why nigel adkins??

Post by kippaxwhite »

so colin is on his way out, good riddance most say,his tactics are out dated,he`s clueless, hoofball merchant etc ect..
i agree with a lot of it,but i believed he was the man we needed to take us to the next level, not to be.

now we have the fans wanting nigel adkins,he will be the messiah, guaranteed success etc etc..
adkins did a decent job at scunthorpe got them promoted to the championship a couple of times,(and relegated)but we are talking no preasure scunthorpe united,no fan preasure demanding wins every week,no board preasure demanding promotion every year.

again did a great job at southampton, back to back promotions(had a few quid to spend in L1 & championship)again southampton bigger club than scunthorpe(obviously) but a club with limited expectations(low level prem club at best imo)
i work on the south coast a lot and quite few saints fans i speak to did`nt shed any tears when adkins was sacked, saying rumours flying around were that a lot of the players could`nt stand him, that he is very arrogant, that he started to believe the hype in the press about himself and southampton was just another stepping stone to bigger clubs.

now over the last few years we have tried the young up & coming managers grayson/mcallister/wise
and the been there done it got the t-shirt manager in warnock, still no closer to the prem.
look at the clubs these managers have bossed-blackpool/swindon/coventry/bury/oldham/plymouth/notts c/blunts/poodles etc..,are they expected to be playing prem football every season, are they classed has one of the big 6 clubs in english football, would any club outside the prem cost 52m to buy and not include the stadium/training ground and no saleable assets anymore?

yes bates has totally destroyed the club, yes there will be plenty of managers out there who would love to take it on,but at the moment the managers job is a poisoned chalice, until we find owners who are willing to show some ambition, theres not a manager in the world who can stop the rot at lufc at the moment- nigel adkins included

Because you have to temper who we can get to manage us at this time with a bit of realism. We can neither afford nor attract the very top managers.

I share your concerns about Adkins Kippax though I wouldn't object to him being appointed manager.

Managing Leeds is different to managing most other clubs. Even though we have spent so long in the lower leagues we have the history and expectations of a top premier league club. Our fans are impatient and demanding - myself included.

Adkins will be under more pressure at Leeds than he was at Southampton where a failure to get promoted to the premier league for a couple of seasons would not have put the pressure on. It will at Leeds. There was much euphoria when Grayson was appointed because he'd taken Blackpool to promotion - not so long after he was sacked because in his second season in the Championship promotion to the premier league was looking less than certain. Though personal issues may have played their part as well.

Don't get me wrong I want Warnock out as soon as possible. As far as I am concerned we have gone backwards under him. But I want him replaced by the manager who is seen as a long-term candidate and not by a caretaker manager like (for example Naylor) and then the new manager brought in in the summer. I want the new manager to start working with the players now.

But GFH have to realise that to manage Leeds and the fans' expectations and to deal with the pressure takes something special. Adkins lasted just a few months in the premiership, that is a concern.

Of course you also have to take into account who is available.
Un Marcelo Bielsa, solo hay un Marcelo Bielsa. Gracias Marcello. Marsching on together.

Adkin's cv is certainly up there amongst the best of the realistic candidates. At Scunthorpe with no money did extremely well. Also was responsible for getting Beckford firing when he took him on loan. Yes they got relegated once under him but bounced straight back which would suggest that the players were behind him.

At Southampton yes he had a bit of money to spend but so had his predecessor (Alan Pardeew) who in over 2 seasons was failing. He got them promoted straight away after taking over mid-season which points to a manager able to get more out of players than others did. To then get them promoted again would suggest a very confident and happy dressing room. Also dont forget that Southampton were doing okay in the premiership when he was sacked.

There will always be rumours of unhappy players at any club. At any one time only 11 can start and only 3 can come on as subs. As such a lot of squad players will be unhappy. There will also be players there that would have been at the cub at league 1 level and after probably being regulars for 2 seasons will now be deemed surplus to requirements.

Sometimes fans are just plain ungrateful.

i agree adkins cv stands up(but so did warnocks) and i know we have to be realistic with who we approach, but thats the problem its leeds united we are talking about, the club might give a lesser manager time to bed in,bring his own ideas etc..
grayson was given time in L1,but when things started slipping last season the fans started getting on his back demanding change.

is there another club in the country(outside the big 3-4 prem clubs)who have so much preasure put on them for success, not just from fans, but from media etc..,everybody knows a successful lufc means full stadiums every week big money coming into the club, but until people start being realistic and understand we are not the club we were 13-14yrs ago,and until we get owners who are willing to show some ambition(who knows maybe gfh might open there wallets in the summer)we will have the same disinchantment every season and the clamour for the next nigel adkins will start again.

Warnock's cv looked great until it was closey examined as the majority of his pomotions were lower league and from a long time ago. Wasn't against the appointment of NW (would have preferred SG to have been given longer) but he has shown how out of touch he is and has made many naffling decisions and upset too many players. The only thing he has done well at is his ability to find others to blame instead of himself.

