Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 16th July) Muharemovic to sign in next 24 hours

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 16th July, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Muharemovic to sign in next 24 hours

Leeds United are expected to announce the signing of Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemovic within the next 24 hours amidst heavy speculation that the Bosnian international has already arrived in West Yorkshire. By meeting Sassuolo’s valuation in full with a fixed fee of £34.1 million, (no performance related add-ons), the Whites bypassed their competition (including Newcastle Utd, Bournemouth and Sunderland). The deal represents a landmark investment for the club, falling just £900,000 short of the £35 million record fee paid for Georginio Rutter three years ago.

Muharemovic arrives at Elland Road with a pedigree built on resilience and top-flight experience. A key figure for Sassuolo last term, the left-sided centre-back featured in 32 of the side’s 38 Serie A matches, playing an instrumental role in their comfortable 11th-place finish. His path to the Premier League has been a steady ascent: after sharpening his skills in Austria, he joined the Juventus youth set-up in 2021. Though he did not make a senior appearance for the Turin giants, he gained vital experience during a successful loan spell at Sassuolo, where he helped guide the club to the Serie B title and subsequent promotion.

It is currently unclear whether Muharemovic will head straight to Leeds Beckett University to join his new teammates for their annual sports science testing, or if he will return to Greece to conclude his post-international break holiday. Regardless of his itinerary, the acquisition of a versatile, no nonsense defender suggests that Leeds United are determined to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level of the game.

Tanaka sale to balance the books?

Ao Tanaka’s future at Leeds United has become the subject of a concrete transfer saga as the Japanese international seeks a way out following a frustrating campaign defined by limited opportunities. Despite arriving at Elland Road in 2024 for a modest £2.9 million, the 27-year-old struggled to establish himself in the starting XI last season. While the club is reportedly open to a sale in the region of £8m - £10m a valuation many supporters argue falls well short of his true market potential, the financial windfall could prove vital. Should Leeds successfully secure the signing of Shea Charles for a reported £30 million, offloading Tanaka would be a strategic move to balance the books and reinvest in their midfield rebuild.

The landscape of his potential departure is complex, with a tug-of-war emerging between familiar grounds and career ambitions. While German sides such as Schalke 04, Union Berlin, and Hannover 96 are closely monitoring his situation, the combination of Leeds’ asking price and Tanaka’s personal wage demands may prove prohibitive for those clubs. Furthermore, despite his prior success at Fortuna Düsseldorf, Tanaka is reportedly prioritizing a stay in English football to prove his capabilities in the Premier League. With SC Freiburg also registered as interested, the coming weeks will be pivotal in determining whether Tanaka finds a new home in England or is forced to look back toward the Bundesliga to revitalise his career.

Freebee Morita not on Leeds rada

Japanese international midfielder Hidemasa Morita continues to hover on the radar of Europe’s transfer market. The 31‑year‑old midfielder, who enjoyed four productive seasons in Lisbon, has become a high‑profile free agent and is reportedly keeping his fitness sharp through individual work while weighing his options. Despite persistent links to Leeds United throughout the latter half of the last season, rumours that even suggested a formal offer had been tabled, Morita’s camp has made it clear that a move to Elland Road remains his preferred destination. His agent has stated outright that the player favours a Premier League challenge, and Leeds, under Daniel Farke, seemed the most plausible fit.

Nevertheless, the likelihood of a Leeds switch appears slim. The Whites have not tabled a concrete bid, and Farke’s recruitment strategy (since returning to the top flight) has favoured taller, more physical midfielders, profiles that do not align with Morita’s technical, ball‑playing style. The Japanese international has turned down several approaches from French and Middle‑Eastern clubs, signalling his willingness to wait for the right Premier League project. Whether that opportunity materialises at Leeds, another top‑flight side, or elsewhere remains to be seen, but Morita’s focus on testing himself in England’s elite division is unwavering.

If Leeds United sell Ao Tanaka for the reported fee of £8m it would be very stupid own goal and demonstrate the Club does not know the value of players. Buyers should be starting bidding around twice that amount IMHO.

At the same time the Club is considering lobbing circa £25m (3x as much as Tanaka's apparent worth!) at Southampton for Charles!

