Rumour is the big money behind this is from Andrew Flowers, owner of Enterprise Insurance.

It's funny in a way, because when the Red Bull rumours where in force, any slight mention of the stadium being bought back was clouded by voices of concern over the naming rights to the arena.

Now I'm not sure of Flower's agenda in all this, and what role Enterprise Insurance plays, if any, but surely we are equally to open to being "the Enterprise Arena" or maybe we'll go down the agricultural route of "Haigh and Flowers arena"

If ER was to change name to Enterprise Arena it wouldn't be the end of the world tbh, would still be ER to the fans. Though if red bull had done to us what they've done to other clubs it would be problematic.

Changing the name of Elland Road would be awful. Doesn't matter how you think of it, officially it would no longer be Elland Road. You might as well pretend that footballers aren't overpaid cheats and Sky doesn't control the game, and that all games are played at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. Ignoring reality doesn't change the facts.

IMO wouldn't be that awful. If that is what it takes for a potential money guy to invest big sums of money in our club then thats fine.

That's the thing though, I genuinely don't think we need a guy to invest big sums of money. We've a good solid team. Two or three quality improvements in January and I'd say we'd cement a playoff position and chase automatics.

Everton and Arsenal are the examples to follow where they have worked hard to build a style and a solid team. In Arsenal's case one world class player made a huge improvement. In Everton's case, they were able to use the loan market to bring in three quality players.


Two to three seasons ago when things were looking terrible, we couldn't afford s**t and our best players were leaving, I'd have welcomed it being called "Dolly Parton's hooters arena" if it meant getting rid of Bates and getting some money in. Thankfully, we don't need to do that anymore. Someone to invest £5m in the playing squad would be an added bonus butI honestly don't think we are desperate enough for it to sell the stadium rights.

Actually, thats a good point. It would be better if the guy investing were putting money into the playing squad. Lets leave the ground to a later date. Having said that, it might be more cost effective paying Bates off for the ground instead of renting it from him.

Sorry if my point didn't come across right. I'd still like this new consortium to make buying back Elland Road a priority (it would indeed by more cost effective in the long run). The point I was trying to make was that we don't need to offer the rename the stadium in order to get a big investor on board; for example "the Red Bull arena". In the past when we were badly in need of finance to keep the team going, I would have been for a big company buying the stadium and renaming it if it meant getting rid of Bates and getting a bit of cash. But we are in a completely different position now.

Renaming existing stadia simply doesn't work. If ER stadium was renamed the fans would still call it Elland Road as it is what we all know it as - same as how Newcastle is still known as St James's Park despite Mike Ashley changing it a few years back to the Sports Direct. A change of name only works if it is a new stadium, such as Arsenal playing at The Emirates, or Bolton at The Reebok, Stoke at The Brittania, Coventry at The Ricoh etc.

Even relatively new stadia that then get rebranded a few years later doesn't work - Man City fans call their stadium Eastlands not The Etihad. As such is someone was prepared to pay money to rename the stadium then we should take the money.
