Re: 2019 Women's World Cup - England v USA this evening
Quality was about the standard of what I watched in Western Australia about 30 years ago, retaining possession seemed to be difficult and unimportant a lot of the time, Quality of keeping isn't good still. They look like outfielders playing in goal a lot of the time. Some nice touch football and movement but not enough for me to want to watch more...

That's what I took just watching the one game, if that was a poor example of women's football, a bad game then apologies

The 'keeping is still below the standard of the outfield I think, but the skill has improved massively.faaip wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2019 11:38 am Quality was about the standard of what I watched in Western Australia about 30 years ago, retaining possession seemed to be difficult and unimportant a lot of the time, Quality of keeping isn't good still. England were off their game (due to great pressing from the USA) - they've been excellent. The crossing was better than we saw from out wingers last season!
Gutted and I think the offside rule needs changing now we have VAR. Advantage to the attacker if their bodies are in line, none of this offside by a toe nonsense, because ultimately what advantage has been gained? The decision which went against Cameroon in our match was ludicrous - their player was running away from goal and her trailing leg was offside... she actually had to do more than the defenders to score from that position!

I don't think I'll be watching another game anytime soon. Crossing looked ok but maybe because the defensive positioning was very poor. At least in that game and from both sides. Very open sport reminds me more of hockey than football. Really surprised there are not a lot more goals in these games.Genghers wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2019 1:45 pm The 'keeping is still below the standard of the outfield I think, but the skill has improved massively.

Re: 2019 Women's World Cup - England v USA this evening
The main difference between the men's and women's world cup is that with the men's there is usually 5 or 6 countries in with a realistic chance of winning it.
At the moment the USA are fitter and better technically than every one else and it will be a huge shock if they don't retain the trophy.
It's up to everyone else to reach that standard.
England had a real go and with a bit of luck could have taken them to extra time but it wasn't the greatest performance mainly because the USA just wouldn't let them settle on the ball, they were in their faces all the time.
England do have the best full back in the world in Lucy Bronze though.

Disappointed by the number of commenters here saying they wouldn't watch the women's game because of the perceived low level of play.
We all watch Leeds unfailingly even though our boys don't play to the level of Liverpool or Real Madrid, don't we?
The quality of play among the women has risen dramatically over the last twenty years and continues to improve all the time, but the biggest reason to get behind the women is because they're our teams. I'm very proud of our women from the USA; they represent our country extremely well. Not only because they're the best team in the world, but because they play with heart, determination and without the histrionics, diving, and complaining that we see all the time in the mens' game.
The English team played with the same sort of tenacity and desire as the Americans, and they are getting better fast. I will continue to support the women, not because Tobin Heath will ever make me forget Lionel Messi, but because the games are fun to watch and because they're my team.

You're a purist, you like the game for the game. I'm a partisan supporter, not Leeds not interested. Cricket was my true sport, say was because that is getting butchered by the ECCB and my own county Hampshire is treating the proper form as a glorified net while they chase short form trophies.John in Louisiana wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 3:14 pm Disappointed by the number of commenters here saying they wouldn't watch the women's game because of the perceived low level of play.

American Football, or football to you, is probably my #1 sport now and there I can appreciate the game for the games sake..plus the fantasy angle which is so polished now draws you in further. Proper fantasy mind not this 10 or 12 team redraft nonsense

USA v Netherlands
Enjoying this final, the Netherlands matching the Americans physically. The fans letting the USA know when they deploy antics we see in the men's game
Van Veenendaal the Dutch keeper has been outstanding the best I've seen in this tournament, could have been three or four nil. The girls in orange got stronger as the first-half progressed, still in it at 0-0

Re: 2019 Women's World Cup
USA far too strong as they tore the Dutch apart in the 2nd half, a penalty via VAR & a cracking 2nd goal from Lavelle wins the World Cup Final for the Americans, 2-0 flattered the Netherlands in the end courtesy of their keeper who was quite outstanding throughout the whole game

Re: 2019 Women's World Cup
Enjoyed the tournament immensely, especially after they got into the knockout rounds and the wheat was separated from the chaff.
Was initially disappointed that the Germans got upset in the group stages, but the more I saw of the Dutch team, the more I was convinced the better team won through to the final.
Quality of play on the womens' side has improved dramatically in the last few years, a trend I hope will continue. European play, in particular, is much better overall. Bronze did her name one better and won the silver ball, a justly deserved honor.
Proud of the way our women represented our country; they were clearly the class of the field.
