An interesting topic for discussion...

Post by NFCC_LUFC85 »

First of all, hi to everyone. I'm a new user who has read the forum for a long time but never got round to posting. I love Leeds but due to playing on Saturdays I am unable to get a season ticket for obvious reasons. I'm hoping to get one for next year as I'm switching to playing Sundays but liking the position we are in considering that it is our first season back in the championship. Our defence looks shakey as f**k but some of the attacking play i have seen looks very promising. Aside from the few kneejerk reactions (we've won a game convincingly and we're going up or we've lost 6-4 so we're going down) I think most leeds fans will accept that this is going to be a mid table finish this year. Possibly pushing for playoffs but more likely not. Just my opinion.

An interesting topic of conversation has come up between myself and a work colleague which I wanted to get a bit of feedback on. It came up when we were discussing the weekends boxing (David Haye Vs Fraudley Harrison followed by Pacquiao Vs Margurito). I said i wish that Mayweather would stop avoiding the fight as we need this fight to happen as the two are two of the best Pound for Pound boxers (ARGUABLY EVER) . He said that they are not in the same class as Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard etc. as the conditioning and training was not as advanced in those days and the diets etc. were s**t.

This was my response:

"I see your point but I dunno if the "conditioning" argument holds much weight. As time moves on, the technology that athletes have to use becomes better. Naturally as the money in sport increases, there is more at stake. Surely the fact that athletes are now fitter and stronger is an argument as to why the likes of Pacman and Mayweather ARE up there with the best. People are hitting harder than ever because they are stronger than ever and quicker than ever. Its the same principle with Football. "

"Who is better? Marradonna or Messi? Best or Marradonna? "

Does anyone have an opinion on this? Can anyone relate this to football with their own personal opinion? I'd be interested to see other peoples opinions on this...

I see what you mean. It's scary to see the 100m times. Where does it end? Everyone thought it would be a struggle to go much faster a while back, then it eventually gets quick and quicker before Bolt goes and completely blows the record away. Is it going to be at 6 seconds in 30 years time, or is that completely impossible?

I think the kneejerk reactions are in anger. Anger at watching a team that can play so much better yet mess it up. Just think, complete the job against PNE and Hull and that is 5 extra points. That could have had us in 3rd. Both easy situations, 4-1, and 2-1 against 10, yet we messed it up.

On the other hand, we could quite easily have played out a dull draw against Sheffield United, but we got the 3 points from that. Hit and miss.

Welcome to the forum :-D

BTW, just a bit of generic forum advice, it's helpful if your 'subject' title actually has some vague relation to the topic you want to discuss, 'An interesting topic for discussion' is a bit vague, and means that people actually have to click the thread to see if it is something they are interested in. This is fine if you (like me) spend half your life on a computer doing nothing in particular, but most people are busier and don't have the time or inclination to read every single thread.

Also, this being a Leeds United forum, (and despite the fact this is labelled 'General Forum'), if you can mark anything that isn't LUFC related 'O/T' (off topic), just stops a few people getting uppity

Its impossible to compare sports people from different generations imo, could the likes of messi and ronaldo take the crunching tackles that best and maradonna had to take? and how much more could best of done if he had the protection of the refs? I think each generation gets a handful of magic players for them to admire and you will always think the players you see live or on tv are better than the ones you only see clips of. As for boxing it is almost a different sport with the strenght and size differnce of the current guys the pac man and mayweather surely would have the same skills and boxing brains as ali etc so if i was to pick one to defend me in a fight think id pick one of the new generation

I'd be happier to compare and contrast eras if todays boxing wasn't blighted by the alphabet soup controlling the sport

but for me the best pound for pound boxers would Julio Cesar Chavez and Marvin Hagler

I have discussed this matter in the past and had a letter published in the Observer about it quite a few years ago. I think football is a sport that can be set apart, at the time I discussed the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport.

The thing is, to become a top player it takes more than just pure fitness and athleticism, although obviously these help. But at the end of the day you need an innate talent that cannot be enhanced by the use of drugs (admittedly stamina can). On the other hand it is obvious players such as Messi or Ronaldo would benefit with increased fitness through taking substances.

However, to become a top player drugs is not the answer - it is either natural talent or sheer hard work.

If it were possible for an athlete of today to compete with an athlete of yesteryear - both at their respective peaks - the athlete of today would win hands down. Especially when the competition is based on higher, faster, stronger. This is self-evident in the fact that world records continually get broken in individual events and there is no doubt that in team events the players are individually stronger and faster and hence the game itself mirrors that.

But that is a result of improving technology, science, knowledge, methodology and so on.

If robot versions of Usain Bolt and Jesse Owens were to race with their respective capabilities programed, then Bolt would win. And probably boxers of today would beat boxers from previous eras to go return to the original theme.

But what would the result be, if those stars of previous eras were born recently and had all the outside advantages that today's athletes have over them.

never a fan of Iron Mike, Nigel Ben was always worth watching and I'll probably agree on Calzaghe, although I for one am not convinced that, in Boxing at least, modern is better, talent is watered down with too many world champions, 15 rounders have been replaced with 12 rounders and the heavyweight division is fairly talentless.

I think my point to him was that he was almost staring into space, glazy eyed over the past legends of boxing without looking at things objectively.

Did anyone see the Pacman Vs Margarito fight? That guy is true class - even at the end he was respectful towards Margarito in the fact he was worried about the guys eye. Maywether now...

P.S sorry about the posting without O/T. First post and all that! :-D

Sugar Ray Robinson is generally considered the best PFP fighter of all time .

I loved watching Tommy Hearns and the great man is at the Birmingham NEC this weekend signing photos and other memorabilia . Sadly I think he needs the money because he got shafted by the IRS but has taken full responsibility for what he owes.

I also think that Wilfred Benitez was a vastly underrated champion and certainly up with his contempories as a true great (Hagler,Leonard ,Duran and Tommy). Unfortunately he is not a well man now.

Manny Pacquiao was awesome again on Sunday morning. He'll have to go down as one of the greatest of all time. He's fought everyone he could, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Márquez, Érik Morales, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Ángel Cotto, all quality fighters.

May favourite fight of all time has to be Gatti v Ward 1. Best domestic fight would be Benn v Eubank 1.

I am generally more into my Thai Boxing than boxing but if anyone wants to see two battlers fight it out then check this out.

www.p4tv.com

Go to Muay thai and scroll down to a show called "Let the battle commence" - its the first fight between a lad called Daitan Jackson from Salford (Booooo!) against Andrew Brocklebank. One of the hardest fought battles i have seen.

Does anyone think that Amir Kham will do anything to note?

I used to train at a club that had thai boxers also. The teachers used to match the differing styles to enable a better understanding of what to expect in a real situation, when used in a defensive situation. Some real good lads in their class, but you gotta watch that fu**ing knee when it's comes in. :)