Is Adkins the messiah? Who knows. His successes though are more recent and more relevant which would suggest he knows how to get teams gelling.

NW's role was meant to be to get the team promoted and then hand the reigns over to a more glamourous choice of manager for the long haul. If Adkins does what NW failed to do then it does open the door for a long haul manager at a future time (if Adkins is deemed not the man for Premiership Leeds). As a club at the present time we are shopping at Tesco and it is time to rid ourselves of the horse's ar$e. If we get to the prem then we can shop where we want.

"If i'm being honest " as Warnock would say he was chasing he's tail before a ball was kicked of , no support from Bates and things up in the air.

What I want from the next manager is what I wanted from the last.

A manager with a record of getting the most out of players,
A manager that has a history of working with smaller squads,
A manager that has a history of finding players in the lower leagues,
A manager that consistently tries to play football as plan A (but has a plan B).

If Adkins ticks those boxes I want him.
Every game I predict a 3 - 1 Leeds win, I am traditional like that.

weasal i agree with you mate, colin`s cv looked the part, but the problem is the cv does`nt include a club anywhere near the size of leeds,i honestly believed he was the man to take us to the next level(i do believe he was promised the tools for the job, which he never got).

adkins cv granted looks good, but again scunthorpe/southampton not quite lufc, and thats the problem preasure/expectations these managers have had before at other clubs,is nothing compared to lufc,we have seen it with the players we`ve brought in over the years looked good at other clubs, startled rabbits with the white shirt on, the fans complain about warnocks hoofball and getting beat, will we except pretty football and still getting beat?.
some manager will get it right at leeds and i if adkins is the next man in,i hope he is the one he just does`nt need hyping up to be the messiah, then come 3-4 months into the season if we are not 10 points clear the bitching starts again

oh the fun of being a leeds fan :-D

I think sometimes we underestimate the pressure at other clubs. Yes fair enough to say the pressure would have been low at Scunthorpe but Southampton have a decent recent history,a big ground and fanbase. They, like Leeds, were the big fish at the time in League 1 and Adkins was able to get the side used to playing football week in, week out against teams playing their 'cup final.'

NW was given more backing than SG got and has brought in a lot of players. His purchases have been poor and he has wasted money in the wrong areas. Has the money spent on Kenny been justified, likewise Peltier and Pearce. That's £2m spent there. Was signing Morrison a good move? The jury is out on that one but could we have done better by selling Becchio and using the money elsewhere? Even if we only got £2m for Becchio then that is enough to buy a decent striker. Hopefully Morrison will be a good signing. You then throw in the money spent on Hall and Tonge, to then not play them and for me NW runs out of excuses. He has brought in a lot of midfielders yet still picks Brown every game - Brown being the only player that he hasn't bought that escapes criticism. Likewise bought Peltier late in the summer when surely he'd seen enough of Byram. Bought Pearce and now doesn't play him. Bought Tonge and doesn't play him. It is just money wasted time and time again.

NW was in a great position in the summer with a lot of the previous deadweight at the end of their contracts and wages being freed up. However the new manager now has an awful lot of deadweight that NW has brought in.

i dont envy the new manager when he comes in because of the deadwood he will have to clear out,i also believe warnock was given a half decent budget in the summer to recruit, but most of his signings imo were brought in as squad players not regular first 11 and he never got the money for the icing on the cake signings.

the likes of green/norris/varney/kenny/pearce i thought were good signings, peltier was a strange one and austin i`d never heard of him(and still wish i did`nt),on paper the squad we have should be doing better,so why are`nt they?,poor managment/tactics-probably,or maybe just not good enough-definately,if only football was played on paper, not grass

i believe it will be a good few years before we will get anywhere near the prem, with these new regulations coming in and the new parachute payments the relegated prem teams receive ,it will take a small miracle to compete with them, they will retain there best players be able out bid every other club for the best players available,so the same teams will just yoyo between prem and championship.
will the fans at leeds have the patience with a new manager building for the future?
how many more thousands will walk away while the club rebuilds?
this was the season to have a right go at promotion, because its going to get harder from now on,other clubs knew it and are having ago.
if it`s nigel adkins he will have my sympathy(and full support)just hope he has thick skin
so for me its back to the 1980`s(its not 50p into the boyspen anymore though)starting the season dreaming about promotion, but deep down knowing we have little chance of it happening for a while.

I agree

I guess the appropriate answer is either 'Why not Adkins' or 'Anyone but Colin...'

I to think Warnock needs to go but i have to think no matter who comes will have one hell of task as long GFH remain in charge they appear not to have a lot of money plus i dont think they have the club at heart.Warnock i believe has been shafted by Bates and GFH and no matter who was manager had no chance of sucess.
