The sign of a bad squad

Post by eirewhite »

Despite all of colins rants about the iceing on the cake I believe big mac has inherited the worst squad in years. It struck home with me when I was (like everyone else) refreshing newsnow for the 43rd time at 11am this morning in the hope of some exciting transfer news.
I realised that I have spent the last month dreaming about who we might sign and not worrying about who was going to sign our players!!
Could it be that ghf have financially stabalised us and we are no longer a selling club?
Nope im not buying that! I cant help but feel its that we have no stars left to sell!
(ok we have mcormack, and acadamy kids lees and byram) but ...
who was worrying about the likes of mcormack or lees when we were freting over snodgrass, howson, johnson, gradel, beckford etc?
The more I think about it the more I think this is officialy the worst squad leeds have had during our spell in the lower leagues.

Thoughts? ...

As asked in the transfer thread, how much do you actually expect to happen before the transfer window opens?

Colin's back 5 is the best we have had for some time.

Morison/Ross/tall bloke should be fine.

Issue is midfield. Right across the pitch they are ordinary/similar/slow.

The window hasn't opened. There will be more recruits, bought or loans. Confident we will be better this year than last. Colin was right when he said a couple of quality signings make all the difference. That plus a quality manager of course. Patience required for now. We spend/we don't spend. Life rolls on.

Lads im not being one of the pesimists here. And im not making any reference to how much we have, have not or may not spend. I was making the point that we do not have many valuable players left to sell, where as in years gone by we had at least a handfull of players worth a few quid.
And I do agree about the back five, something larry could never master

There you go then - Lees and Byram must be worth a bob or two?

Maybe its naustalgia then. Just feels different this summer. Not too worried about anyone leaving.

Not players leaving that is worrying me. It is the worry that McD won't be able to get in the players he wants, owing to lack of funds.

Most didn't rate BJ.
Howson was apparently invisible.
Becchio was overweight and on the floor.
Snoddy was over rated allegedly.
Beckford was selfish.

You will find fans glad to see the back of all of them. Not me, only Kilkenney's sale was welcome although he needed replacing in some way.

Life goes on. Kenny/Lees/Byram/Ross/Pelts would fetch money. Big difference, only Byram would move to the Prem so you have a point. That said I don't lose sleep. The team of stars was stuck just outside the play offs. A team of well blended lesser talents can still get out of this league. Top 6 definitely within our grasp.

Spot on mate. We have the work horses, a solid enough back 5 and the guts of a decent strike force, a bit of pace and creativity in the midfield, along with blooding some of the youths in along side the experienced heads and we could be laughing. Personaly id like to see brian mc dip into league 1 for a few gems and spend 3-4m on 2 or 3 quality players. I think thats not unrealistic as colin spent about 2 and a half last year over all I think

I'd hate to think we have to wait as long, from when Huddersfield formed our club in 1919 until Sir Don took over, to be a successful club again. But with bates still calling the shots, we will probably have to....

Sort out a midfield and we are good to go.

Byram to play on the right wing and push Peltier to RB. Sort the other midfield positions out and we will have a decent go imo.

Howson, Johnson, Gradel and Snodgrass was the basis of a quality midfield. We needed someone who could come in and put their foot on the ball though, always thought it was odd we never signed Doyle. Not saying he was the answer but we never really replaced him.

Agres though, we have players who can score and the defence is looking better than it has for a while. We have nothing special in midfield though and that's where the money needs to be spent.

Max was brilliant, knee jerkers wanted him out after Bristol even though he, more than anyone, was responsible for getting us to the point where Bristol mattered. Bet there were a few of them on here at the time :-D Let's hope BM can find someone similar.

I thought liam miller was a class act in the middle of the park. He filled that foot on the ball role.
He was just breaking into the ireland team at that time too.
Can anyone remember why we didnt sign him up?

Like many others the lure of Australia was just too strong

I don't remember him being as good as you suggest although he has done well in Australia I believe.

Midfield requires vital surgery.

Still think we need an out & out goalscorer....a major concern for me from day one of last season even though we still had Becchio.

How many times did we score more than two goals in a game & who was our highest scorer/goals after Becchio last season, needs to be addressed !

Well to be fair with becchio there and if ross didnt get injured I think there was goals in the team. Granted there was no supply but it was the mentality and the way warnock had us set up as much as anything else.
Correct me if im wrong but I dont remember qpr scoring bag loads under colin??

My local team has signed him for the coming season.

I'm still not sure if I should be excited.

Not sure what the standard is like out there, but that lad can certainly pass a ball and he has an eye for goal. Good long range shooting ability