I think that if Tanaka is willing like Gruev or Longstaff to accept a squad role where he has to wait for his opportunity and then seize it as he did during the back end of last season then he is well worth keeping hold of particularly if you're only going to be getting that kind of money for him. The problem is that if he is agitating for a move then his value is set by what the demand is for him and if it's only coming from Germany then it's likely that £10m is the ceiling because as we have seen with the likes of Stach etc. the price point is lower over there except for the very top echelon. At the moment there doesn't seem to be any Premier League interest and unless it does emerge any theoretical valuation of him remains just that. You are then left with the dilemma as to whether you hold onto an unhappy player (if that's true ) until someone matches your theoretical valuation or you take a medium profit , thank him for his service and move on .

£8m for Tanaka but £30m for Charles makes no sense

Leeds United have officially served a statement of claim against Leicester City, seeking significant financial compensation for missing out on automatic promotion to the Premier League during the 2023-24 Championship season.

Legal context and precedent

The legal challenge follows a landmark ruling where Everton was ordered to pay Burnley £35 million in damages. Burnley successfully argued that Everton’s breaches of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) directly caused their relegation in 2021-22. This case established a clear framework for clubs to pursue civil restitution against rivals who gain an unfair sporting advantage through overspending.

Core arguments - Financial loss:

Leeds had to endure another grueling season in the second tier and miss out on massive top-flight television and commercial revenue streams after losing the play-off final to Southampton.

Rule breaches:

Leicester City won the Championship title that year but were later penalized with a six-point deduction for financial violations committed during that specific campaign.

Damages request:

The filed statement of claim demands an official assessment of damages to calculate the precise revenue lost due to the altered competitive landscape. The legal battle is in its earliest stages, and an official hearing before an independent disciplinary commission is not expected to take place until next summer.

Finances pure and simple. It's all very well saying it doesn't matter as we got promoted the following year but what if that hadn't have happened? We could have had another 20 years trying to claw our way back up and falling further and further behind.

If we'd gone up that season no selling Gray, Summerville or Rutter just to balance the books. We'd be a year further along with the building of the new West Stand.

Leicester cheated, pure and simple. Would people feel better about this case if Leicester were still in the prem and we were still in the championship?

Why are we persevering with this nonsense? Get over it and move on. We went up and stayed up anyway. We probably would've gone down had we gone up that year anyway.

It cost us a 100 milion pounds at least that's why. We had a better team that first year with Archie, Geo and Summerville so had we gone up we'd have been in a better position. At the very least those players values go up

I thought we were going to fail ffp if we were promoted, so we'd have had to sell someone anyway. Who would we have survived ahead of though? As Tottenham finished 17th that season.

Don't think either of those arguments hold water. PSR in the prem is a different beast, the amounts change plus it would have depended on where we were in our three yr cycle. Cry's price goes up, Geo's doesn't but he may have stayed. I reckon we keep Archie and the odds of staying up probably better than they were last season. We'd have been 100M plus richer don't forget and you could borrow on that certainty

The fact is Leicesters cheating cost us 120M as a bare minumum, it's likely a lot more than that with incresed ticket prices, better sponsorship etc. Leicester earned 116M central payment to start with that season. If you're ok with cheating then fair enough, I never have been

I'm not fine with cheating, but we went up and stayed up. Leicester are in League One and have already received their comeuppance. Had we got promoted that season, we'd have gone straight back down, so we're in a much stronger position for missing out. How much money do you think a League One side with broke owners are going to have? They've already sold off the parachute payments, so can't use that. Say we fail SCR and finish 10th and the 10 teams below us all sue us, will you still be in favour? Where does it end exactly? Are we going to sue any club that finishes above us going forward?

It's only a loophole if it works and since Leicester have been punished for the breaches 'eventually' it would appear that the 'loophole' worked only to postpone the punishment. As Burnley were successful in their case against Everton ( albeit under appeal) it establishes a precedent that there is a liability to clubs who are relegated /not promoted in certain circumstances .If the Everton decision is overturned on appeal I suspect this one may be dropped but otherwise there appears to be a strong case . As far as I can see it would only be in the relegation/promotion situation as Leeds dropped /settled their claim against Everton in relation to the Marsch 'scraping survival season'.

So what is the argument exactly? "We missed out on a £100m, please give it to us." They'll just say, "well you've got promotion and stayed up anyway and made the money". All I see is nothing other than embarassment for pushing forward with this.
