RIP Peter Lorimer

Besides the cup final, I remember well 2 Lorimer shots.
One was against Stoke. He received a bouncing pass on the edge of the center circle and hit it first time. It rocketed in off the underside of the bar before Shilton even put his hands up.
Another time against Liverpool he shot from outside the area and Tony Hately (I believe) decided to head the shot. Needless to say he went down like a felled tree. If I remember correctly, the referee didn't give the ball back to Liverpool though.

It is with great sadness, LUFC has learned of the passing of club legend Peter Lorimer this morning at the age of 74 following a long-term illness.

So sad about this - one of my favourite players from the great Revie team. His shooting ability was legendary.

I saw him play many times when Eddie Gray brought him back to add some experience to his young side and to help mentor the youngsters coming through. He was in his in his mid 30s by then, and Eddie played him in midfield, but he often pulled the strings in matches, and was often MOTM. He had lost the venom in his shooting by then, however if he took a free kick the crowd would still chant ' 90 miles an hour ' before he took it.

I'm 57. When I was a kid playing on the field with my brothers and friends, when I used to score I shouted " Lorimer. " Doesn't mean much to anybody but when I read of his passing, it brought many happy childhood memories for me.

Thanks for your comments Spotty. It is indeed a sad day for those of us who remember Peter playing in that wonderful side of the late 60s - early 70s. He was such a talent, such a direct player who had so much confidence in his own ability, he got a shot away every time he was within goal distance. I reflect on that as today, (and probably then), you see some forwards almost in two minds as to when is the right time to strike. He will be greatly missed. It seems cruelly early that so many of that Leeds side have now died. RIP Hotshot.

The BBC keeps trailing a programme about big Jack and his last year or so of life. A must watch whenever it's due to be aired.
