We've not signed a provened championship goalscorer since our promotion from L1 hence the reason we have been a mid-table team for the last three years

But, we had Becchio, good enough for the Prem and signed Ross who is now subject to a 1.3 million bid. How many million pound strikers can a championship club afford on its books? Look at foxes, many on here and elsewhere admired their so called ambition. Where's it got 'em. Into a bit of a hole i believe where only 22k turned up and 3k of them were from the wolds.

Sharp is on huge wages I believe so he is likely a non starter but I agree, our goalscorer (a massive 1 in 4 strike rate) is playing in midfield which really does suggest we need a goalscorer. Would bite on Boros bait if we can see our way to replacing with a genuine goal machine or a Maxy type who can turn matches single handedly. Unfortunately 1.3 million probably requires topping up a tad.

Spending money unwisely leaves a difficult situation to deal with. Blackwell had Healey, Cresswell, Little fella from Burnley, Hulse, fat lot of good that skip load of investment did us.

BM will likely proceed with caution although the decision on Morison still confuses.

Actually I agree with you we are not in a position to spend big on a provened match-winner unless we sell our No.44 which would no doubt cause uproar at ER should McDermott go down that road.....the stayaways may even protest again at the prospect of.their loss  Btw Becchio is not a premiership striker, shame he is sat on his backside when he could be playing every week at his level in the championship......Money, money, money :sing:

I don't get the appeal of Sharp, and we always seemed linked (either genuinely or fan-fantasy) to him. Only ten goals in 39 appearances last season. If he was all-class striker that is the hype, why has he bounced around six Championship-level or lower teams in his career? Color me unconvinced on the Billy Sharpe bandwagon, and think we could do better than him. :|

Celtic are - supposedly - in the market for Sharp. If that is the case, then, probably a no-brainer for him.

Wouldn't the crowd for the season opener suggest that there are not too many of those?

We've already signed two forwards, Sharp would be a waste of limited resources.

Agreed! We have Smith/Hunt/Varney/Ross/Poleon, what we're crying out for is a supply line. So either a winger/wingers or a creative midfielder. Murphy can maybe fill the latter role but, by all accounts, he's still finding his feet which is understandable given he's stepped up a level. I'm guessing the Mackay-Stevens rumour was simply that

I'd dispute that, Smith is a true target man, Varney, Poleon and Hunt are jack of all trades forward players often out on the wing and Ross is probably the only player capable of playing the striker role...and he's not. I think we're missing the 25 goal striker...I think it may cost us in the long run.

Fair enough, but wouldn't you agree that the likes of Varney, Poleon and Hunt drift to the wings because we have no natural width and are looking to create some? Ross isn't prolific enough but is skillful and creative and I do think Smith will score plenty if he gets the service. Becchio, our last 20+ striker, thrived on service in and aound the box; he was never going to outrun a defence from his own half or beat 3 men and score. Those sort of players are few and far between and cost a premium we seemingly can't afford.

So, on the basis that we haven't a lot of dosh, a maker and a stopper are more urgent than a striker, imo. If someone finds us 4-6 mil and we can buy all three, then happy days!! Just doesn't seem likely

It,s obviously a goalscorer we require and not a striker as such .
The frontline is a bit of a muchness at best and now we dont have a 20 goal a season man is going cost big time.
Financially aswell .

Despite all the negatives people threw up, I still think a punt on the man who (mainly) saved Huddersfield from relegation (8 goals in 14 I think) last season would have been a worthy gamble. A man who may be injured more now but, when he appears, he always looks like he'll score. He can still create, absorb the attention of more than one opposition player and, the most precious commodity of all - score. He may only be 'the man' part time now, but he's still worth it. It may have been a short term move for a specific 'goal', bit like Vinnie in the day.

I had previously accepted that 'you can't go back' but, what the hell have we got that's as good, never mind better.
Too late now though. Here's hoping we get lucky with someone else.

I agree with Gino by the way - that lad Boyce looks the real deal. Whether he would make the transition or not it would be worth a gamble for such a precocious talent.
