should grayson be sacked?

Post by wakey^white »

ok so whats everyones opinion on this? i dont want shouting down just an open debate and vote as to wether you think simon has what it takes to move us forward.

i personally feel hes walking a very fine line. i dont need anyone to tell me we've just come into the championship and it's about consolidation this season. im basing this topic on a very poor 10 months which will soon be a year.

im sorry to say i can't see simon lasting a month and as much as i wanted him to lead us on, things have been too wrong for too long so i think it's time for him to depart IF the next few are as bad as last night.

I voted give him a few more game.s That way, if we reapply before xmas the new manager will have enough time to access the players he wants to keep/lose and can have a play at the transfer market!

If it were up to me it would be the last one. Not sure I'll get what I want though.

It is difficult to say. He only just signed a new three year contract as our manager, so Bates might stick with him for the long haul through these difficult times becaue we will probably come out of them stronger. However, with Bates being a businessman, and knowing him he won't want another relegation, he may well pull the trigger sooner rather than later if he believes Grayson is not up to the job. Remember his record at Chelsea, whenever someone had out stayed their welcome, or they were not taking the club forwards... he got rid without mercy.

So for me I voted the next few games. I'd probably say he has the next five games to turn things around otherwise he could face the sack - Scunthorpe (away), Coventry (away), Hull (home), Bristol City (home), and Norwich (away). None of those games are easy, but if we do lose 3 or 4 of those matches, then we could find ourselves in the bottom three and he could find himself sacked. I might be wrong, but if we do lose that many games, and if we do fall into the bottom three; I can't see Bates sticking with him. He'll support him whilst we are mid table, but if we fall to relegation candidates, his support will soon disappear.

My vote is in the 'give him the rest of the season' pool. Then, the situation can be re-assessed.

It would be no good sacking Grayson if we haven't got a top manager to replace him

Bates did that with Blackwell, Carver won his first game v Brum & consequently lost his next 5/6 games, it was 6 weeks before Wise/Poyet were appointed in which we lost too many points, never recovered & relegated in the end

If Martin O'Neill was prepared to take the job, i'd be a happy man

Dream on :!:

I understand that Martin O'Neill is a very popular pundit and talks a great game, but if you look at his record in English football, what has he won? (I'm ignoring his time at Celtic, on the grounds that if you manage either celtic or Rangers you have a 50% chance of winning every competition you're in).

His honours are:

Wycombe 1990-95

Football Conference 1993
F A Trophy 1991, 1993
Division 3 Play-Off Winners 1994

Leicester 1995 - 2000

First Division Playoff 1996
League Cup 1997, 2000

Aston Villa 2006 - 10

Peace Cup 2009 WTF is that ???

He isn't quite the Messiah that the media talk him up to be!

No way O'Neill would come here and the number one reason is Bates. All this talk that Simon can buy whatever player he wants is Batesy-code for, if the player is a cheap transfer or free and wage under 10k a week (preferably cheaper), then yes, he can get anyone he wants. Simple. The Bates Bargain Hunt of 2010 has been a resounding fail. Simon is still just an employee of the Leeds United, and has a boss in Bates. For him to say anything else would result in him being unemployed rather quickly.

What do you expect?

Wycombe are and were a small club in the lower reaches of English football. Leicester were a step up, but what he did with them is the equivalent almost of what Alan Curbishley did with Charlton, but O'Neill won silverware with Leicester. So he did an excellent job with them considering teh resources he had. Remember he won silverware with Leicester when O'Leary and Graham and co won nothing with us, and we spent more money than them. As for Villa he might have spent a lot of money, but he got them into a consistent top seven side, and developed some top notch young talent who are now worth more than they paid - eg. Milner, Young etc... So sure, he never won anything with them, but you have to consider how dominate Man Utd and Chelsea have been in the domestic cup competitions over the past few years. Granted POmpey and Spurs have won competitions, but overall O'Neill did a very good job at Villa and most fans were sad to see him leave.

If O'Neill ever came here, we'd have an excellent manager. We may never win a league title (unless we get City type investment), but I could certainly see him establishing us in the top ten, if not the top six.

I believe Grayson is a good manager, however there can be no manager that is untouchable.

Three consecutive home defeats in the league is unacceptable even though we are a newly promoted side. The manner of those defeats is extremely worrying. The capitulation against Preston was unbelievable. The performance of the whole side from start to finish was poor against Leicester and the score flattered us. A schoolboy error followed by a gutless capitulation for quarter of an hour once the second goal went in destroyed what had, up til then, been a reasonably solid performance against a top side.

What those defeats have demonstrated more than anything is a lack of heart, fighting spirit. Whatever deficiencies there may be in the quality of the individual players there can be no excuse for the team not being up for the fight, particularly not a Leeds United team.

Faye is, to my eye, showing that he may be crucial to that. He is far from fit but is getting there. When able to boss the game for a full 90 minutes I think we will be a better side. We saw last night what a difference he makes to Howson's game with him making more runs than usual into the opposition box. Nuñez looks exciting. Our forward line shows promise but tend not to have the spark to pull off a goal against the run of play if the team is playing poorly.

Collins and Bruce look to be our best partnership if our fit centre backs but they haven't played together enough yet. It was that lack of understanding which meant they both expected the other to head clear for their first goal. However, as some have been saying all along to their credit, this is the one area of the team where we may not have enough quality in the personnel to turn things around. There is no way of knowing if Kisnorbo will be up to it when he returns from injury and we have to plan as if he is going to be out for the whole season. Whoever we have at the back we need a consistent unit establishing soon. I hope McCartney is able to stay. The forward line need to have confidence in the players behind them or we will continue to see players like Somma dropping too deep to be effective.

I believe stability in the management is crucial to our long term success. I believe Grayson has the qualities to take us forward but if there is no improvement in the defensive performances over the next five games Mr Bates will be facing a very difficult decision and some very angry Leeds fans.
