Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 7th May) - Farke has delivered on his manifesto, so what next?

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 7th May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Farke has delivered on his manifesto - so what next?

Daniel Farke has more than delivered on his manifesto this season, steadying Leeds United's ship after the turbulence of relegation and ensuring the Whites will compete in the Premier League again next term. With top flight safety all but secured, the club now faces a critical juncture that will Shape its trajectory for years to come. Farke's current contract runs through the 2026/27 season, and unless there is a complete rethink from 49ers Enterprises, he is expected to see out the duration of that agreement. This extended runway provides both opportunity and complexity, particularly as the summer transfer window approaches with a reported war chest of £120 million plus additional funds from player sales.

For the Whites, this represents a fascinating juncture! Farke has defied the odds and with when forced out of his comfort zone, but proven himself quite the tactician, but the harsh reality suggests that 49ers Enterprises will eventually extend beyond his perceived ceiling. Once Farke's current deal concludes (at the end of next season), Leeds will likely seek to elevate their project with a manager who represents a further step up, perhaps someone with Premier League pedigree or European experience.

So how do Leeds approach this summer's transfer window? Do they spend conservatively this summer, recruiting only for bare necessities to survive relegation battle, or embrace a more aggressive strategy and bring in a marquee signing or two, capable of transforming the squad's quality? A conservative approach protects the club's financial future while avoiding the pitfalls of lavish spending, should they struggle to adapt. Conversely, splurging on proven Premier League talents could accelerate the project's evolution, sending a statement of intent while providing Farke with the tools necessary to exceed modest expectations.

Given the circumstances, Leeds United would be wise to pursue a balanced strategy that avoids the extremes of both austerity and recklessness. The club should invest intelligently in positions of genuine need, targeting players with Premier League experience who can contribute immediately without commanding astronomical fees. Simultaneously, retaining the core of the squad that secured promotion and allowing Farke's tactical system to develop organically would maintain the stability that has defined this successful campaign. By combining smart recruitment with fiscal responsibility, Leeds can strengthen their hand for the challenging season ahead while preserving the flexibility required to make further strides towards mid table safety.

Leeds eye defensive overhaul as summer recruitment plans take shape

Leeds United's defensive unit is set to undergo significant scrutiny this summer, as the club look to strengthen at the back ahead of what they hope will be a more competitive Premier League campaign. With Daniel Farke understood to be prioritising centre-back reinforcements, the potential arrivals of high-profile targets could fundamentally reshape the defensive pecking order at Elland Road — and force some difficult conversations with established members of the squad.

Leeds are reportedly targeting two defensive additions. The club is said to be considering a move for Santiago Bueno, whose Wolves side suffered relegation this season, with the Uruguayan valued at approximately £13m. Additionally, the Whites are monitoring Danilho Doekhi's situation at Union Berlin, with the Dutch defender available as a free agent this summer. Either signing would represent a considerable statement of intent from the 49ers hierarchy.

The question, of course, is who makes way. Sebastiaan Bornauw and Pascal Struijk may both find themselves squeezed out if the club land two high-calibre additions, while Joe Rodon — a fan favourite and model of consistency across the 2025-26 season — cannot consider himself entirely untouchable either. Since transitioning to a back five, Farke has regularly paired Rodon with Jaka Bijol, and it is the Slovenian who is widely regarded as the stronger of the two. Were Leeds to land someone of Doekhi's level alongside Bueno, the arithmetic becomes uncomfortable for those currently occupying the defensive berths. Tough decisions will need to be made if Leeds are to move up to the next rung of the ladder.

I don't think Rodon will be the one to hold us back... We do need upgrades but not sure centre defence is one of them. Replacing Struijk would be key if he moves on of course but neither of the two names linked are left footed..

I think it would be a mistake to get rid of Joe Rodon...it would be wasting money in an area where we dont need to spend, unless Struijk gets sold.

We don't have any defensive deadwood. Everyone can and has done a job this year to a high standard. Bornauw too. To achieve mid-table the easiest option is to add one or two more high quality additions and hope we can keep the ones already here. That's the easiest scenario. I think we would do just fine with who we already have and can still achieve a higher finish next year without any additions as its the other areas of the squad that need bolstering to turn a relegation scrap into mid table comfort. If we can keep our trio of Pascal, Rodon and Bijol, 1 more quality addition might just be enough. Our defense has never been more versatile.

What next for Farke? A contract extention this summer taking him to summer 2029. He's deserved it.

Exactly that.

