Andy Lonergan

Todays player is, Andy Lonergan.

Its unfortunate for him he had his worst performance just before this, likely this would have been full of praise.

But, he had an absolute shocker, as bad a goalkeeping performance as you will see, and sadly that isnt a surprise.

So, where do people stand on Lonners?

A dependable goalkeeper who will always do a job.

Or, a poor goalkeeper who was never much good.

Personally, im a bit of both on Lonners.

He is a goalkeeper who can be relied upon to give you 10-15 solid games a season, but dont expect much more.

Theres a reason he averages 22 appearances a season throughout his career, theres a reason for the past 7 years he has only really been first choice through injuries, and theres a reason Wolves let him go this summer.

Theres also a reason he has never played above this league, he isnt very good, he is ok, for a spell, but he isnt a dependable first choice.

In fairness to him he was never signed to be first choice, and the fact he has been is a sad example of our questionable recruitment this summer.

I don’t think Lonergan is at any point a first choice keeper and he is only a short term solution to a GK problem.

Lonergan is what I’d call an old school keeper does the basics ok kick long, catch & shot stop. He probably happy to play second fiddle at a club like Leeds but would want to play first team in lower league teams.

In terms of current form I do think a lot has come from goal keeper and back four. Lonergan isn’t a very good distributor of the ball from feet or hands and this I think is our current problem. We can’t play from the back with him and so the ball is played long time after time and in turn we lose a lot of first and second balls!

If we persist with Lonergan our current run will continue. We need to revert back to start of season style of football and persist with a goal keeper who can play that way and for me Lonergan isn’t that goal keeper.

He made one blunder and should maybe have done better with the cross shot (always difficult to deal with and we've seen Felix screw those up multiple times) A good reserve keeper who got forced into long term starter due to the fact Felix has no clue how to deal with a moving ball and lacks bravery.

We need a better keeper full stop.
