit Leeds far more.

Leeds go into this with the confidence of a five match unbeaten league run and without the baggage of a supposed hoodoo thanks to Parkers departure. The injury situation does raise tactical questions for Farke though. Without Gudmundsson and a natural left wing back replacement, does he stick with the back five that has underpinned that defensive solidity, or revert to a back four as we saw in the second half at Wembley? Okafor and Bijol are doubts but Farke is hopeful of having both. Stach is fit after 45 minutes at Wembley and Calvert-Lewin, 11 goals but one in his last eight, faces a Burnley side that has conceded 68 this season.

A win on Friday and Premier League survival is virtually assured.

I don't think it is the biggest game of the season. If we lose then it isn't like it settles anything. Likewise if we win it doesn't settle anything.

Hard to know what to make of this game. The concern is that in 3 meetings v Parker's Burnley we haven't scored. That though would be mitigated by the fact that the xg against them in those matches suggest we should have scored so it isn't like they have completed stopped us from threatening.

I would expect Parker to set them up defensively. Despite them being relegated he will want to get something from the game and knows that their best chance probably lies in frustrating us and hoping we over commit - which has been the case in those 2 defeat to them. The only time we took a point was in the match where we didn't over commit (the 0-0 last year) as a draw was a good result for us.

Ideal scenario is that we start well and get in front and then pull the strings and put the match out of their reach - but football is usually not as straightforward as that.

On paper a home banker given they are one of the few teams worse away than us with a Grand Total of 9 points?

Worst team in the league last 12

On the flip side they did draw vs Liverpool

Have taken points off Manure all be it at home.

And of course they've been an issue for us last 3 games, no wins 2 defeats.

And pressure can do funny things.
Nah... not even close

It is without any doubt the biggest game of the season. 43 will not go down.
Thats asking 3 teams to potentially have to get to 44.
Maybe 43 on GD.
Friday is massive. Huge. Large. A whopper.

Just don't lose this game as a point would edge us closer to staying up.

Tough fixtures this weekend for both Spurs & West Ham.

No offence Tyzy but you'll be pessimistic if West Ham need 6 points and 20 goals to get past us on the final day..Long live your pessimism mate. Enjoy it

Totally agree.

Also the fact we play Spurs & West Ham in our final 3 fixtures when they are fighting for their lives isn't ideal. Both away from home I might add.

That said I'm really looking forward to the climax to the season as it sure beats Championship mid table mediocrity which we all endured for far too many years.

Yes, rather have our game than theirs. We need 3 points and we play 3 of the bottom 4 teams. It really doesn’t get much easier. If we can’t manage that …

WH play us fighting for our lives, Arsenal fighting for the title, Brentford fighting for Europe.
Spurs play us fighting for our lives, Chelsea and Everton fighting for Europe and Villa a top 4 side.
If Newcastle lose to Brighton they’ll also be fighting for their lives and play both WH and Spurs.

Certainly the biggest opportunity of the season. A win over Burnley at home will probably seal the deal. But I really think we can win all four of our remaining games. And I'll be excited to see us getting back to league play.
