Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Friday 16th October) Nmecha contract talks stall over game time

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Friday 16th October, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Nmecha contract talks stall over game time

Leeds United are yet to reach agreement with striker Lukas Nmecha over a new contract, with talks stalled by the player’s demand for greater assurances on regular first-team involvement. The 27-year-old Germany international is free to leave for nothing next summer, leaving the club facing the prospect of losing him without a fee unless progress is made soon. Nmecha joined as a free agent two years ago, becoming Leeds’ first signing after their return to the Premier League. His goals last season were an important factor in the side’s survival, yet his role has diminished significantly this term.

He has managed only 75 league minutes in the top flight, all as a substitute, and remains well down the pecking order behind the consistent Dominic Calvert-Lewin. That lack of game time is understood to be the main barrier to an extension. While Daniel Farke continues to value Nmecha’s work rate and impact from the bench, the club has so far been unable to provide the playing-time guarantees his representatives are seeking. Sources close to the situation suggest Leeds still hope to retain him as a useful squad option, but they are conscious that replacing a striker of his profile would require substantial investment.

In 37 appearances for the Whites he has scored seven goals. Although his overall contribution has been solid, elements of his hold-up play and distribution have drawn scrutiny. With opportunities limited, it is little surprise that alternative options are being explored. Interest has already emerged from clubs in the higher reaches of the Championship, where a more prominent role would be available, as well as from sides in the Bundesliga. Leeds remain reluctant to allow Nmecha to depart without compensation and would prefer to secure a new deal that protects his value. However, with negotiations yet to advance and the player’s camp exploring other destinations, the likelihood of an amicable separation next summer is growing.

Liverpool Join Race for Muharemovic as European Interest Intensifies

Liverpool have become the latest heavyweight club to keep close tabs on Leeds United central defender Tarik Muharemovic. The 23-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international, signed from Sassuolo for £34.1 million in the summer, has made an immediate impact in the Premier League and is now firmly on the radar of several of Europe’s elite sides. He arrived at Elland Road as a direct replacement for Pascal Struijk and has settled quickly under Daniel Farke. The left-footed centre-back has featured regularly, showing the physicality, composure on the ball, and defensive reliability that first attracted attention during his time in Serie A.

His strong start has not gone unnoticed. Inter Milan remain attentive after missing out on him last summer, when they reportedly agreed personal terms before the deal collapsed. Barcelona have continued to monitor his progress after tracking him previously, while Bayern Munich have identified him as a leading target for 2027 amid their own long-term defensive planning. Liverpool’s interest adds further weight to the growing list of admirers. For Leeds, the situation presents a familiar dilemma. The club have been praised for unearthing a high-potential defender at a relatively early stage, and with Muharemovic under contract until 2031, they hold a strong negotiating position.

Sources close to the club indicate they have no intention of selling in the near term, including the January window. Leeds are unlikely to consider any offers unless they represent a substantial profit. Doubling the original outlay would still leave them short of a replacement of comparable quality and age, so any departure would almost certainly require a fee well in excess of £100 million. Whether Liverpool or any other suitor can test that resolve remains to be seen. For now, Muharemovic continues to establish himself as one of the more promising centre-backs in the Premier League, with his performances only increasing the scrutiny from Europe’s biggest clubs.

Everton Should Never Have Let Calvert-Lewin Go – Even at £200k pw

Duncan Ferguson has told Everton they should never have allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to leave, even if it meant paying him £200,000 a week. The former Everton striker and coach made the comments on Overlap Daily, arguing that the club made a clear mistake in letting the forward depart when his contract expired last year. Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in 2016 and spent the majority of his career at Goodison Park before leaving as a free agent. Injuries heavily disrupted his final seasons, with the striker missing 529 days through various problems from the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

After his exit he was linked with Fiorentina and Sunderland before joining Leeds United, where he has since rediscovered his form. The England international scored 15 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions last season and has added four more in eight games this term. Ferguson, who worked with Calvert-Lewin during his early days at the club, believes Everton were wrong to let him go. “You should never have let Dominic go,” Ferguson said. “I coached him as a young man and put him in my team. He scored his first two goals in the same game, the one I managed against Chelsea. He’s a great player. You should never, ever have let him go.

I don’t know what’s happened behind the scenes, but if he wanted £200,000 a week, give him £200,000 a week. If he wanted £100,000 a week, give him it.” Ferguson also believes Calvert-Lewin deserves a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. “I don’t see why not. Harry Kane’s there, but Dominic should be in there. He’s 6ft 3in, he’s quick, he’s got a lovely finish, and he gets in the six-yard box. He’s got a tremendous leap. I don’t see many other centre-forwards like him.” The 29-year-old’s performances at Leeds have only strengthened the view that Everton allowed a valuable asset to leave for nothing.