Here's where I'd upgrade or add for depth

LWB - We need a second left footed defender that side so an upgrade on Gudds is one solution, or find a quality back up/someone to compete

CB - We need a fifth as it stands. But that doesn't need to be a starter or upgrade on what we have. Question marks on Struijk and Bornauw staying but 5 in squad makes sense

AMF/#10 - We need one if we want to improve, currently Okafor or Aaronson I guess. An upgrade is needed

Striker - Again we only have one and need another if Piroe continues to be overlooked or sold. I'd upgrade DCL and he becomes our bench forward

Winger - We don't use them much but Farke likes them when chasing games, I'm ok with James, assuming he comes back fully fit. Okafor is ok as a winger. Wouldn't mind a better left winger. I love Gnonto but Farke doesn't seem to rate him and that's not changing, doubtful Ramazani returns

Yeah great idea. Let's get rid of Rodon, one our most consistent performers this season.

First of all Farke hasn`t delivered everything required of him ( yet ) :) When he does that in the coming weeks then its a job very well done, and hats of to him.
As far as the arrivals and departures are concerned i think its way too early to be getting all concerned or worried about who might leave and who might stay, until our position in the league is secured. Once thats done and dusted then we can play football manager all summer as to the type of new players we need.
We really do need a good number 10 type player to give us more options as an attacking side, that for me is a must have.

I think we need to make sure we're 100% safe before we start talking recruitment and Farke's future, imo.

Before we dash off signing great new hopes....what have we got in loan and youth?

Biggest question for me...when does Harry Gray start to tip toe into the first team?
2nd biggest question....we have a left winger in Ramrazani. Shouldn't we be getting him back in?

Regarding the defence. I agree with Subhuman, if better quality available and affordable then we could look to increase the level of the 5 CB.

LWB - worry for me as no natural covers for Guds.

We haven't even talked about the most precarious position - our keeper

In a standard Catholic genuflection, the right knee goes down to the ground, and the left foot goes forward, This is why catholics are often called left footers.

Is Pascal a catholic? Since so much is being made of this left footedness and how it is a tequirement for a solid defence.

Nothing, Harry is a couple of years away at least. After that it's slim pickings. On loan, Joffy and Rama are our best players but it would need a lot for either to be playing for us next season

I thought Darlow was nailed on now?

Since December, ie once Farke and the players had settled into the Premier League we have gained more points than 11 other teams - only three fewer than Liverpool. We’ve only lost one more match than Arsenal in that time. Given the relative squad strengths, I’d say that Farke has outperformed most of his compatriots. Why on earth would we be taking a risk on a ‘name’ manager.
Look at Man U since they decided Solskjaer wasn’t a big enough name.

It’s been a remarkable “journey” for Farke and Leeds.
Take the time period starting with the final year when we got relegated a few seasons ago, right through to the end of this season. From a business perspective, what the club (49ers) have done in that time period would make a fantastic research topic for an MBA student. The off the pitch stuff has been complex, fascinating and well managed overall.

Ditto for Rads but from a much lesser starting point

The similarities between the two regimes are startling when you think about it. I'm far from getting ahead of myself when it comes to the 49ers. I don't remember many people grumbling at Radz in his first 3 years. It was almost constant praise on and off the pitch from the signing of Bielsa right through to the club in the community aspect. Everything smelt of roses. The fact Radz followed Ken Bates, GFH and Cellino, gave him a good hand to play with at the start, especially with the fans.

Leeds have just had 2 fantastic seasons in the Championship culminating in a 100 points team of Champions and survival at the first attempt in the Premier League. A fantastic achievement in any book if you ask me. But that's really just the team and the manager. The biggest test yet for the 49ers is just around the corner. It's a do or die summer in my opinion, a first real test of where they want to take the club. Will it be top flight stability or will it be another hovering around 'the zone'. The s**t quickly hit the fan with Radz and when his back was against the wall, ultimately he couldn't come up with the answers. That can't be allowed to happen again and if it does we are in trouble.

My view on ownership is like many aspects of life. You learn little about anyone when everything goes swimmingly and learn everything about everyone when the chips are down.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Farke has done nothing but succeed since the minute he walked through the door. What manager could possibly represent an upgrade?

Seriously. Farke built a squad to play in the Championship where the football is very different from the sort played in the EPL. Having won promotion, Farke had to retool the squad and teach it to play an entirely different sort of game.

The managers who have met with greater success have been the ones with greater resources. Swap out Farke for Arteta or Guardiola and I don't see our current squad surpassing what they've done under Farke, especially since Christmas. I understand good upper management requires that the club always be on the lookout for its next manager, but at this point I think we have to be more worried about other clubs looking to poach Farke than we have to worry about an upgrade.
