Lorry Driver shortage
I just don't get it. Travelling up and then coming back from Wakey yesterday via A1 and A14 it was nose to tail Lorries. If anything, it's been busier with lorries the last two times we've travelled up.

Re: Lorry Driver shortage
Still a hard sell though. These drivers have always been underpaid if you ask me for the hours they work. Apparently it costs you 2k just to complete the training these days. I've always thought about giving it a go but I sometimes struggle with a 7.5 tonne box van nevermind a HGV.mentalcase wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 5:17 pm Any excuse, brexit, covid blah blah blah, lorry load of bollocks.

My brother in law is an HGV driver, he did tramping for years, the hours are long, the conditions are pretty crap you spend your life sat on motorways and A roads, you sleep in the wagon some are crap then there’s the terrible ones, the food is from services and/or road side cafes so they for the most part have poor diets and they have poor sleep. He had a massive stroke when parked up in Coventry luckily for him another driver spotted him and called an ambulance saved his life.
After the stroke and the rehab (8months) he’s not the same guy and he doesn’t trust himself driving a big rig so doesn’t drive anything over 7.5 ton and only in and around the north now adays.
They couldn’t pay me enough to do that job

Re: Lorry Driver shortage
I've been tramping for 40 years.
This shortage of drivers isn't a recent thing !
There's been a massive shortage of drivers for 15/20 years..the reason :- s**t wages..
The job usually entails 70 to 72 hours a week. Away from home for 4 to 5 nights a week. Massive lack of truckstops and basic facilities. That's why lay-bys and industrial estates are full of trucks on a night. Thieves slashing curtains virtually every night, then there's the diesel thieves too.. the job is crap..
So why do we do it ? It's in our blood.
There's still a great commeradary between truck drivers.
I know wages are going up because of the shortage, but it's too little too late.

I thought that they had introduced new tests, etc and there is the medical cost too...
Plus.. I would have to apply for my digital tacho licence again...
Re: Lorry Driver shortage
Gave up fuel tanker driving 7 years ago, sold up and moved to Bulgaria, don't regret it for one minute even though tanker driving is what you might call 'the luxurious side of truckin'.

Re: Lorry Driver shortage
Just been to Tesco's to do some food shopping for the weekend. Predictably the approach road is chocker with fuel panic buyers queuing. There is bound to be at least a short term shortage of fuel, regardless of whether there is a real lack of supply, as most of it will be in cars parked on people's driveways.

Re: Lorry Driver shortage
The only reason why there is a shortage of fuel is the dickheads who are going to get £5 worth to fill their tanks up and those going with jerry cans .It,s the media that cause,s this just like it did with loo rolls.

Just read an article in my local paper. Yes I think you are referring to idiots like these:eastyorkshirewhite wrote: ↑Fri Sep 24, 2021 2:14 pm The only reason why there is a shortage of fuel is the dickheads who are going to get £5 worth to fill their tanks up and those going with jerry cans .It,s the media that cause,s this just like it did with loo rolls.
She said: "I have bought four containers of fuel today, so I'm well stocked up. Stock up people as cars are queuing onto the roads. Tons of cars are filling cans and petrol containers. It's bad out there!"
