Re: Sheffield Utd v Leeds Utd - MATCH THREAD - Hernandez still out, Roberts in for Rodrigo

Post by Boo Radley »

This was a great win on many fronts, away from home, derby game, up against a very physical team and a game that they were convinced they would win - hence the bitterness from Wilder after the game.

Meslier came of age today - he was majestic. Both CB’s looked comfortable, particularly glad for Koch. Philips was excellent, especially when he had picked up such an early yellow card. I did worry for him. Ayling did fine but forgot he was part of a back three when ranging forward in the first half. They targeted his wing when he pushed up too high. That was sorted at halftime. Costa did fine. He covers a hell of a lot of ground. We just need him to be sharper going forward - improving though.
Roberts is a problem. He was at sea for much of the first half. He’s hesitant and it of sync with those around him. I could see him going out on loan, all the more so if we get a quality 10 in. Rodrigo really was a major step up after an initial bit of flapping. He’s going to be a serious addition. His winning challenge in front of the box was key to setting up the ball for Harrison’s cross for the goal. He’s stronger than you’d imagine for his size.
Bamford is on fire. His overall play, his work rate and obviously his scoring streak makes him stand out at the moment. Haven’t always been a fan but he’s playing out of his skin and fully deserves the credit he’s getting now.

This win will be well noted throughout the league. We are one of the form teams and we should fear no one.

All good managers though, except for Fat Frank, obviously. :)
After to agree Davy, I'd put Bruce in there with them too, he just hates losing to us.

Blunts Forum is great reading.

Apparently an over physical Leeds fouled Berge THREE times to win back possession to set up the goal. And they should have had a pen and us down to 10 men.

Those BIASED refs have an AGENDA against the Blunts now as well.

Love it.

What red card and what penalty? We should've got one for Basham's handball.

Remember when he was at Hull and they beat us at ER, him saying something on the lines of, that victory is up there with anything in my career, I just love winning at Leeds. He also once said, Leeds are a horrible horrible club :)

I'll be fair to Sheff U. Thought they were a good team today. I can see why they did well last year. They were very dangerous going forward. That first Meslier save looked like a dead cert goal. Overall, I thought their chances were better and Meslier's two first half saves were better than anything Ramsdale pulled off.

BUT .... The possession, chances, shots on target don't lie. You didn't include fouls which were hugely in our favor (something like 20-8)

Think Wilder must have been watching a different game. It was a fairly close game but we were the better team and the stats confirm it.

Blunts don't score enough goals. They got away with it last year, but you can't expect to score so few goals and be fine every year. They've not improved their attacking threat either.

Never liked Bruce since he spouted that derogatory comment about Leeds

I thought both teams played fairly well and either could have won really but we just edged it in class and Bamford, of all people, nodded his header just in the right direction to make the difference. ESPN gave us 64% possession, which seems a fair reflection - typical tight derby game to shut Wilder's cake-hole, except it won't - you can't stop perpetual motion.

Individual incidents don't concern me because we not only won but won fairly.

Have to admit, I was a little concerned about our goalkeeper situation last week but have to say Meslier pulled it out of the hat today, perhaps a few more ups and downs along the way but he's certainly looking like he can be our number 1 for years to come.

The BT commentary team couldn't believe Melsier was 21yo, one of them said he looks like a 14yo boy :mfpa:
