No brainer for me!

We get so much more out of our free signing Calvert-Lewin.

So glad we didn't splash out £43m for the Palace striker.

I can't recall being impressed by Strand-Larsen when watching him vs Leeds.

I think S-L in time may eclipse DCL, but I wouldn't expect by much. As such us not spending the money on him meant we could sign others, such as Tarik and Trafford. In time we hopefully will be ina position to buy a striker that is an upgrade on DCL and S-L. So for me I'd take DCL and the money over S-L every time and probably would take DCL over S-L even without the monetary side if it was just a straight choice and both were at the club.

For the money paid for Strand Larson I'd rather have Jackson who went to Villa, or Delap who signed for Forest. Either of those would have been a potential upgrade on DCL and both have youth on their side as well.

DCL every time over Strand Larson though.

More interesting may have been Delap as he was someone available in the summer we potentially could have signed but didn't.

Still think overall JLS is probably a better player than DCL.

But for the purposes of the poll DCL (all be it not as high on him as some)

I remember a discussion we had a couple of seasons ago when everton were trying to unsettle gnonto for £30+, we ought to have done the same for DCL, but we kept bamford !!!!
Imagine if we'd have looked forward rather than keep dead wood, we'd have had DCL and flogged gnonto and got shut of bamford in one swoop, now we have a different recruitment team things may change.

Recollections can vary over time but there was never any £30m+ bid for Gnonto by those cheapskates Neverton; it was more like half that amount and considering the sell on clause we would not have seen much of the money in any case. DCL at Neverton was a crock - an odd purple patch but mainly out injured (Bamford too spent a long, long time injured and no team was going to pay good money to get him) plus we didn't have the kind of medical team back up as we have now so really there'd be no sense in doing anything there IMHO. Would have been a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire!

I thought Strand Larson looked the better player on Sunday, but then I do rate him.. DCL for this poll though, mainly due to cost and not talent. JSL a very good target man, looks a little stronger and quicker than DCL

They're on the same salary but Palace overpaid the fee... TBF he scored the goal that reset their season, they were in freefall and going down. A free JSL v DCL on the same salary might yield a different answer.

Yes I agree Strand Larson did ok on Sunday and looked a decent enough target man. Held the ball up nicely at times to allow players to support the attack then linked the play to get them in our final third. Downside was he didn't look much of a threat.

If we'd have got SL for a much smaller fee I'd agree, he's younger and is a strong unit and imo can hold the ball up better, I agree with what SH and Jammy both say above, not that it matters now that ship has sailed, can't knock what DCL has done thus far.

I thought Strand-Larsen was average against us, Palace lacked firepower - 5.5/10

Calvert-Lewin didn't have his best game, but his workrate was far more effective than SL. - 7/10

Trafford, Muharemovic, Ampadu & Calvert-Lewin are an important part of the spine of our team.

We'd miss anyone of those four!

Calvert-Lewin is also a leader on & off the pitch.

DCL was a 6-6.5. I'd have scored JSL around 7.5. Palace created a fair bit to our not much and JSL was a big reason why

But I get the bias, it's natural and DCL will have much better games.

Beyond that just a warm body running around.

JSL performed better on the day imo, was quite involved.

But I'd have Delap over both

I watched the game twice, DCL got through a lot of hard graft without too much joy from the two Palace defenders marking him.

You scored him correctly imo!

You've always preferred other PL club players beyond ours, Cjay.

"A warm body running around" is just an sheer insult on our No.9.

We'd have been inept without him last season, probably relegated.

God help us if we lose Dom this season, as Nmecha isnt the answer!

You must watch a totally different game to me.

It was a sitter, time to see the cross, well weighted, no defender near him, could have taken a touch if he wanted.

The only thing he couldn't do was hit it straight at the goalie, which he did.

It just shows the bias of your ratings sorry, 5 decent ground passes, he only made 6 in the entire game, what is a decent pass?

Held the ball up? Did It lead to anything? Did he successfully set an attack away? Win a free kick?

He was poor to average at best as reflected in the player ratings thread where he was the 2nd lowest of our starters