Morning
Nmencha it appears has either a bad attitude, bad agent or both,.DF is not a man whose resolve is tested by demanding game time.
We need another striker as it is so
Maybe 2 now.

Tarik thankfully is on a good contract and we don't let him go,he is the real.deal a class act, as I said a few weeks ago, I see Liverpool wanting him and here we go.
If we get a substantial offer over £60M sadly I see him going although not this season, maybe after tomorrow when we get 3 points and he's witnessed the rabid atmosphere he'll want to stay and continue with the rebuild.

DCL is a great acquisition for us hopefully stays injury free, sometimes a player just needs a new chance elsewhere after so long at one club, we still need another striker willing to compete though.

I will be fuming if we let tarik go even in the next 2 seasons as he's our rock and we need him.to attract others, if we do sell, hope its abroad and not to the city of pity scroungers.

McGuire cost 80M 7 years ago, Tarik nothing less than 100M then. I've a feeling he'll want to go so we must maximize our profit, really tough to hold onto players once the Champions league elite come calling....

Agree with these sentiments although LUFC are a pretty notorious soft touch when it comes to transfer deals, we've only maximised on the phillips to city deal in my living memory.
If we do manage north of £100M it would be some deal, but, sadly as I say, this is LU and we let him go for less than we paid with Elvidi thrown in.

There need to be some cold and hard decisions to be made when it comes to the cases of Tariq and Nmecha.

For me the latter is an easy one. Nmecha has filled a gap as we attempted to put in our foundations to survive in the Premiership post promotion. He's done a job for us but as his contract comes to a close we need to be looking for an upgrade not try to carry on as we are or stand still. He's done OK but hasn't shown anything to suggest that there is more to come so a new contract would be a pointless exercise im my mind. Personally, I'm not that bothered if he stays or he goes.

Now Tariq is another kettle of fish. If the "big" clubs come a calling and wave £100m plus about, LUFC are not in a position to be turning their noses up at that kind of dosh. Particularly if the player indicates that he'd like to go and at 23 years of age I can't say I'd blame him as much as that hurts. Any less of a fee and we should be telling callers to go forth and multiply! That said, we should be trying to build up our squad and bring in better quality which I believe we have done since promotion. Hope we can continue that. I hope we can hang onto Tariq a bit longer - he was a good spot by the recruitment team

It’s a matter of when not if for Tarik’s exit I’m afraid, we’re just not in a place yet where we are likely to be able to hold on to such a talent long-term.

In the end, I hope he goes abroad rather to a PL rival, and for a huge fee.

Unfortunately Leeds have four viable options for right CB, but only Tarik on the left.

Forget selling our best players, we aren’t Brighton. Tarek is exactly the kind of player we should be buying, not selling.

Nmecha has done OK, but I wouldn't want him starting too many times.

His brother Felix is a far better footballer.

Muharemovic is my current favaourite player, he was from day one as I'd seen his greatness watching European/World Cup matches previously.

I had no doubt Tarik was an upgrade on Struijk from the onset, even though Pascal had his best season in 2025/26.

Fingers crossed we can hold on to him. £100m has to be the starting fee for any of the snakes pursuing him.

No way we’re getting £100m for Tarik atm, I reckon we’d be offered £50m with a revised offer of 60. In that case it’s an easy decision not to sell but if he keeps playing like he has for another season or two then we’re talking serious money. TBF the owners are starting to show that they’re very shrewd in their transfer dealings and aren’t the same pushovers we’ve had in the past.

We need to take a fee in January and move on, assuming the recruitment boys have someone in mind to improve our striking competition.

We’ve been linked with a couple of players recently, no doubt partly to send a message to the Nmecha camp.

If he’s digging his heels in regarding a guarantee of game time he should know better.

He should break records, he's young, and now proven at Prem and international level. 50M doesn't come close, that's barely profit

Everybody was wringing their hands when we “overpaid” for Muharemovich in the summer, and tbf Juventus couldn’t believe their luck that they’d got £17m from their 50% sell-on.

Looks like great business now.

Unfortunately the Leeds recruitment failings become more evident when it’s time to sell.

We are a few games into the season and talk of selling a valuable acquisition is bizarre. I will be surprised if we do not see him here for 2 seasons.

Much depends on how we do this season.

Don't think I said we overpaid for Tarik, possible though. There was that thing about their chairman expecting 20M for him, ... Trafford is the one I said we overpaid for and still think that. Certain positions carry more value, keeper is toward the bottom of that list

£70m is just doubling our money. Granted it sounds like a colossal amount (and it is as it smashes what we sold Raphinha for) but hopefully we are at the stage where we can be demanding twice what we paid for Tarik.

A two year contract scream - temporary stop gap. Perhaps, the club should have had an option for a third?

Spreading the cost is fine, and long as its worth the extra $$$. It all goes into the same pot at the end of the day.
